Daughter of Darkness

Just a few days before returning to England, Murdoch’s Mammoth Fair heads to the last village on their Irish tour.

An establishing shot of the fair's destination, the fictional village of Ballyconen. Recognised by Clive Turner, this is the White Horse public house on High Street in Westlington, Buckinghamshire. Mary Young tells us that her late husband Dennis was eight years old at the time of filming and is seen here crossing the scene on the horse and cart.

Lionel and Cynthia take a temporary break from the South West to venture into Buckinghamshire and take some shots for us, here, finding that the White Horse has become 'La Chouette'. (RL)

Stopping at the pub, Dan (Maxwell Reed) gets out of the truck that he’s been driving. Clive Turner advises that this is outside the White Horse with Wootton Lane in the background.

Turning as she walks towards the church where she works, Emmy Baudine (Siobhán McKenna) notices the vehicles that have parked up around the pub. Clive identifies this as Wootton Lane in Westlington and the property in the left background is known as The Green.

Emmy remarks to young Betty O'Dea how exciting it is that the fair has arrived. More of Wootton Lane found by Clive Turner.

Mrs. O’Dea hurries outside and angrily tells her child not to speak with Emmy. This property, seen in capture 3 from the other direction, stands on Wootton Lane, Westlington. Identification by Clive Turner.

Just a little further to the right from Capture 6 Lionel and Cynthia were told by a local that the cottage was a shop at the time of the film. (RL)

Dan (Maxwell Reed) sees the commotion outside the shop and heads over to Emmy. Clive identifies this as facing the White Horse in Westlington, Buckinghamshire.

The fairground boxer introduces himself to Emmy. Facing Westlington Lane from outside the unnamed property at the end of Wootton Lane in Westlington, a hamlet adjacent to the village of Dinton to the south-west of Aylesbury located by Clive Turner.

Realising that she's not the most popular girl in the village, Dan invites Emmy to visit the fair that evening. Looking towards Wootton Lane and it's junction with High Street and Westlington Lane to the right in Westlington, Buckinghamshire. Location discovered by Clive Turner.

That evening, Emmy meets Dan at the fair and watches him perform in the ring.

After badly scratching Dan’s face when he makes advances towards her, Emmy runs back to Father Cocoran at the church. Lionel and Cynthia provide the location for us as the Church of St Peter and St Paul a short distance east at Dinton. (RL)

And provide us with a shot of the door on the south side of Dinton Church to support their identification. (RL)

When the women of Ballyconen complain about Emmy’s flirtatious nature, Father Cocoran sends her to work for the Tallent family in Yorkshire. Court Barton Farm in Lanreath, Cornwall.

After the long journey, a bus brings Emmy to village of Haskerton. The Village Green in Lanreath with St. Marnarch’s Church dominating the scene.

Pausing whilst taking sheep to the farm, Larry Tallent (Grant Tyler) watches as Emmy is helped off the bus. Outside the entrance to Court Barton Farm in Lanreath with Cob Cottages to the right.

Larry approaches Emmy and discovers that she is the new girl who’s come to work at the farm. Looking from the gateway of Court Barton Farm towards the former Post Office on the extreme right.

Jacob (Arthur Hambling) takes charge of the sheep whilst Larry and Emmy continue to the house. Court Barton Farm, Lanreath.

Having returned to England, Murdoch’s fair approaches Haskerton.

That evening, Bess Stainforth (Anne Crawford), her husband Robert (Barry Morse), Julie Tallent (Honor Blackman), Emmy and Mr. Tallent (George Thorpe) are driven to the fair by Larry.

After the two bump into each other at the fair, Emmy runs from Dan's grasp and he chases her toward an isolated farmhouse.

When Dan's dog starts howling and barking outside her barn, Mrs. Smithers (Iris Vandeleur) investigates to find the boxer's lifeless body lying on the ground.

The next morning Julie calls Larry in for his breakfast.

Larry leaves Joseph to carry on herding the cows. Court Barton Farm, Lanreath in Cornwall.

Whilst watching the sea in a cove near to the farm, Emmy meets David Price.

Soon after his body is discovered in the Tallent's blazing barn, the congregation remember David Price in their prayers during Sunday service. St. Marnarch’s Church seen from the graveyard.

That evening, the lads from the village creep up to the church to find out who plays the organ in the middle of the night. The entrance of St Marnock's Church, Lanreath.

While Policemen search the moors looking for Larry's killer, Bess makes her way to the church.

After coming across a large dog in the graveyard, Bess makes her way into the church. Clive Turner learnt from the Dinton parish news of December 2017 that this final scene was shot in the churchyard of Saint Peter and Paul's church in Dinton.

On the south side of the church to the right of the main entrance. Lionel and Cynthia say "sorry" to the good people of Dinton but the final scene in the film was filmed at Lanreath. The evidence looks pretty convincing and they have visited both churches for us. (RL)

Emmy runs from the church into the graveyard where Dan's dog is waiting. Clive advises that this is Saint Peter and Paul's church on Upton Road in Dinton, Buckinghamshire.
