Sharp eyed Denis Hoare found that there are now only two white rings on that tree and was left to ponder on the fact that trees gained rings as they grew older, because there were three at the time of filming. (RL)

At a junction, the Silver Wraith corners before Gordon and Alexander catch up in time to see the burning wreck of the car a little way along the road. "It had ended so tragically and yet, it had all been planned down to the minutest detail." The Battle Axes at the corner of Aldenham Road and Butterfly Lane between Elstree and Aldenham. Poor quality footage, later to become a back projection, helps to illustrate the meeting between John John Alexander and Helen Brown in flashback. "I met Helen Brown while on a brief holiday and fell madly in love with her. We got married and we were both happy."

Getting out of the car, the industrialist enters the house to find Helen taking a bath with Liz, her actress lover. The garage at Kenstead Hall.

Setting off for a vacation, Helen Alexander (Margaret Lee) leaves the house and gets into her Jaguar. Kenstead Hall, a mock Tudor mansion in Hampstead N2.

Some weeks after Helen's death when the sabotaged E-Type crashes, John returns to work at the import and export company she owned with her father.

The camera pans right as Inspector Gordon of Scotland Yard reads that John had been seen in St. Tropez following his wife's death.

After Inspector Stevens and Inspector Gordon pay a visit to John at the office, he spends the evening driving around London. Facing the Empire and Jacey cinemas on Leicester Square W1.

The Jacey's canopy has altered and the building, Queen's House, is now Horizon's casino and a Premier Inn. SJ

Agitated and unable to concentrate, John continues through the West End in his Mk II Jaguar. Leicester Square with the Odeon to the right.

Lightning flashes as John Alexander (Klaus Kinski) enters the house where he finds an intruder named Christine in the shower. Kenstead Hall, 52 The Bishops Avenue in N2.

John drives Christine from the house and drops her near where a Hippy party is in full swing. Filmed partly at Cinecittà in Rome, this could be at or near the studios in Italy rather than the UK.

After watching a recently shot adult film playing at the party, John is directed to the maker's studio. Looking north-east along Shaftesbury Avenue W1 with the red Dunlop advertisement appearing at the corner of Great Windmill Street.

The Jaguar passes through the West End, heading towards the port. Facing westward from the junction of Piccadilly, Great Windmill Street, Coventry Street and Haymarket in W1 with Swan & Edgar on Piccadilly Circus in the left distance and the canopy of the London Coliseum to the top right.

Reaching his destination, John enters Peter Nader's studio where he is beaten up.

As John wakes up at home with Christine looking after him, on the road outside a Ford Zodiac's lights flash. The Bishops Avenue in Hampstead N2 with Hammerson House visible in the left background.

Finding himself alone in the house later that night, John heads to near where Christine has gone and parks up in a narrow street.

Leaving his car, John turns a corner, followed by a limping Man.

Aware that he's being followed, John pauses to light a cigarette.

With his stick sounding each step on the cobbles, the limping Man walks past John and enters a pub.

From inside the pub, the Man watches John enter the Park Hotel across the road before turning to another Figure in the shadows.

After obtaining a copy of the adult film in which it seems his Wife appears, John visits the theatre where Liz is performing. Patrons leave the Globe Theatre at the corner of Rupert Street and Shaftesbury Avenue W1 in the Italian version.

Cast Members are seen leaving a theatre by the stage door in the German version of the film. Manuel Gurtner spotted that this is reused footage from the German Edgar Wallace adaptation 'The Man with the Glass Eye' by Alfred Vohrer, which was made in the same year and also starred Christiane Krüger. Filming took place in West Berlin at the then new Hotel Palace, located at Budapester Straße.

Learning that Liz had received a phone call from Helen explaining that her friend Judith had perished in the crash and she had survived, John leaves the theatre. Piccadilly Circus with the Air India offices beneath the Guinness Clock to the right.

Following clues given by Mr. Brown's secretary Alice, John drives to the "old family house". Recognising the house from 'Strangler's Web' and '101 Dalmatians', Antony Blair identifies this as Sarum Chase at 23 West Heath Road on the corner of Platt's Lane in NW3. Denis Hoare identifies similarly.

Having searched the deserted house, John follows Helen's dog as it runs through the front door. Dating from 1932, this is Sarum Chase on West Heath Road located by Antony Blair. Denis Hoare identifies similarly.

Across the driveway, Helen's monogrammed glove reaches out of a waiting Ford Zodiac to retrieve the dog. Antony Blair found Sarum Chase on West Heath Road, Hampstead. Denis Hoare identifies similarly.

Confused, John returns to the West End, visiting Snows for a drink. Previously the Royal Standard public house, Snows was at 226-227 Piccadilly.

More bars and clubs, more drinks. The Astor Club on Lansdowne Road in Mayfair W1 survived for 40 years until the late 1970s.

Receiving a call from Liz at one of the bars, John gets into his car and follows her instructions. Facing south on Charing Cross Road W1 with the entrance of Leicester Square station at the corner of Little Newport Street to the top right.

In contrast to the left entrance, the underground entrance beyond the KFC on the right is very low key almost buried by the Hippodrome Casino. SJ

John arrives at St. Anne's Cathedral where, inside, he come face to face with . . . A tampered view of Salisbury Cathedral in Wiltshire.

The final scene returns to where the film started with the white Rolls Royce speeding towards a level crossing which a train is approaching. Not a British train, the locomotive appears to be an electric Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane E.626, some of which survived in service until the 1990s.
