Stormy Monday

Leaning on a petrol pump. Patrick (Mark Long) smokes a cigarette whilst waiting for Tony to return from the garage kiosk. Tony Leighton found the service station at Harlow Green, Gateshead in Tyne & Wear, just north of the Angel of the North on the A167 Durham Road southbound. 

The position and style of the pumps has changed due to redesign during the intervening years.

As Tony and Patrick drive towards Newcastle upon Tyne, the titles roll and the sun rises. The view eastward along the River Tyne through the Tyne Bridge that connects Newcastle upon Tyne with Gateshead in Tyne & Wear.

Unfortunately there are mountains of scaffolding around the Tyne Bridge, especially on the north bank.

Continuing their journey, Tony and Partick are held up in a traffic jam. Tony Leighton found Luke's Lane in Hebburn, Tyne & Wear with Monkton Coke Works in the background. The bridge to the right takes the road over the Tyne & Wear Metro route between Pelaw and Fellgate stations.

Tony Leighton (TL) found that housing now occupies the area.

Listening to the DJ on the radio talking about "America" Week, Brendan (Sean Bean) gets up and opens his curtains.

Two Police Officers walk along the queue of vehicles explaining what has happened up ahead. Luke's Lane Lane in Hebburn NE31 identified by Tony Leighton who adds that Monkton Coke Works closed in 1990.

The view is lost behind the greenery but the coke works have long disappeared.

After washing under his wash hand basin tap, Brendan leaves the house and walks to town in search of work. Looking south on Wincomblee Road in Wincomblee, Walker NE6. Along with other locations in Walker, this was identified the Chronicle Live page "Stormy Monday: 17 then-and-now Newcastle locations from the 1988 crime film".

Following a shower, breakfast and a phone call from Bob about a job for Mr. Cosmo, Kate (Melanie Griffith) leaves her apartment and takes a taxi into work. Montague Court on Montague Avenue in Gosforth, Tyne & Wear NE3.

Native Americans perform as the tannoy at a shopping centre announces half price deals on goods made in the USA. The Metrocentre on St. Michaels Way in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear.

The lift remains in place behind the lants and advertisement screen.

Spotting a job in a newspaper grabbed from a bin, Brendan puts on his headphones and bumps into Kate as she gets off an escalator. Town Square in the Metrocentre, Gateshead.

One escalator has become two.

Recovering from the collision, Brendan apologises before Kate walks away. Town Square at the Metrocentre on St. Michaels Way, Gateshead.

There's no clock to tell anyone how long they've been shopping.

On the move again, Tony and Patrick's red Jaguar heads north. Looking west on the A195 Western Highway where the dual carriageway joins the A1(M) at Washington, Tyne & Wear.

On the same road, the same junction.

Brendan passes a disturbance in the street during which a Man smashes a shop window. Looking along Side towards the junction with Dean Street in Newcastle upon Tyne.

With it's siren sounding, a police car takes the Miscreant away. The junction of Side, Queen Street and Sandhill with Phoenix House on the left and the Tyne Bridge in the right background. The same view features in 'Payroll'.

Brendan looks up at the building before checking the address in the newspaper advertisement for a cleaner. Outside Akenside House at number 5 Akenside Hill. Once a bank, the Grade II listed building was converted into a bar in 1993.

Speaking on the phone, Mr. Finney (Sting) looks up at his secretary Jean (Caroline Hutchison) when she tells him that there's someone asking about the job. The view from Akenside House onto Sandhill and the Guildhall.

In the lounge at Newcastle Airport, a Passenger awakes from his slumber when the Kraków Jazz Ensemble starts playing.

Jean hands over paperwork after Mr. Finney sends Brendan to the airport with documentation allowing Andrzej Slominski and the Jazz Ensemble to collect their baggage. Facing the corner of Akenside Hill and Queen Street in Newcastle upon Tyne NE1.

Having also landed at the airport, Francis Cosmo and his aide Bob are driven into the city. Newcastle Swing Bridge crossing the River Tyne from Newcastle upon Tyne to Gateshead. The bridge makes an appearance in 'Schizo', 'Get Carter' and 'Payroll'.

Tony draws our attention to the steps on the Swing Bridge which are facing in the opposite direction to the film capture explaining "The bridge rotates through 180 degrees and doesn't always end up the same way round."

With the Polish Jazz Band on board, Brendan brings the Transit to a stand behind Cosmo's stretched limousine outside the Royal Station Hotel. The Royal Station Hotel on Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

In his office, Francis Cosmo (Tommy Lee Jones) asks Councillor John Perry (Roderic Leigh) if he's sure that a vote by the Housing Committee will go their way. Through the windows of Cale Cross House can be seen the spire and clock of All Saints church on Pilgrim Place.

Tony and Patrick arrive in the city centre and turn into the street below Finney's office. The junction of Side, Akenside Hill, Queen Street and Sandhill.

Running late for work after meeting with Cosmo, Kate hurries into Weegee where she is told off by the Manager. Looking across Dean Street from number 12 with Milburn House as the background.

With his tasks for the day completed, Brendan makes his way to Weegee where he finds Kate working as a waitress. Facing southward on Dean Street with Side crossing the background and bollards at the end of Painter Heugh to the left.

Having overheard Tony and Patrick talking about killing Finney, Brendan pays Kate for his steak and goes to warn him at the US police themed Precinct, another of his employer's clubs. Facing number 9 Lombard Street at the corner of Queen Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear.

The Bouncers (Nicholas Lumley and Cy Benson) refuse access to the members only club. Looking towards Quayside from outside number 9 Lombard Street.

Across from the Precinct, Brendan notices the Hopper Bar. Facing Lombard House on Lombard Street, opposite number 9.

With nothing to do but wait, Brendan heads to Weegee. The car park beneath the Tyne Bridge at the corner of Lombard Street and Queen Street.

Brendan meets Kate when she finishes work. The pavement outside 12 Dean Street.

The two head to the Hopper Bar where Brendan keeps an eye on the Precinct, leaving when he sees Finney appear. Lombard Street, with buildings at the corner of Akenside and Queen Street in the right distance.

Too much street furniture for a good comparison.

Following a meeting with the club owner at his home, Mr. Finney leads Brendan to his car.

Kate arrives at the hotel where Cosmo introduces Councillor Perry to her. Neville Street, looking eastward towards the junction of Westgate Road and Collingwood Street with Pudding Chare obscured by the obtrusive Westgate House which was demolished in 2007.

Tony found that cars weren't quite as obtrusive when he arrived on the scene.

After lunch and speeches, Kate leaves the hotel when the Councillor makes a pass at her. The entrance to the Royal Station Hotel on Neville Street.

No red carpet for Tony, but they have added hand rails.

Following an unsuccessful attempt at threatening Mr. Finney's in his office, Tony (James Cosmo) and Patrick are put on a train by Blake and two Heavies (including Ying Tong John). Newcastle upon Tyne Central station on Neville Street.

The train to London leaves Newcastle. Looking across the Tyne from Newcastle upon Tyne towards Gateshead with the Newcastle Swing Bridge and the High Level Bridge crossing the river.

Walking through the city, Kate heads to Weegee where she finds Brendan waiting outside. Dean Street in Newcastle upon Tyne NE1.

Brendan tells her that he has to go somewhere that evening. Dean Street with Side in the distance and the plaque on the wall to the top right indicating that Milburn House was built in 1905.

After Kate is fired, Brendan helps her into the Jaguar that Finney made Tony sell for £1. Facing number 12 Dean Street.

As daylight fades, Brendan drives out of the city followed by two taxis carrying members of the Kraków Jazz Ensemble. Horatio Street with Tyne Street to the right and the Tyne Bridge in the distance. An almost identical view can be seen in 'Payroll'.

The road down to the quay has been narrowed on the left and the original line is the left hand side of what is now the footpath at a slightly lower level.

The convoy makes its way along the river. Fisher Street at the junction with Oil Mill Road and Neptune Road in Walker NE6.

Brendan pulls into a parking space outside a Polish Club. Facing the south-east on Howard Street towards Harbour View in North Shields NE30 with the corner of Tyne Street to the left and North Tyneside Registry Office on the right.

The Ensemble, Brendan and Kate are welcomed with open arms. Outside number 105 Howard Street in North Shields, Tyne & Wear.

Tony phones Cosmo from London, telling him what has happened. The Tyne Bridge with Cale Cross House in Newcastle upon Tyne to the centre top. The bridge also appears in 'The Ballad of Tam Lin', 'Get Carter', 'The Clouded Yellow', 'The Likely Lads', 'On the Night of the Fire' and 'Payroll'.

The melancholy music playing in the club upsets Kate and she wanders outside. Harbour View in North Shields with the fence around Library Stairs in the foreground.

On the way to Kate's apartment, the car is stopped by Bob (Derek Hoxby) who beats Brendan up. The B1318 Great North Road on the western edge of Brandling Park in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2, looking southward from the bus stop lay-by with the bridges carrying the northbound slip road and the A167(M) Central Motorway East.

Far better weather for Tony Leighton.

After reporting back to Cosmo when Brendan shoots at him with a gun found in the Jaguar's glovebox, Bob is sent to see Finney at his club. The corner of Side and Akenside Hill.

Cosmo meets with Finney, telling him that he knows he has a bank full of money to launder. Looking east from the High Level Bridge with the Tyne Bridge crossing the background. The scene is reminiscent of one seen during 'Get Carter' in which the view is up river.

Borrowing the Jaguar, Kate drives home from the hotel where she spent the night with Brendan. Facing south on Great North Road in NE2, towards the junction with Central Motorway East with the Civic Centre in the left distance.

Kate parks in the basement car park and climbs the stairs to where she finds her apartment empty and Cosmo waiting. Montague Court on Montague Avenue in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne NE3.

That evening, Brendan makes his way to the Metro. The escalators at St. James Metro station on Gallowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1.

Kate drives to pick up Brendan. Looking into Tyne Street from the junction with Horatio Street, City Road and Walker Road in the Battlefield area of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Tyne Street has since been closed off at this end and forms a car park for the offices that occupy the Sailor's Bethel.

The dashboard clock ticks towards 11:30pm as the Jaguar XJ-S corners. Horatio Road in NE1, looking towards the city centre.

The Baltic Flour Mills are still visible over the top of the quayside flats and offices and All Saint's Church stands just to the left of the corner wall pillar which has been shortened.

Brendan gets into the car where Kate explains that everything's going to be all right. The Tyne Bridge, facing south from the Newcastle upon Tyne side.

Kate drives on before Brendan tells her to turn the car around as Cosmo climbs the stairs at the Key Club. To the left stands the Half Moon Hotel at the corner of Half Moon Lane and High Street at the top of Bottle Bank, Gateshead, a building also seen in 'Payroll'.

Although traffic has increased in the intervening years, three lanes have become two, albeit wider.

Returning to the Key Club where he allows Andrej and his girlfriend Krysia to borrow the Jaguar, Brendan walks in on a meeting between Cosmo and Finney and realises, too late, that a bomb has been planted in the car. The burning Jaguar rolls to a stand before Brendan takes the gun out of his pocket, turns and points it at Cosmo who has followed him from the club. Facing the Newcastle Arms public house on Akenside Hill.
