Storyline:

Terry, a small-time crook, is the driver in a successful bank robbery. He gets his share of the cash and is told to lie low, but instead he goes on the town with Della. Terry is questioned and released by police. Bernie Shelton, the gang boss, kidnaps the girlfriend of the only witness and then he sends his “heavy” to kill Terry, but the “heavy” is shot instead. With police after him, Terry seeks shelter in Della’s apartment but when Della learns that Shelton, a man who spurned her, was behind the raid, she promises to run away with Terry, if he’ll confront his boss at gun-point to get his cut of the heist.

Can you help:

If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.

We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

The opening credits have the branch of the bank robbery set behind them. St. John’s Wood High Street and the corner of Allitsen Road, London NW8 Also seen in The Devil Inside.

It is still a bank to this day.....despite all the robberies!

The camera pulls back to reveal a longer shot of the High Street.

Little has changed even from ground level.

And pans to a shifty looking gentleman in a raincoat watching the bank.

No shifty characters these days.

A closer shot of the shifty gentleman, Linders (Arthur Mullard) and what looks like a genuine passer-by.

The confectioner/tobacconist just had to go.

A member of the bank staff crosses the road to approach the branch for work.

Parking laws appear to have remained quite liberal.

Linders watches events unfold in the window's reflection while a further member of staff walks past him, Jack Connor (Tim Ellison) with his girl friend Ann Seaton (Ann King).

The reflection was even clearer today.

The morning of the raid and Bernie Shelton (Sydney Tafler) and Linders are let into the bank by the cleaner and Terry waits in the van outside.

The "Sir Isaac Newton" on the opposite corner is no longer.

Once again Jack and Ann, like all the staff, follow their normal routine.

I successfully avoided capturing "passers by".

Terry (Peter Reynolds) gets nervous as time progresses and he watches various early morning activities at the shops nearby.

A somewhat modernised frontage.

The Manager of the branch arrives and lets himself in with his own set of keys.

I didn't like to be seen spending too much time photographing the doors to a bank.

Terry becomes even more nervous when a policeman passes.

It might have been more difficult to make a hurried get away today.

  • 'Now' required

This interior shot is shown to acknowledge the uncredited member of the cast May Fetigan who played the part of the bank branch caretaker. May worked in St. John's Wood Studios for a number of years, reporting to a Mr Montague, she was a jack of all trades service provider. She kept the place tidy, made tea and snack etc. With grateful thanks to her son Henry Fetigan, for this background information.

The robbery completed, they make off down the High Street.

Yes, there is a third line of traffic there.

Terry arrives home with his share of the robbery. 9 Ordnance Hill, London NW8

A little more "des res" these days.

  • 'Now' required

Having “flashed the cash” in his usual pub, Terry leaves with Della Byrne (Sandra Dorne) to go to a club. Unknown location.

  • 'Now' required

Inside the pub to perhaps help with identification in the event of it not being a set.

Informers lead the police to Terry who is to appear in a line-up the following morning. Newcourt Street, London NW8 This station has only recently been closed. The camera “pans”, but not really, actually cuts to…

At least it looks as if it is going to be preserved.

….Linders, who has been keeping watch on Terry’s movements, and calls Bernie to update him on events. The corner of Greenberry St and Barrow Hill Road, London NW8 Also seen in Half Moon Street and The Diplomatic Corpse.

Were those telephone boxes for real?

Jack Connor returns to his home to tell is mother that he has to go to attend a line-up parade in the morning. 96a St. John’s Wood Terrace, London NW8

There is now so much greenery that this is the only meaningful angle available.

Ann Seaton is abducted by Bernie. and Connor fails to recognise Terry in the line-up. After visiting Terry at his home Det. Insp. Mason (Lloyd Lamble) exchanges glances with Linders. 9 Ordnance Hill, London NW8 The film concludes in studio sets and brief unrecognisable night shots.

Rather more salubrious now I would imagine.
