Blazing Caravan, The (A Scotland Yard supporting feature)

In the cold light of day on a lonely road near Edgware, Police sift through the wreckage of a burnt out caravan where they find the charred remains of a man later identified as George Buxton.

Among the new holidaymakers arriving at the south coast resort of Shingleton is a Gentleman from London. Hastings, Sussex, with the harbour arm in the distance. (SD)

Piecing together the occurrences that led to the murder, a Detective (Reginald Hearne) and Superintendent Ellis (Alan Robinson) question the Attendant (Verne Morgan) at the White Circle service station.

Leaving the bank after depositing a cheque for £30,000, George Buxton (Alexander Gauge) buys a newspaper from a Vendor. The corner of Rothesay Avenue and Kingston Road in Wimbledon SW20, which is also seen in 'Dead Man's Chest' and 'The Dover Road Mystery'.

In his hotel room that night, Buxton remembers devising a plan while driving to Woodford after learning that one of his customers had won the football pools treble chance.

The small time printer recalls that he joined taxidermist Arthur Cox to celebrate before helping the inebriated winner home. Now known simply as The Leather Bottle, this sign hangs outside the public house at the corner of Kingston Road and Merton Hall Road in SE19. More of the pub can be seen in ‘Konga’, ‘Never Back Losers’, ‘Dead Man's Chest’ and ‘The Key Man’.

Returning to the location, Peter Bywaters points out that the hanging basket bracket is mounted in the same vertical position as the old pub sign with the markings of previous larger bracket just visible on the brickwork.

Just after the bank closes, Buxton returns to discuss the purchase of bearer bonds with Harris the Manager. Despite attempts as disguising the road sign, Rothesay Avenue in Wimbledon is easily identified.

In a further flashback, a football pools Representative (Michael Ingrams) and a Photographer call at the house where Cox is waiting. Peter Bywaters found the location. It's Merton Hall Road SW19 where, in one stretch of the road there are 21 terrace houses that are completely different from the houses on other sections of the road. Perter explains that each of these terraced properties has tile relief as an architectural feature to the front, each pair having a different design. Some have a triangular apex roof above the first floor window others don't, so finding the right roof line, tile relief pattern and trees whittles it down to number 127.

Peter captured this view of the background buildings adding that "The rear gardens of these houses once backed directly onto the Merton Park Film Studios."

After a vital clue is received, Detectives from Scotland Yard head for Shingleton.
