Amsterdam Kill, The

There is a war going on between several Chinese drugs syndicates regarding heroin. In Amsterdam a Chinese drug dealer got killed. Intersection Reguliersgracht and Prinsengracht, Amsterdam

It took Frank a lot of thinking and research to identify this location. In the film it says; Herrengracht (misspelled because it is Herengracht) but it turns out that it wasn’t the Herengracht after all. It is the Prinsengracht.

The camera moves to the 'Jardine House' aka 'Connaught Center' in Hong Kong, home of the US Drug Enforcement Agency. There is an increasing amount of murders between several syndicates and it worries the agency. Riley Knight (Leslie Nielsen) from the Amsterdam DEA and Howard Odums (Bradford Dillman) from the Hong Kong DEA are discussing what to do. 1 Connaught Place, Central Hong Kong

Larry Quinlan (Robert Mitchum) Steps out of the bus and walks home. Ram Street, Wandsworth, London SW18 looking north, with the rear of the Palace Theatre to the right. At the time of filming the theatre was a bingo club but closed in 1979. Since 2016 it has been used as a gymnasium.

Larry comes home and he lives above the Ram Brewery. On the television he hears about the recent murders in the Chinese community in Amsterdam and Hong Kong. Then he gets a phone call from Chung Wei (Keye Luke) who has a business proposal for this former DEA agent. They meet days after in the horse market in Utrecht (Sartreweg 1) and here Chung tells him that the deal is written on a piece of paper together with a lot of money and a plane ticket to Hong Kong. Larry calls his old time Chinese friend and ex-cop Jimmy Wong (George Cheung) for some assistance. Larry lands on the airport of Hong Kong. Kai Tak Airport, Hong Kong

Larry meets in the DEA Agency his former friend Howard and he tells him of the deal that an important dealer (Chung) wants to step out of the business because of the drugs war in Amsterdam. Chung will provide the DEA all the information he knows in exchange for money and an anonymous identity. Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong.

Meanwhile in Amsterdam Chung takes an evening walk and has a quick meeting with Jimmy Wong who flew in from New York and he will protect Chung. Herengracht 81, Amsterdam

This beautiful canal house was built in 1626 for the architect Pieter Fransz who also lived there. Little has changed since 1977.

In Hong Kong Larry has a talk with Paul Fon (uncredited) from the local narcotic bureau Location: Unknown

Chung calls to Larry and tells him where they can find a factory where they make the drugs, instead of a factory, they find a small amount of heroin on a boat. Aberdeen Harbour, Hong Kong

Howard congratulates Larry for the information he gave but he is not really impressed. He asks what the next bust will be. Chung calls Larry and gives him a name of very important person of the Chinese syndicate. As a result of that phone call some high level dealer is arrested Hong Kong airport. In Amsterdam Chung has his weekly meeting with all the other Chinese heads of the syndicates. Jimmy Wong sits next to him as his nephew from New York. All of a sudden two masked men with machine guns enter the room and start to shoot. Jimmy manages to shoot one of the two and luckily he and Chung escape from the house safely. Location Unknown. Chung calls Larry and tells him that he has to take a train to Shatin, and close to the station is an abandoned building where they produce the heroin. Chung leaves his house and disappears. He doesn’t trust anybody anymore. Intersection Leidsegracht and Herengracht, Amsterdam.

The same bridge can also be seen in 'The Fault in our Stars', Capture 33.

Larry takes the train to Shatin. Whilst the exact location remains unknown Manuel Gurtner tells us that this Golden Harvest production provides rare scenes filmed on the then Kowloon-Canton Railway (British Section) between Kowloon and Lo Wu, connecting the "New Territories" with China until 1997. The Australian built diesel electric engine N° 53 "H.P.Winslow" of General Motors class GP12 (Clyde Engeneering, 1957) is hauling a passenger train, consisting older coaches delivered by Metropolitan Cammell in 1954, presumably in the Sha Tin Valley. Larry arrives at the train station. Shatin station, Hong Kong. However, Manuel Gurtner says "never trust fade-ins for unknown or exotic locations, because before that, Robert Mitchum as Larry can be seen actually on a northbound train, which he presumably boarded at Shatin station. So the next stop reveals as University station because of the curve position of the tracks and platforms, similar to Mong Kok station in the Kowloon district. As he gets out the train the Japanese built and almost new coaches, delivered in 1974 by Kinki Sharyo, can be recognised".

The abandoned building belongs to The St Andrew College, At night he breaks in and because he is just by himself he can only take photos and do nothing else. Shatin, Hong Kong

Larry discusses the factory with Howard and because Larry doesn’t trust anybody he will tell the police at the last moment its exact location. Howard is so kind to drop him of at his hotel. Arjan Doolaar identifies this as 'The Peninsular', Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong.

Martin Skipper, acknowledges that this shot is off angle but he took it in 2019 for his personal use. Given current circumstances, we appreciate Martin's thought as the prospect of a more accurate shot must be reducing. (RL)

Larry takes the train to Shatin station. Close to the station there are several police units waiting for him to tell them if it is all safe to enter the building, but inside the station he is attacked and kidnapped. The police decides to enter the building anyway but it Is a trap and everybody gets killed. The next day Larry wakes up on a small boat and soon the police arrive and free him. The police received a tip where he was. There must be a leak in the police otherwise it wouldn’t have been a trap. Shatin station, Hong Kong. Manuel also tells us that, as we now (or since Capture 15) know, this is in fact University station, opened in 1956 as Ma Liu Shui station and renamed in 1966 due to the Chinese University of Hong Kong, established in 1963. Together with the modernisation of the railway station in 1983, the entire area has changed significantly since then.

It is too risky for Larry to stay in Hong Kong and he takes the first flight to Amsterdam. Once at the airport he is picked up by Riley Knight. Schiphol Airport Departures 1, Amsterdam

When Frank took this photo almost instantly he was surrounded by security guards who asked him why he was taking photos here. Surprised as he was he said that that was quit common when relatives take a plane to another location. Frank still has no clue what he did wrong. The only remaining recognisable thing is the huge billboard on the right side of the photo.

Riley booked a room for him in a hotel. Hilton Hotel, Apollolaan 138 Amsterdam

The Hilton in Amsterdam south is famous because John Lennon and Yoko Ono held their bed in for peace here in 1969.

It turns out that Jimmy has followed them from Schiphol and he meets Larry in the lobby of the Hilton. Jimmy tells Larry that Chung wants to meet him the same evening at 9 o’clock. Hilton Hotel looking in the direction of the Breitnerstraat, Amsterdam

That evening Larry takes a taxi to the meeting point but the taxi is stopped by several cars and again Larry is kidnapped. Location Unknown

Larry is transported to an unknown location and is asked who his informer is. They know that he won’t talk so they connect him to a lie detector and when the interrogator mention the name Chung Wei all the bells go off. Jimmy gets a phone call where a man asks him to look outside. Here Jimmy sees Larry all tied up but still alive. Location Unknown

Not much later, a little child stands in front of Chung’s house and gives a letter to Jimmy. It is a letter from Chung that directs Jimmy and Larry to another house. Herengracht 81, Amsterdam

It looks like time stood still since the 70’s.

Both of them rush to the location Chung gave them. Brouwersgracht 168A, Amsterdam

Not that many cars anymore in this millennium in Amsterdam.

They enter the building and discover that Chung Wei has been murdered. They are too late. They start looking for a book where Chung wrote down all the drug dealers in Amsterdam and Hong Kong. After a long search they find the book. Brouwersgracht 174, Amsterdam

Originally these warehouses were used to store goods that came in by boat. Nowadays they all transformed into apartments. Thank God they haven’t been demolished because a politician thought it was better like that.

Jimmy and Larry take the car and drive away. Larry reads the book and finds a lead to Juliana Farm in Utrecht. Not long after the car is under fire and bullets fly around everywhere. Herengracht 35 intersection Roomolenstraat

It was so nice and quiet when Frank took this shot and there were no bullets flying around.

Frank thinks that the owners of the boat didn’t bother to rebuild the boat as Americans appear to have a tendency to park their cars in house boats instead of on the street.

The gunmen leave in haste and Jimmy and Larry carefully climb out of the canal. Herengracht 35 intersection Roomolenstraat

Nice and quiet. No burned rubber from screeching car tyres.

Not much later Larry calls Howard Odums to inform him that Chung Wei is dead. Larry tells Howard that he thinks that the chief of the Amsterdam DEA, Riley Knight, is up to his neck into this business. Intersection Haarlemmerstraat and Korte Prinsengracht

Same location but from another angle can also be seen in 'Puppet on a Chain', Capture 25 and can someone repaint that bridge?? It looks like that the (once) white part hasn’t seen any paint since 1977.

Larry is now at a point that he only trusts Jimmy and he doesn’t tell Howard where he says. Both take of and go to the flower market in Aalsmeer. That is another location that was written in Chung’s book. Location: Intersection Haarlemmerstraat and Korte Prinsengracht

This is a Dutch telephone booth but for sure it was not standing here in the 70’s.

Once they are at the flower market Larry sees a known heroin dealer from Berlin and it ends up in chase. The dealer gets hit by a truck and Jimmy and Larry jump on a truck and leave. In Amsterdam they jump off and take a taxi to Juliana Farm in Utrecht. Location Unknown

They drive to Utrecht to the Juliana Farm. Stommeermolen, Geijlwijckerweg 10, Aalsmeer

The greenhouses are gone and the dike has been raised.

Jimmy and Larry poke around in the greenhouses at the farm and see how packages of heroin are packed with bundles of roses. They are discovered and have to run for their life to avoid the bullets, Jimmy gets caught and therefore Larry has to surrender. Then the main man behind the operation shows up and indeed it is Riley Knight from the Amsterdam DEA. All of a sudden the police enter the building and hell breaks loose. Riley tries to escape but he gets shot by his own DEA. He informs Howard via a telex machine that this was Amsterdam's biggest catch of heroin, and that there was also evidence that he was involved. Howard grabs a gun and commits suicide. Location Unknown

Larry is now cleared of all suspicions from the past but it does not seem to affect him. Amstelveld, Intersection Prinsengracht and Reguliersgracht

The early Sunday mornings are for Frank the best time to walk in the city because of its serenity and at that moment of the day you really can see its beauty without being distracted by the noise and the huge crowds of people.
