La ragazza con la pistola (The Girl with the Pistol)

Once upon a time in a small town on the Sicilian coast. But actually shot at Polignano a Mare, south of Bari, Puglia region, as we see the Largo Grotta Ardito. Identified by Manuel Gurtner and confirmed by Antonia Martinelli.

There, where the young men dance among themselves and with each other on a rooftop terrace to pop music from a transistor radio. Polignano a Mare, looking along Via Tritone towards the town's centre, with the campanile of the Chiesa della Natività in the distance.

Vincenzo Macaluso meets up with two sidekicks. The fountain onto the Largo Grotta Ardito is still there.

Together with her mother and her cousin Concetta, Assunta Patanè is just leaving their home, located at 125, Via Tritone, just by the corner with Via Girasole.

Vincenzo's sidekicks are waiting at the corner of the junction Via Viola and Via Tritone, facing towards the intersection with Via Sirene, which the three women are walking along.

Now coming from Via Tritone the three women are turning into Via Garofalo.

The three women leave the fictitious farmacia, located at 32, Via Garofalo, while the Fiat 508 Balilla from Capture 3 slowly comes into view, with the Adriatic Sea visible in the background.

Walking alongside the Lungomare, the three women reach the corner of Via Viola and Largo Grotta Ardito. In the distance the campanile of the Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria Assunta can be recognised.

Pursued by Vincenzo's henchman, Assunta runs along Via Girasole ...

... but is overtaken and forced into the rickety Fiat at the corner with Via Tritone.

Assunta is taken to a remote fattoria (farm) somewhere in the hinterland. According to an interview with director Monicelli, filming took place in the Tavoliere plain, supposedly near Santeramo in Colle, Bari.

The henchmen drag Assunta out of the car and into an outbuilding where Macaluso is already waiting. However, not for Assunta, but for buxom Concetta.

The next day, Assunta wakes up alone and learns that Vincenzo has disappeared, with the suitcase in his hand.

Assunta returns into town as disgraced woman. Her fiancé Salvatore, standing behind the Panatè women, demands that her family has to clear the offence. The problem: there are no men in the Panatè family. Shot again on Largo Grotta Ardito, boom mic included.

Before Assunta boards the train, her Mother gives her a few things: pistol (Colt Automatic, calibre .45), passport for England, address of the traitor (Vincenzo), photograph of the traitor (Vincenzo), picture of San Giovanni (May he keep a hand over you), 11.000 Italian lira (Put them in the chest) and the outward ticket. Presumably shot at Polignano station, but not confirmed so far.

The London train with BR Mk.1 coaching stock arrives at Edinburgh Waverley station.

Mrs. Sullivan has just learned that her Italian maid will not be showing up because she, the maid, is pregnant. Waverley Station, as suggests Roland-Francois Lack too, looking up the vehicle access ramp towards Waverley Bridge. 'Battle of the Sexes' was shot on the steps.

The view goes down the vehicle ramp, as Assunta (Monica Vitti) leaves Waverley station and is approached by Mrs. Sullivan (Deborah Stanford),who is urgently looking for a maid. Assunta reaches the junction, where Lawn Market, Upper Bow, Johnston Terrace and Castlehill branches off and the Royal Mile leading up on the right site towards Edinburgh Castle. Walt Disney's version of 'Greyfriars Bobby' (1961) was shot on Esplanade (see Captures 11 and 12), by the end of the Royal Mile.

…as she looks around, puzzled by two hippies crossing the square in front of the church, which was Highland Tolbooth St. John’s Church since 1956 but closed in 1979, and then spots the restaurant, where Vincenzo works in the kitchen.

Rosina (Catherine Feller) reports that Vincenzo has not yet reappeared. Assunta later learns that he is supposed to be in Sheffield. Edinburgh again? ... No, click the date to find out.

Assunta travels aboard a 1952 Leland Royal Tiger from Leeds to Sheffield. So far unknown location, possibly somewhere in the Pennines.

While approaching the city limits, a sheep flock next to a cigarette advertisement comes into view, with unknown power station visible in the background ... but it only took a few hours for Neil Webster to identify Blackburn Meadows Power Station, Tinsley, Sheffield (SJ).28

Anthony Booth as John, supposedly amateur racing driver with some knowledge of Italian like "Ah, buongiorno signorina. Bene, grazie. Prego. Arrivederci. Spaghetti, eh ...", offers Assunta the chance to ride along. The opposite view shows the then row of houses along Granville Street, Sheffield. Demolished in the 1990s due to the contruction of the Purple Route for the South Yorkshire Supertram.

Since the Jaguar E-type has now been repaired, John tells his sidekick he can now remove the jack. Granville Street, overlooking Sheaf Street and Ponds Forge works.

The Jag turns from Granville Street towards Sheaf Street, driving for Rotherham, no longer possible, as the entire area has been completely changed.

After a spontaneous detour in the Jag across the lawn of the local football field, the two reach the gatehouse of the Steel Peach & Tozer works, Sheffield Road, Templeborough, Rotherham. (SD)

While John hands the car keys to the doorman, who then informs the actual owner of the Jag by phone, Assunta gets out and hurries away on Sheffield Road. The steel works closed in 1993 and the building has now been demolished. (SD)

John is eventually able to convince Assunta with "Io conosco tutti i posti dove danzano italiani". In front of the Tinsley works staff canteen, Information from Sheffield History website (SD) ...

… where they meet a girl who knows Vincenzo Macaluso because he wanted to marry her, but she rejected him. At the same time, Vincenzo is dancing inside, undetected in the crowd of a boisterous company party. In the background, the Tinsley works can be seen again.

John sets off for home with Assunta in tow. We see them on the steps leading to the Neepsend Station site. Painted black for filming. Twenty years after filming, the Sheffield Ski Village, a resort with artificial ski slopes at the Parkwood Springs area, was opened on the southern site of the hill. At the time the largest resort of its kind in Europe, it had to close in 2012 after several fires.

John walks ahead on the pedestrian bridge leading to Parkwood Road and crossing the then Woodhead Line between Sheffield and Manchester. Fully electrified since 1954, so the 1.5 kV DC overhead catenary can be recognised.

'pdprop' identified the location and sent this 'now' shot. The railway foot-bridge leading originally from Wallace Road, Parkwood Springs to Parkwood Road, Neepsend in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Looking down on the terraced houses on what was Farfield Road, now swallowed up by the Farfield Industrial Estate.

He offers Assunta a place to stay overnight and points in the direction of Farfield Road where he lives. By the way, he already had the black eye before the fight in the staff canteen.

But Assunta's hopes for Vincenzo's appearance were in vain. In the evening, during windy rainy weather, she is picked up again by John, who actually works for Crabtree and Nicol Limited, located at Burgess Street, Sheffield city centre. Assunta accompanies John to an away game of his Rugby team. So far unknown location.

When one of the opposing players gets injured, the ambulance arrives immediately. To Assunta's surprise, one of the two stretcher bearer turns out to be Vincenzo. So far unknown location.

Assunta makes her way to the hospital in Bath where Vincenzo apparently works. Crossing the well-known Clifton Suspension Bridge, well known as a suicide bridge too, which has spanned the Avon Gorge and the River Avon since 1864, connecting Clifton in Bristol with Leigh Woods in Somerset.

The delivery van in which Assunta is hitchhiking is driving along the landmarking Royal Crescent in Bath, Somerset.

The 1963 Austin Mini Pickup stops opposite St. Paul's Hospital, allowing Assunta to get out. But is it Bristol or Bath? ... in fact neither: this is Hillingdon Hospital, Pield Heath Road, Uxbridge (SD)

While Assunta is searching for Vincenzo at the hospital, she glances into the operating room and faints. It later turns out that she has the same rare blood type as a young man who was admitted shortly before and attempted suicide. With a blood transfusion, the kind I only know from Hammer horror movies with Peter Cushing, she saves his life. Frank Hogan, who had wanted to end his life because of heartbreak, gives her a ride around town as a thank you. Taken on Great Pulteney Street in Bath. The Holburne Museum can be recognized in the far background.

The next hospital is obviously a bullseye, as evidenced by Vincenzo's (Carlo Giuffrè) panicked reaction when he discovers Assunta getting out in the car-park. Cossham Hospital, Lodge Road, Bristol. (SD)

The audience now knows that Assunta won't find what she's looking for at the third hospital either. When she returns to the car with Frank, they encounter two figures dressed in black. And we now know that this is again the car-park of Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge.

Poor Assunta has collapsed in front of the – obviously fake – grave and is loudly expressing her grief, while Vincenzo secretly watches the scene from the background.

Arriving at his country house outside Bath, Frank can't wait to have engagement sex, but Assunta keeps him at a distance with a poker until Frank's mother bursts into the bedroom. Jobs Mill, Five Ash Lane, Crockerton, Wiltshire. (SD)

Outside Frank's bridal shop located in Bath, Assunta unexpectedly runs into Dr. Tom Osborne (Stanley Baker) again, who had performed the blood transfusion.

George Street, Bath and spotted through all the clag and mist and rain by Russell Groves. Splendid work, above and beyond the call of duty. Give that man another sugar lump in his coffee!

George Street again, but the opposite view towards the corner with Milson Street, as Assunta tells him that she will soon marry Frank. The surgeon reacts with visible surprise, congratulates her, and then quickly goes on his way.

The physician, however, doesn't seem particularly enthusiastic and makes flimsy excuses while getting into his car.

Assunta, however, does not give up and waits by the St. Paul's Hospital until Dr. Osborne finishes work. Again shot on the grounds of the Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge.

Antony Blair returned to the location, outside the brick built Maternity Building of Hillingdon Hospital where he was born in 1966.

The surgeon takes Assunta into town and parks his 1965 Rover 2000 in front of a pub... Roland-Francois believes this is St Martin's Court and they go into "The Salisbury" pub in St Martin's Lane, WC2. Remember Victim? The chequered flag in the background was the sign for a motor / railway / military enthusiasts bookshop. They used to sell my Miniature Warfare magazine, and also my books on wargaming. It turns out that the pub is a meeting place for gay men, and Dr. Osborne also shows Assunta the guy who is supposedly responsible for Frank's suicide attempt. Actually The Salisbury was well known as a gay-friendly pub from Oscar Wilde's time onwards.

Assunta is devastated, but Dr. Osborne comes to her aid. He gets her a job at the hospital and pays for a language course. The young Sicilian woman – okay, Vitti was already 36 years old at the time of filming – also seems to be emancipating herself visually.

When she happens to glance into the Tea Room across the street, she can hardly believe her eyes. Inside sits a lively Vincenzo, flirting with an unknown blonde.

Assunta hurries back to the nurses' residence, changes her clothes, puts the pistol in her coat pocket, puts on dark sunglasses, and heads back to the restaurant. But the couple has already disappeared …

... so she begins to search the surrounding area for Vincenzo, here at the Royal Crescent, which also features in 'The Wrong Box', 'Catch Us If You Can' and 'Kipps'.

By the railing of the Royal Crescent, Assunta finally spots the two of them strolling across the lawn towards the row of trees along Royal Avenue. The Marlborough Buildings can be seen on the west side.

The Girl follows the pair straight across the lawn, as part of the Royal Victoria Park overlooked by the magnificent Royal Crescent as backdrop, and pulls the Pistol from her coat pocket ...

While the blonde, who turns out to be Dr. Hopkins' wife, is admitted – of course – to St. Paul's Hospital and examined – of course – by Dr. Osborne, a hyperventilating Vincenzo tells him about a young Italian Girl with a Pistol who tried to shoot him. The surgeon then immediately goes to the police station, where Assunta is already waiting to answer for her, obviously failed, act of revenge.

Visibly annoyed and deeply disappointed, Osborne promptly puts Assunta in the car. On the way to the airport the car takes the Severn Bridge, which was inaugurated by Elizabeth II only two years before the film's release.

By arrival at Bristol (Lulsgate) Airport, officially opened on 1 May 1957 and situated at North Side Road, the new control tower from 1962 comes into view. Osborne buys her a plane ticket to Rome, even though Assunta refuses to leave the country. However, after the surgeon has tell her that her shots missed Vincenzo and instead hit Dr. Hopkins' wife, she finally boards the aircraft of the Cambrian Airways to London.

On board the Vickers Viscount 701 turboprop Assunta is overcome with doubt, and her allegorical daydreams revolve around the shame that awaits her in Sicily. So she spontaneously decides to stay in Swinging London …

... where sometime later a large demonstration is currently taking place ...

... in Trafalgar Square. Roland-Francois believes that this scene is a real demo, cut in with a fake demo filmed at Lincoln's Inn Field. An anti-Vietnam War demo occurred in Trafalgar Square on March 28, 1967, organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, where one of the participants demonstratively holds up the Mao Bible.

Assunta learns from Tom that he is now working in London and will soon be divorced from his wife, while Big Ben 's tower and the Houses of Parliament are visible in the background.

From Waterloo Bridge... and looking at this again in the 2026 reboot I may have chosen this view for the horizon alignment but really I should be closer in the South Bank complex to match the concrete barriers. (SJ)

On the way, Assunta asks Tom to stop briefly and then gets out to draw his attention to the advertising poster on which her legs are shown... Island roundabout, Elephant and Castle, Waterloo area, my Soldier shop was 500 yards away, 'Genevieve' passed close by, 'File of the Golden Goose' was opened just up the road and 'The Sandwich Man' passed within a spit. As Assunta tries to slip away unnoticed, she is discovered by Tom, who then follows her. The set of steps outside the Royal Albert Hall, London, appears in 'Ipcress File', 'Love Story', 'The 39 Steps' (1978) and others.

One day Vincenzo calls Assunta, who is currently busy with promotional photos... Thames Embankment, near Cheney Walk, Albert Bridge, so 'Clockwork Orange' and 'Blind Date' territory.

He tells her that he is currently passing through London and runs a delivery service for 'Shoes Italian Style', and that he would like to see her again.

But Assunta shows no interest, whereupon Vincenzo returns to his 1965 Bedford HA company car without accomplishing anything.

After learning that Tom is on holiday at Jersey, Assunta sets off for the East Sussex coast. Driving on Beachy Head Road, with the impressive Beachy Head Cliffs visible in the background, lighthouse included.

The shape of the cliffs are constantly changing due to coastal erosion. SD

But instead of Newhaven, we see then Assunta in Brighton on King's Road, with the Harbour Hotel in the background. Was this an intended montage sequence by director Mario Monicelli or a mistake by Editor Ruggero Mastroianni, unfamiliar with the locations? We don't know.

A cycle path allowed me safer access to the road. SD

Now we are actually at the docks in Newhaven, where Assunta is steering the car towards the Ferry Port.

However, the boarding ramp guards man informs her that shipping traffic is suspended due to the stormy weather.

... and that the next ferry won't depart until the following day, if at all. In the background, the pedestrian bridge of Newhaven Harbour station can be seen.

This was as close as I could get to the boarding ramp. The area is restricted and to gain access would mean getting the permission of this authority and that authority so the wrong side of the fence will have to do. SD

So Assunta continues on to neighboring Brighton, where she reaches the city limits by Marine Drive.

And now a shot from Brighton again, where our heroine can be seen on Madeira Drive. The western terminus of Volk's Electric Railway, Aquarium station, can be seen in the background on the right.

Assunta arrives in front of the Grand Hotel in Brighton. The same shot is used 11 years later in 'Quadrophenia'. Anthony Hayward notes that she exits on the left side, a remarkable maneuver. Indeed, as in fact the Mini was driven by a stand-in and parked in such a way that the view is obstructed by one of the pillars. After a barely perceptible cut, Monica Vitti then exits on the passenger side, with the then intact West Pier visible in the background on the left.

Assunta is walking towards the lobby. The IRA bombed the hotel in 1984 in an attempt to assassinate the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The 'Iron Lady' survived unharmed, but five people lost their lives.

No sooner she enters her room than the phone rings. It is Tom on the other end of the line, still in holliday on Jersey, but actually speaking from the conservatory of the end coastguard cottage at Birling Gap, East Sussex, with the Seven Sisters in the background. (SD)

The end cottage was demolished in 1973 due to coastal erosion. Since then three more of the eight cottages have been demolished. The cliff edge is now approximately 120 feet further inland. SD

Because Assunta is complaining of a headache, Tom suggests she get some aspirin. So she sets off for the nearest chemist.

Assunta crosses Edward Street at the junction with Grand Parade and Pavilion Parade, with the Royal Pavilion visible in the background, built from 1815 to 1822 by architect John Nash for George IV, Prince of Wales.

It was hardly surprising to Assunta that the pharmacy had aspirin, but pretty surprising that there Vincenzo suddenly appears, who had followed her from the hotel. Now they stroll by the colonnades below the Madeira Terrace, alongside Madeira Drive. Vincenzo showers Assunta with compliments about her new look, while the Palace Pier can be seen in the background.

This is taken slightly further east of the exact location which is now fenced off and covered in scaffolding. The arches have become structurally unsafe and will cost an estimated £23 million to repair. I shall distract you from that fact with these Aston Martins. SD

Assunta lets Vincenzo invite her for a café. He tells her about his future plans and that he intends to get married, but it's not working out with the local women. This is above the entrance to the Palace Pier theatre. (SD)

They eventually end up in Assunta's hotel room. While Vincenzo is already looking forward to making up sex, she pulls out her pistol, which almost makes him wet himself. After the one-night stand, Vincenzo wakes up alone and has to watch from the window as Assunta leaves the city in the early morning. However, she heads in the wrong direction in relation to Newhaven, because the white Morris Mini is driving on King's Road towards Portsmouth, from where the ferry to Jersey actually departs. This is the Hotel Victoria, 64 Kings Road. In 2016 the building was refurbished and reopened as the Harbour Hotel. (SD)

Vincenzo immediately leaves the Grand Hotel, gives chase and reaches the ferry port ...

... but the vessel has already set sail, of course with Assunta aboard. David Burns points out some inconsistencies: "The Mini drives onto the ferry located on the east side of Newhaven Harbour (Port) which is the side where the ferries sailed from. Then we see Carlo Giuffre’s character arrive into Newhaven Harbour in his Bedford HA van but initially he is driving on the west side of the harbour / River Ouse; one can see two ferries berthed on the east side in the background as he drives past. However in the next shot we see him miraculously on the east side as he tries to get to the ferry before it leaves, he pulls up as we look seaward with the ferry leaving the port."

Vincenzo immediately gets back in and tries, by driving along the pier, to catch up with the ferry. But the far background reveals, that we see no Newhaven harbour, nor Portsmouth port. David continues from above, "Now this is where it gets bizarre as he then gets back in the van and drives and turns a corner to the right and is miraculously in the port of Ancona, heading down the quayside towards the ‘Lanterna Rossa.’" Indeed Ancona, Marche region, with Duomo di San Ciriaco, located on Colle Guasco, in the far background.

While he waves and shouts to attract Assunta's attention, the vessel has already reached the harbour entrance. David again: "He pulls to a halt to observe the ship she’s (Monica Vitti) is supposed to be on, it then cuts to a shot of her aboard a ship, indeed the cross channel ferry type she would have been on from Newhaven which is obviously not the ship he is watching leave Ancona port."

There is or was a mural of Monica Vitti on the wall just below the Lanterna Rossa, as we can see in David's comparison he sent in.

Finally, Vincenzo even climbs onto the dam crest of the Molo Foraneo Nord and runs towards the lighthouse. But it's all in vain, so frustrated Vincenzo can only shout some vulgar swear words after Assunta. In the background, the shipyards of Ancona, including the Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navale, founded in 1963, now as Fincantieri shipyard are visible.
