Edna, the Inebriate Woman (BBC Play for Today)

Leaving the hostel where she spent the night, 60 year old Edna O'Casey (Patricia Hayes) makes her way through the countryside. Box Hill in Surrey, looking west over Dorking, identified by Jamie Sturgeon.

With much tree and scrub growth along the path over the past 55 years, Jamie took this approximation of the scene now.

A Shopkeeper lays out produce as the penniless Edna approaches. The Square in Shere. The village appears in many productions including 'A Matter of Life and Death', 'The Holiday', 'The Earth Dies Screaming', 'His Lordship Goes to Press' and 'The Ruling Class'.

John Harwood got up close and personal with buildings on The Square.

"People are getting up, the caffs are opening. You can smell the breakfasts." Looking northward along the River Wey towards Eashing Bridges at Lower Eashing in Surrey found by Steve Randall.

As close as David O'Donogue could get as the nettles in the grass were stinging through his sandals.

After taking a drink from a stream, Edna gathers her belongings and continues on her way. Steve Randall identifies the bank of the Wey in Lower Eashing with number 2 National Trust Cottages in the background.

David O'Donogue matches the view adding "When Patricia Hayes passed away, she was buried at the Watts cemetery in Compton which is just up the road. It seems fitting really as I think this play was generally regarded as a high water mark of her career, showing that she could more than handle serious subjects as well as her more usual comedy roles."

Rubbing soil off a potato, Edna eats her breakfast. Jamie Sturgeon believes this to be a field off Halfway Lane as it runs from Eashing Lane towards Halfway Farm, located midway between Eashing and Godalming, with the houses in the left distance being numbers 66 and 67 Eashing Lane.

Edna looks at a line of Down and Outs after reading the sign on the door of a night shelter . . . "No beds".

Meeting the destitute Jessie (Amelia Bayntun) at the end of the queue, Edna asks what it's like in the doss house before the pair set off wayfaring together.

As her wanderings continue following a failed claim for a grant from Social Security, Edna joins a large group of homeless People who live under a bridge.

Meeting Irene (Pat Nye) in the street, Edna is smuggled into a common lodging house. Belvedere Buildings running between Webber Street and Southwark Bridge Road in Borough SE1 found by Andrew Humphrey.

At the gates of the psychiatric hospital that she has been sent to by the court following a disturbance in a Social Security office, Edna walks away after speaking with the Porter (Keith Marsh).

The camera pans right with Edna to bring the hospital gateway into view.

Being told that she's cured by a Psychiatrist, Edna takes to the road again after leaving the hospital. Box Hill in Surrey identified by Richard Winchester.

Jamie Sturgeon returned to the location and wonders where the BBC perched their camera on such a steep bank.

Moved on by a Policeman from a barn shared with two other tramps, Edna rummages through the bins outside a transport café.

Pushed out of another hostel that she tries to get into, Edna wanders through city streets. Dave W found Edna in Francis Street, SW1 seen from Victoria Street. Now pedestrianised as Wilcox Place. (RL)

Almost getting run over, Edna crosses a busy street. As Dave says "The camera pan takes us across Francis Street bringing into view the pillars on the side elevation of Army and Navy Stores. (RL)

The camera pans left before a cut finds Edna washing her clothes in the sinks of a public toilet. With the pan continuing, Dave adds "now displaying the Victoria Street facade of Army and Navy Stores. The building was replaced by a modern design in the seventies. It closed in 2021. (RL)

Having completed her washing, Edna climbs the steps from the ladies convenience. Dave W recognises 349 Royal College Street, London NW1 in the background and finds that the 'Ladies' is now a music studio. (RL)

A Gentleman is approaches as Edna begs for money in the streets. She has made her way to Victoria Street, London SW1, here outside circa No 66 looking west. (RL)

Edna walks free from prison after serving time for being drunk and disorderly and causing a breach of the peace. Holloway Prison on Parkhurst Road N7.

A van full of Nuns and Volunteers from "Jesus Saves" brings food and drink to the Homeless. Ron Glenister finds the van entering one of the arches at Latimer Road Underground station with what was at the time 72 Bramley Road, W10 in the background. (RL)

Turning when a window opens across the road from where she bangs on the door of "Jesus Saves", Edna shouts back when the Resident threatens to call the police.

Across the street, another Neighbour leans from his window and shouting "shut up".

Edna calls up that she isn't a vagrant, "I've lived in houses, yes".

Josie Quinn (Barbara Jefford) opens the door at "Jesus Saves".

After being out, Edna hammers on the door of the refuge for Josie to let her in.

With the closure of "Jesus Saves" looming following complaints from the Neighbours, Edna returns to the streets to beg for money to save the safe haven.

Homeless again, Edna walks with Teresa (Kate Williams), another former resident of "Jesus Save". Ron Glenister places them walking south along Bramley Road, W10 and through an arch of Latimer Road Underground Station. (RL)
