Case for P.C. 49, A

A well known hostess, Della Dainton, holds a party at Tower House. Peter Brown has found the location, Royal Victoria Patriotic Building (formerly 'School', formerly 'Asylum', now luxury flats and offices, which overlooks the railway off Trinity Road, Wandsworth. The current postal address is John Archer Way, London SW18

Whilst the house party is in full swing, jewel thieves Cutler (Jack Stewart) and Chubby Price (Michael Balfour), make their getaway.

Victor Palantine arrives to relieve Cutler and Price of the jewels. David Copley advises that is Park Street in Windsor with the gates and railings at the end of the street giving access to onto the Long Walk. The gate posts feature in 'Tunes of Glory'.

As can be seen in David's comparison, there is little change to the location.

Della takes a taxi to Victor's home. Park Street in Windsor identified by David Copley who adds that "The ornate building on the right at the end of the street is the old Post Office which was demolished in 1972." The street also appears in 'Quest for Love', 'Carry On Again, Doctor', 'Carry On Regardless', 'Carry On Loving' and 'No Sex Please, We’re British'.

David's view of the street shows that the distinctive Greek style portico of the building a little further along the road is still there.

Della Dainton (Christine Norden) pays the fare. Outside number 7 Park Street located by David Copley who notes that, although the boot-scraper has disappeared, the railings are identical.

David notes that "Despite this being in a conservation area there has been some rebuilding two doors down from this property. It looks like the building with two bricked up door arches has been rebuilt in an identical style to the adjacent buildings."

In plain clothes, P.C. 49, Archibald Berkeley-Willoughby (Brian Reece), arrives at Della's apartment as her bodyguard. Jules Ballantyne has a good record with Art Deco and has traced this to Hightrees House, Nightingale Lane, London SW12 (RL)

Real pub, or a fake? Richard Lewis tells us "This is without doubt the Three Tuns public house on Market Street, just behind the Guildhall in Windsor" a street that also features in 'The Stranger Left No Card', 'Terror Street', 'Allez France!' and 'Tunes of Glory'.

Well identified and photographed by Barry Thompson. An excellent match, and the cobblestones are still there!

Della arrives at the jewel thieves hide out. This alley ran between numbers 2 and 3 Park Street and through the entrance-way can be seen the front doors of 31 and 32 opposite and is also seen in 'The Last Page'. Location found by David Copley.
