Soldier of Fortune

The intro before the opening credits starts with a map of the geopolitical situation around the British Crown Colony Hong Kong in 1955.

Some establishing shots follow, first with the view west along Hong Kong's Third Street, at the corner of Sai Pun Market.

At Tsim Sha Tsui district facing from the rooftop of the Peninsula Hotel towards the clock tower by the terminus station of the Kowloon-Canton Railway. The KCR British Section from Kowloon trough the New Territories to Lo Wu border station, already behind the so-called bamboo curtain, offered daily two direct passenger trains to Canton. The Marine Police Headquarters can be seen on the far right and in the distance Victoria Peak, at 552 m the highest elevation on Hong Kong Island.

The male main character waits at Barker Road station of the Peak Tram, overlooking Victoria Harbour.

Aged "King of Hollywood" Clark Gable as Hank Lee notices the Peak Tram coming from the upper station. After he gets on the tramcar, the opening titles begin to roll.

The passengers disembark the freighter anchoring at Victoria Harbour.

The "Sea Bee" sets off and takes the passengers, including Jane Hoyt in search of her missing husband, to Kowloon, where she stays at the Peninsula Hotel.

Aboard Police boat No 15 Inspector Merryweather patrols along the sampans of a floating brothel in Victoria Harbour.

The next morning in front of the Marine Police H.Q. at Kowloon Merryweather returns a salute to the group leader of the marching cadets.

The camera pans with the two men up to steps of the main entrance, where Merryweather (Michael Rennie) is informed that a certain Mrs. Hoyt is already waiting in his office.

Filmed from the upper floor of the east wing down to the courtyard, where Merryweather greets Jane Hoyt on the front steps of the Peninsula Hotel, located at Salisbury Road, Kowloon.

Jane (Susan Hayward) expresses her doubts about getting involved with Hank Lee to find her missing husband after Merryweather fails to help her. By the way, there is a distance of around 11.700 km between this shot and the one from Capture 15, because Hayward did not travel to Hong Kong due to divorce proceedings at the time. Therefore, all exterior shots involving close-ups of her had to be filmed on the 20th Century-Fox lot in West Los Angeles, California, some of which used rear projection.

The 1952 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn with Jane at the Vehicular Ferry Pier, Central district, Victoria, Hong Kong Island.

The Silver Dawn makes its way along Queen's Road, Central district.

On narrow Bowen Road, now a pedestrian street, above Wanchai district, the RR approaches the impressive villa of Hank Lee.

The Rolls-Royce leaves Stubbs Road ...

... to enter the King Yin Lei gateway.

The RR Silver Dawn reaches the grounds of the King Yin Lei mansion, located in the Mid-Levels above the Happy Valley Racecourse, ...

... and comes to a halt in front of the striking residence, built from 1936 to 1937 and standing in for the lavish villa of Hank Lee.

From King Yin Lei the stupendous view across Victoria Harbor towards Kowloon, combined with the special effects by Ray Kellogg announcing the impending typhoon.

Looking for someone to take her into Red China, Jane is conveyed in a rickshaw, originally from Japan, to Des Voeux Road Central, where the then Wing On department store is visible in the background. The characteristic double-decker trams, introduced in 1912 and called "Ding Ding", of the Hong Kong Tramways Limited also come into view. According to IMDb Jennifer Jones was the stand-in for Susan Hayward for the on-location-scenes.

Still on Des Voeux Road Central, where in the background at the corner with Wing Lok Street the then Golden Dragon restaurant comes into view, behind the Willys Jeep Station Wagon. And still with Hayward stand-in Jennifer Jones, then a top-ranked movie star, who was working at the same time in Hong Kong for "Love Is a Many-Splendoured Thing", also produced by Buddy Adler for 20th Century-Fox.

At the corner of Connaught Road West where it turns in towards Wing Lok Street and Bonham Strand West.

At the end of her fruitless search, Jane looks up at the street sign on the corner with Connaught Road. For completeness and as mentioned, actually shot in a Chinatown-like set of the Fox backlot in West Los Angeles, California, USA, ...

... where Susan Hayward as Jane asks the rickshaw driver to take her to the headquarters of Hank Lee's Import-Export Company.

Again Hayward stand-in Jennifer Jones as Jane now entering the office located at Connaught Road West.

Hank Lee's RR at the Jordan Road Vehicular Ferry Pier, Kowloon.

The camera pans with the car to the Jordan Road waterfront, until it comes to a halt to pick up Hank's sidekick Dupont Chevalier (Alex D'Arcy). Behind it the former Naval Landing ship "Charles MacLeod", built in 1945 by Lithgows Ltd, Glasgow, and broken up in 1968.

Tin Hau Temple at the Yau Ma Tei district, located on the corner of Temple Street and Public Square Street, where Hank hopes to learn more about the whereabouts of the missing American from a temple servant and asks her to ask the members of the order on the Chinese mainland to ask around.

Despite Lee's promise to help her find her husband, Jane sets off for Macao, accompanied by General Po Lin (Richard Loo), aboard the "Takshing", built in 1924 by Taikoo Dockyard, Hong Kong, and broken up in 1968.

On the way to Macau, the ferry is intercepted by an armed Chinese patrol boat, and Po Lin as former Kuomintang general is arrested. Later Jane ends up in Macau in the clutches of a sleazy Portuguese who disguises his brothel as a language school.

Aboard the "Chicago" Hank sails to Macau to rescue Jane. From there, he launches a risky commando operation to free Louis Hoyt (Gene Barry), accused for espionage, from prison in Canton. Also present, albeit unwillingly, is Merryweather, who sneaked on board the junk for an inspection shortly before departure from Hong Kong.

On the way back, there is a chase by a Chinese patrol boat, which opens fire on the "Chicago" by a Hotchkiss 6-pounder gun. Thanks to an Oerlikon 20 mm cannon installed under the deck aft, Hank is able to keep the communists at a distance until a phalanx of junks and sampans from Hong Kong appears on the horizon, whereupon the Chinese patrol boat stands down.

Again at the courtyard of the Peninsula Hotel, where the PAA Bedford bus as Pan American World Airways shuttle for Kai Tak Airport departs with the Hoyts aboard.

The camera pans with the Bedford SB until a pensive Hank Lee comes into view. Facing across Salisbury Road brings the landmarking clock tower of the KCR Terminus back into view.

The happy ending for Hank, standing at Barker Road station as in the beginning, comes in the form of the Peak Tram travelling uphill, of course with Jane aboard. The all-metal tramcar with 62 seats was introduced in 1948. The property in the background no longer exists in this form.
