Justin tells us that this castle is on private land and it’s named Castle Grace in Tipperary. However, with some investigation one can walk around the property through a lovely apple orchard. (RL)

Another stately home ... Adrian Turner has recognised Dodington Park in Gloucestershire, currently owned by Sir James Dyson. Kubrick used the house twice - pretending it is in Germany it was a single establishing shot and then again as an interior and exterior when Barry disguises himself as the Chevalier and escapes from Germany.

And a stately home. Schloss Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg, Germany and another second unit shot.

With assistance from the head of Historic Collections at Longleat, Adrian Turner has identified this as Longleat House near Warminster in Wiltshire, puzzling him for some time: click the comparison date for his thoughts. The house and estate are also seen in 'Libel', 'Scandal', 'Blue Blood', 'The Missionary' and 'Jubilee'.

"The exact angle cannot be replicated because of trees etc. However, the shot in Barry Lyndon shows only two storeys of the three storey house because the water level is much higher than the house. However, that isn’t the case so I am guessing that Kubrick raised the water level by damming the small river, added a retaining wall (probably no more than a long sheet of plastic or metal) to suggest a boating lake. The effort needed - a civil engineering job - to create this single shot is simply staggering. I am still trying to rid myself of the goose poo I acquired in taking this shot." Adrian Turner (SJ)

A majestic rural sweep... Glen Of The Downs probably taken from somewhere on the slopes of the Sugarloaf, Co. Wicklow, suggests Alan Bourke was first suggested and in Dec '20 Pat Cleary provided a shot which showed the sea so a matte was assumed. However Edward Bick found the real location in Wales ...
