Meet Simon Cherry

The Reverend Simon Cherry narrates "This is my parish, London's Docklands." Looking along the River Thames towards Tower Bridge with the wharves and warehouses of Wapping to the right at the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral in the centre distance.

"They call me "The Rev" down here, instead of the padre as they did in the 8th Army." The Reverend's pastoral duties appear to take him far and wide as the Liverpool Overhead Railway to the right places this in Liverpool, Lancashire, specifically to the south-west of Seaforth Sands station after the line has passed over Shore Road where the cranes of Gladstone Branch Dock No. 2 can be seen in the background.

"This is generally known as a tough locality, but that's due to the conditions of life."

"It's my experience that, underneath, people are much the same everywhere, wherever they live, in town or country" The shore of the Thames below buildings on Rotherhithe Street SE16. A similar view can be seen in 'The Boy and the Bridge'.

"I make it my business to dig down as deep as I can into people's lives, as deep as they'll let me, that is, . . . " Looking east towards the bend on Paradise Street in Rotherhithe SE16.

The bend remains as a footpath through King's Stairs Gardens but the buildings on Paradise Street have long been demolished. PW

"Of course, my ex-batman Charlie Banks always said this is an alibi, that I ought to have been a detective not a padre." The since lost Paradise Street which features in 'Behemoth the Sea Monster'.

"Actually, it was through Charlie Banks and his motor car, that I got mixed up with that strange affair at Harling Manor . . ." The Reverend's parish is truly large, this is the River Liffey flowing through Dublin with Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the far bank and the gas holder belonging to Dublin Gasworks on Hanover Quay in the left distance. The location can be seen in 'Rooney', 'The Big Gamble', 'Another Shore', 'Ulysses', 'Tim Driscoll's Donkey' and 'The Quare Fellow'.

". . . a long way from dock land." Panning left brings the Custom House on Custom House Quay, Dublin 1 into frame.

"It all started one evening in our boys' club . . . . "

Giving the Reverend use of his car, Charlie Banks (Arthur Lovegrove) removes the starting handle after the engine bursts into life. Outside the Angel public house on Rotherhithe Street SE16.

The Angel has seen many changes over the years and is thankfully still open. PW

As a cloud of exhaust enveloped the car, the Reverend Simon Cherry (Hugh Moxey) releases the hand brake. The Angel also features in 'The Boy and the Bridge', 'Inadmissible Evidence'

Doors and windows have changes position during the intervening years. PW

Charlie and a group of Boys push the car as "The Rev" sets off for the West Country on a well earned break. Since renamed Bermondsey Wall East, this is Rotherhithe Street with number 41, now known as the "Leaning House", in the right background.

Number 41 stands defiant. PW

The MG corners and heads away from the dock lands. Facing eastward from Paradise Street, looking along St. Marychurch Street in SE16 towards the junction with Lower Road.

A bus overtakes the Reverend on the road to Reading.

Passing signs for Salisbury, Yeovil and Plymouth, Simon is directed through a village of thatched cottages on the way to the the coast. Alleyns Lane, Cookham Dean in Berkshire with Cromwell Cottage to the right.

When the MG's engine backfires and stops as a gale begins to blow, the Reverend seeks shelter at Harling Manor, the remote home of Lady Harling and her Family. The Ravenspoint Hotel at Trearddur Bay on Holy Island, Anglesey.

After accusing Alan Colville of murder when Lady Harling's daughter Lisa is found dead, Henry Dantry relates the story of how the deceased invalid had met and married her husband.

The couple spend their honeymoon on the Riviera as the jealous Henry continues that it was then that Lisa found Alan kissing Dorothy.

When found with Monica Harling and questioned by "The Rev", Alan tells a different story as he explains what occurred on the honeymoon.

Having listened to everyone during the night, the Reverend Simon Cherry opens the curtains to see the Doctor's car approaching the house.
