Calling Bulldog Drummond

I'm just a shade too close to Westminster Bridge here but it's a sparkling winter's day. SJ

Following a series of robberies in a very foggy London, we are taken to a farmhouse in the country. Somewhere between London and Bisley I would say.

Inspector McIver (Charles Victor) has arrived to coax "Bulldog" Drummond out of retirement.

Arrangements are made for Drummond to be teamed up with Sergeant Helen Smith and assume a false identity. New Scotland Yard, Victoria Embankment SW1.

Not a pretty sight nowadays. (SR)

As part of the plan Helen arranges to have a minor car accident with a suspect. Hyde Park Corner W1, facing Admiralty Arch.

An unlikely and brief lull in the traffic produced this opprotunity. SJ

Helen deliberately prangs the car of gangster Arthur Gunns (Robert Beatty) by the side of a lake in a London park. Ron Glenister finds the north-eastern corner of the Serpentine in Hyde Park. (RL)

IN Feb '24, Ron provided a GEV to assist the taker of the comparison shot, and it certainly did! SJ

A passing police car stops to investigate. Helen is charged but gets away with a fine. Ron further determines that the police car is passing the lamp post where the two men are walking in the comparative shot. (RL)

Once again Ron provided a GEV to assist with the eventual comparative shot. That tree on the right was a useful identifier! Turning east from the previous shot. SJ

The gangster's club is locked up for the night, and is checked over by Drummond and Helen. A studio set included for completeness.

Drummond leaves the house that has been provided for the pair during their mission. Jules Ballantyne finds Cheyne Gardens, SW3 and further research establishes No 15, the No 84 clearly a prop. (RL)

The pair stage a crime outside the police station to convince Arthur they are villains. The location looks suspiciously like a set.

Helen follows the action in her rear view mirror.

A man in custody leaves the building handcuffed to a policeman. Ron has also established this location as Duke Street at the corner of Weighhouse Street right, looking toward Oxford Street and Selfridges. (RL)

Drummond "shoots" the cop and his charge. He makes his "getaway" with Helen down a London street. Circa 136 Cromwell Road, London SW5 looking east. (RL)

Not too bad for a hastily taken shot in the middle of the road! The double-porticoed entrance to the Bury House Apartments at no126 are a good marker. Also seen from the other direction in The Full Treatment. SJ

A cop stops Arthur's car and gets him to tail Drummond, but he lets him get away. Cromwell Road at the junction with Exhibition Road, London SW7 looking east with the Victoria & Albert Museum to the left hand side. (RL)

Neil Kenny had to be nippy negotiating the timer on a pedestrian crossing for this shot.

Arthur's girlfriend Molly (Peggy Evans) spies on Drummond and Helen from a teashop across the road from their house. The background shows '84' Cheyne Gardens, SW3 as established by Jules Ballantyne, it reality however it is No 15 and there is certainly no teashop opposite. (RL

Drummond and Helen (Margaret Leighton) leave the house, giving Molly an opportunity to follow them on foot. Once again, No 15 Cheyne Gardens, SW3 as located by Jules. (RL)

Drummond and Helen walk down the road amid street musicians. One of them recognises Drummond from the past and gives away his identity in a conversation overheard by Molly. Identified as the other side of Cheyne Gardens by Jules Ballantyne with further research showing the couple to be outside Nos 5 and 6. (RL)

Drummond and Helen visit Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park.

Not a lot to see but it's busier, albeit lower key than in the past, on Sunday mornings in this north-east corner of Hyde Park. SJ

As the speaker decries the evils of drink, Inspector McIver informs Drummond that Arthur has grassed on him to the police. Speakers' Corner.

Acting on Molly's information, a member of the gang visits Drummond's farm, and is told he is in Africa.

Drummond's friend "Algy" Longworth (David Tomlinson) goes to meet the visitor.

As he arrives at the gate, he sees the man drive off having drawn a blank.

The gang plan a £500,000 robbery at an airport. The gang's van arrives at the control tower. This is the old control tower at RAF Northolt, which was in Middlesex at the time. Thanks to Jon Booty for the identification.

The gang climb up to overcome the controllers, while Drummond, Helen and Algy are held at gunpoint and the film's concluding scenes are played out within the building. RAF Northolt.
