Mr. Forbush and the Penguins

Tara St. John Luke (Hayley Mills) leaves work at Fanny Hill's Parlour after being chatted up by biology student Richard. Hogarth Place in Earl's Court with number 16 Hogarth Road to the top left.

Having left ahead of Tara following coffee and whiskies Richard Forbush (John Hurt) opens the door of the Invicta and offers her a lift. The junction of Hogarth Road and Hogarth Place.

The quirky corner building is more quirky now. PW

When Tara choses to walk . . . Richard gets into the car telling Ahaz to "follow that girl." Looking north-east along Hogarth Road SW5.

The shallow womaniser stares at Tara as they turn a corner. Dave W has moved on from school journey memories to those of his college journey and provides us with the car turning from Lamont Road, SW10 into Shalcombe Street. He says that some structural alterations have taken place to the corner house and its detached neighbour to the left since his day. (RL)

Managing to persuade Tara to accept a ride, Richard takes over the driving from Ahaz. Here Dave tells us is outside 4490a Kings Road but located in Langton Street. (RL)

The Traffic Warden's Colleague approaches as she completes another ticket. Dave W is 'just the ticket' too, next door to the premises of Capture 7 in Langton Street near its corner with Kings Road. (RL)

With Ahaz on the back seat, Richard attempts to woo Tara before touching her leg. Dave completes the sequence with looking east along Lamont Road towards its cul-de-sec. On the right is Limerston Street where the bus stand is still in operation. (RL)

A Police Sergeant (John Comer) watches Tara slap Richard as the Invicta approaches. Dave W identifies the location as Lamont Road near its corner with Shalcombe Street looking east, but ponders the fact that it is an unlikely spot for a genuine pedestrian crossing, and wonders if that was a 'give way' sign post working under temporary pretences. Tara takes the keys out of the ignition and the car stops on a pedestrian crossing next to the Sergeant. "Just a nudge" to the right of Capture 10 Dave says. So shall we say, Lamont Road, SW10 looking north into Shalcomb Street using that remaining post box as our center piece. (RL)

When Richard fails a breathalyser test, Professor George Dewport shares a taxi with him after paying his bail at the police station. Facing Westminster Abbey from the eastern end of Broad Sanctuary in London SW1.

Trees and traffic do their best to obscure the view. SJ

In return for the favour, Dewport tells Richard to attend a lecture by his friend Professor Tringham before being dropped off to take part in a demonstration. Looking across Parliament Square from the corner of Broad Sanctuary with the Houses of Parliament in the background.

Richard follows Tara from Fanny Hill's Parlour after telling her that Professor Dewport has recommended him for a research post in the Antarctic. Looking towards Hogarth Road from Hogarth Place in SW5 with Earl's Court Road in the distance.

Accompanying her home, Tara takes him to her flat where she parts company with him at the front door.

To impress Tara, Richard accepts the six month post observing a penguin rookery and is set down at Cape Royds. Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula.

After several weeks the penguins arrive, marching across the wilderness.

Returning to Shackleton's Hut, Richard shelters from a blizzard. Wikipedia tells us that, according to Connecticut broadsheet the Hartford Courant, 'Mr. Forbush and the Penguins' was the first feature film to be shot in Antarctica.
