Best Offer, The (aka Deception)

Art expert Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush) arrives at the house of Claire Ibbetson after being hired by the mysterious young heiress. Looking northward along Via Guido Corsi from Largo Odorico Panfili in Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy.

Finding the gates securely locked, Virgil takes shelter beneath the canopy of a bar when it starts to rain. Facing south from Via Giorgio Galatti with Chiesa Evangelica di Confessione Augustana to the left.

The wealthy eccentric looks back at the house as he waits. This should be number 6 Via Giorgio Galatti.

Returning home, Virgil admires his growing collection of paintings after receiving a portrait from his friend Billy Whistler which was bid on and won at one of his own auctions. Palais Pallavicini at 5 Josefsplatz in Vienna, Austria.

Receiving an apologetic phone call from Miss Ibbetson, Virgil returns and is let onto the property by Fred (Philip Jackson). Villa Mainardi Agriturismo on Strada Provincial 93, Gorizzo.

A Blonde Woman walks into Robert's (Jim Sturgess) shop as he examines a rusty set of wheels and cogs that Virgil discovered in the basement of Miss Ibbetson's house. The premises appear to stand on the north side of Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan in Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

At the Ibbetson's property, Virgil pressures Claire to sign the contract enabling him to clear the house.

After waiting for a young Woman to leave Robert's shop, Virgil enters learn that the cogs have been identified as parts of an 18th century automaton. Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan in Trieste.

Hearing a horn sound outside the shop, Robert introduces his girlfriend Sarah (Liya Kebede) to Mr. Oldman. Facing west on the north side of Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan with Via Giorgio Galatti beyond Via Giosuè Carducci in the background.

Intrigued by the reclusive Claire, Virgil returns to the Ibbetson's house where he leaves a contract for her to sign. A composite shot that includes Villa Mainardi Agriturismo to the right.

Throwing the signed contract to the floor in frustration, Virgil storms from the house to be handed the keys by Fred who explains that he'll no longer be providing a caretaker service. Villa Mainardi Agriturismo in Gorizzo.

After reading up on agoraphobia and handing Robert more automata pieces that he finds lying around at the house, Virgil calls Claire as he waits for his flight.

That evening, Virgil again calls Claire but there is no answer. Manuel Gurtner explains that this is the view from Les Étoiles restaurant of the Hotel Atlante Star, located at the corner of Via Giovanni Vitelleschi and Via dei Bastioni in Rome's 13th district. In the background the Vatican State with the cupola of the Peter's Basilica can be seen.

With the automaton almost complete, Robert learns more about Virgil as they walk after a drink together. Marcus Rainbow locates this as Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna, beside the fountain.

Following another row with Claire through her ever closed door, Virgil heads to his favourite restaurant for dinner. Marcus Rainbow recognised the arcades of the Vienna State Opera House.

The disappointed auctioneer heads to another restaurant where he receives a tearful call from Claire. This is the Palmenhaus in Burggarten, Wien with Goethegasse in the right distance. The Palm House also features in ‘The Seven-Per-Cent Solution’ and 'The Gorgon'.

While Virgil tells Robert that he has finally met Claire, Terri (Hannah Britland) enters the shop to tell the craftsman that her Aunt has gone missing and is handed a new tracking device. Looking out onto Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan in Trieste.

Virgil walks towards the open gates before heading towards the bar where he asks Patrons if they have seen a young woman leave the property. Facing north along Via Guido Corsi from Largo Odorico Panfili, Trieste.

Learning that one of the bar's customers saw a woman heading towards the park, Virgil enlists the help of Fred and Robert to search for Claire. Stadtpark, the City Park, in Vienna 1010 located by Marcus Rainbow.

Neglecting his auctioneering duties and customers, Virgil receives a call from his assistant Lambert as he walks the streets. Vienna, the corner Kärntner Ring and Kärntner Straße identified by Marcus.

After Claire is found in the loft of the house, Virgil shakes hands with Robert. The colonnade on the north side of Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan in Trieste.

Following an evening spent together, Virgil takes Claire to his house. The view over the rooftops of Vienna's 6th district, called Mariahilf located by Manuel Gurtner. On the right edge the former Gun Turret from 1944 is partially visible, located in the inner courtyard of the Stiftskaserne (barracks). In the far distance the silhouette of Wienerberg-City with the skyscrapers of the Twin Tower complex can be recognized, located in the 10th district, called Favoriten.

Virgil explains to Claire Ibbetson (Sylvia Hoeks) that it feels more like a hotel than a home. Manuel Gurtner advises that the large top floor terrace is situated at the modernized backside of the Theobaldhof property, located at Theobaldgasse 13, Vienna just next to the known Fillgraderstiege stairways, connecting Theobaldgasse with Fillgradergasse.

Having shown Claire the collection of portraits that he has acquired during his life, Virgil returns home after his final auction. Josefsplatz in Vienna.

A flash forward as Virgil recovers from a breakdown brought on by shock. Manuel Gurtner found the parc of the Martinsbrunn clinic, located at Laurinstrasse 70, Meran in Trentino-Südtirol, Italy.

Sitting at a window in the bar at the end of the street, a girl named Claire (Kiruna Stamell) explains that the property belongs to her and that she often rents it out to cinema people. Through the window can be seen Via Guido Corsi in Trieste with Villa Mainardi Agriturismo, Gorizzo in the distance. It’s all smoke and mirrors.

Alone at home, Virgil takes in the theft of his pictures, his lover's desertion, Robert's empty shop and the appearance of a portrait of Claire painted by her father, Billy. Again at the rooftop terrace with the cupola of Theobaldhof's corner turret behind located by Manuel Gurtner.

Virgil remembers driving to a Police Station . . . Actually, Manuel tells us, just around the corner from Virgil's home, because he has parked his BMW 640i Gran Coupé at Fillgradergasse, Vienna. In the centre background the steps of the Fillgraderstiege by the corner of the Theobaldhof property can be seen.

. . . and deciding not to report what he suspects has happened. The sign is in the style of the Austrian Police and Manuel Gurtner advises that this is the office building of Gertner Group at Fillgradergasse 7 which was dressed as a Police Station with the company logo to the right of the entrance being removed.
