A toyshop. 'The dolls' hospital was Barry Elder's Doll Museum in Hammersmith'. ~ Chris Fujiwara.
I remember this shop, it was probably in Glenthorne Road, but I believe that it is long since gone.
I discovered the exact location of Barry Elder's Doll Museum in Hammersmith, writes Greg, our super sleuth, on: http://www.nortelpensions.com/documentlibrary/summer_2002.pdf with this text:
"The second puzzle is a 'Ruth Allam' who used to run The Dolls Hospital at Hammersmith, where it alternated as a confectioners. She transferred ownership to a 'David Allam' in 1948, but stayed on until 1949. It was then sold as a business in 1952 to a 'Mr Elder' and moved to 114-116 Glenthorne Road. At this point it became the London Dolls' Hospital."
Then, I analyzed this video from youtube:Bunny Lake is Missing 8, 4:58 - 5:28: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpXJZa0kkhw&feature=related, and the picture bk012n which I found in Google Maps Street View confirms the information by Chris Fujiwara and fortunately the building is still standing. This scene was filmed on Glenthorne Road at the corner with Studland Street.
"Dolls Hospital" is now "The Fireplace Shop", 108-116 Glenthorne Road, Hammersmith, London, W6 0LP.
"Soho Timber Supply" is now "Douglas & Gordon", 118-120 Glenthorne Road, Hammersmith, London, W6 0LP.
