All Over the Town

Returning from service in the RAF, Nat Hearn (Norman Wooland) makes his way from the platform and into Tormouth. Lyme Regis railway station on Uplyme Road.

Trumble (Bryan Forbes) cycles as fast as he can through town. The junction of Broad Street, Pound Street and Silver Street in Lyme Regis, Dorset.

The young reporter can't wait to tell the newspaper's owner Sam Vane that Nat is back. Broad Street in Lyme Regis. Various views of the town and harbour appear in other production including 'The French Lieutenant’s Woman', 'Wreck Raisers' and 'Ammonite'.

Trumble parks his bike and rushes into the offices of The Clarion. Bridge Street, almost opposite Lyme Regis Museum.

Andrew went in for a copy of "The Clarion" and came out with ten days in Ayia Napa. So long as he did not charge it to RS! (RL)

70 years ago that Range Rover would be legally parked. Too right Andrew, those were days. (RL)

After exchanging pleasantries with Sleek, the local funeral director, the former flying officer heads to The Clarion's offices. Broad Street, with a former bank, built with stone, to the left.

On his way, Nat is spotted by Miss Gelding (Fabia Drake) and Major Martindale (Henry Edwards). Looking towards the seafront on Broad Street.

Reporter Sally Thorpe (Sarah Churchill) approaches as Nat helps Billy Grimmett (Edward Rigby) paint his boat.

Having been covering during his absence, Sally tells Nat that she can't wait for him to take back his mundane job at the newspaper.

The two Clarion journalists report on a wedding.

Sally and Nat approach Grimmett who tells them that the council has agreed to redevelop the harbour area and his cottage is to be demolished.

Seafront - 'Raspberry sauce on mine please, Norman', requests Andrew. (RL)

Mr. Vince (Patrick Macnee) explains that the harbour development will have no housing but a new estate will be provided on the edge of town.

.....but what about 'The Harbour Inn' on the seafront?enquires Andrew......a good question! (RL)

Vince and Sally listen as Grimmett mourns the old days before the harbour became silted up. Victoria Pier can be seen to the top right.

Andrew reveals that there are even more boats in all that silt now. (RL)

Nat takes Sally to his small yacht and the two go for a sail. The Cobb, Lyme Regis' harbour, with properties on Marine Parade in the background.

Following the death of Sam Vane and the appointment of Nat as editor, the latest edition of The Clarion is distributed. Lyme Regis station approach with Uplyme Road top right.

The newspapers are thrown onto the platform near to the news kiosk. A builders yard now occupies the station's site.

Now, just after heavy rain. SD

Readers pick up their copies of the paper that now features honest reporting.

The Bay Hotel, Marine Parade. Now converted to apartments and a restaurant. SD

Visitors as well as the residents of Tormouth all read a new style of news. Pound Street, at the junction with Broad Street and Silver Street.

Lucky that flatbed was parked outside so that Andrew could capture the right angle. Perfectionist! (RL)

In town, the post is delivered as well as The Clarion. This garage on Broad Street is now a Tesco store.

And Andrew confirms that it is indeed a Tesco store. (RL)

At the station, Gerald Vane (Cyril Cusack) returns from London and purchases a copy of The Clarion. Lyme Regis station was at the end of a six and a half mile long branch line from Axminster which closed in November 1965.

The Lyme Regis station building was dismantled in 1979 and re-erected at Alresford on the Mid Hants Railway. SD

Baines warns Gerald Vane about his harbour redevelopment being featured negatively in the news.

Trumble fetches Nat from Mr. Wainer's house as Gerald lays off the newspapers workforce.

Confident that the newspaper will not appear, Baines hears from George Sleek (John Salew) that there are new staff at The Clarion.

It is still a "Boots" on the right hand side and as Andrew points out their blind in 1949 is reflected in "Haddon's" window. (RL)
