Count Five and Die

During the Second World War, two men walk through the streets of London's Soho. Shelton Street in WC2 identified by members of the Britmovie Forum.

Peter spent ages trying to confirm that the columns in the background of the screen capture Odham's Press or The Daily Herald building before taking this shot.

Lieutenant Miller (Robert Raglan) and Sergeant Bill Parrish (Peter Prouse) enter a hotel to set up an observation post in a room opposite the offices of Arista Films, a front set up by British Intelligence.

Major Julien Howard and American agent Captain Bill Ranson relieve Miller and Parrish and watch as psychology expert Professor Mulder (David Kossoff) enters Arista's offices. Tower Court, London WC2 (RL)

Captain Ranson collects Rolande Hertog, a radio operator, and drives her from the airfield in his 1938 Triumph Dolomite. Car identified by Dave Redbourne and friends.

After a stop off for some shopping, Captain Bill Ranson (Jeffrey Hunter) and Rolande Hertog (Annemarie Düringer) arrive near the home where he lives with Major Howard.

They stop somewhere in the early part of this now redeveloped part of Carlton House Terrace, London SW1 The original terrace can be seen on Historic England website image Ref:AA065726 . . . . what a sad loss. (RL)

The OSS agent accompanies Rolande to the mews apartment. This is Carlton Mews which also features in 'The Charge of the Light Brigade', 'Obsession', 'Murder Without Crime', 'Bunny Lake is Missing' and 'Fragment of Fear'.

After Miss Hertog gets changed, she and Ranson accompany the Major as he drives Professor Mulder and his son Willem to school. Again, absorbed into the redevelopment of Carlton Mews..

The Armstrong Siddeley approaches the school in a bomb damaged street close to the Professor's home. Ray Glenister has managed to place this as Woodchester Street, Paddington, London W2. The street was actually being cleared as part of the slum clearance. The side wall visible extreme right is a playground further on from the left hand end of the school shown in captures 9 and 19. Richard Lovejoy visited what is now Rowington Close, London W2.

Moving to the right, Richard brings into view one of the remaining features of the road, the school.

Shot hampered by school gates, RL notes that the steps have been changed in the re-development.

When he gets into the car, Professor Mulder looks back as the Major drives away. Ray Glenister has established that the car is exiting Woodchester Street with the terraced houses of Cirencester Street facing and the railings of St. Mary Magdalene's Church just visible on the left.

Looking towards Lord Hills Road, Richard's comparison replaces Ray's earlier Google capture.

The group arrive at the offices of Arista Films, where plans to deceive the enemy are being made. Barry?? Wraight advises that he owns the Armstrong Siddeley 17hp "Redfern Tourer" which is undergoing a full restoration due for completion by the end of 2023 and adds that the cars history prior to 1968 has been lost apart from the evidence in this film.

Accompanied by Ranson, a taxi brings Rolande to her new flat. JT suggests that this is Delamare Terrace running alongside Regent's Canal in W2. Also seen in 'The Boys', 'Robbery' and 'Midnight Episode'.

The pair enter the building where, after the Captain leaves, two men call on Rolande. Behind the wall and beyond the canal stand buildings on Blomfield Road. Located by JT.

Roughly where the old wall leading to the old bridge was on the corner of Delamere Terrace and Lord Hills Road, W2. Turn around and there stood Bogarde's hideout in 'The Blue Lamp'. SJ

After suspicions are aroused about Rolande's identity, Ranson returns from the airfield where he had taken Piet van Wijt, an operative bound for Holland.

After he enters the Arista Films office, Ranson is told that no word has been received from Piet.

Rolande senses a change in Captain Ranson and realises that he has penetrated her cover, so travels by cab to notify her contact, Dr. Radamacher. Cecil Road in Harlesden.

The cooling towers of Acton Lane power station no longer fill the horizon. (PW)

The double agent enters the surgery where the enemy spy is posing as a dentist. Cecil Road, London NW10.

Professor Mulder waits for his son after school before finding that he hasn't been seen in classes. Ray Glensiter found that the school still exists on what is now Rowington Close which, at the time of filming, was Woodchester Street.

RL found that the school gates prevent a more accurate shot. Replacing Ray's earlier Google Earth image.

Now worried, the Professor heads from the school. Ray advises that this is by St. Mary Magdalene church on Cirencester Street next to properties on Clarendon Crescent, with buildings in Blomfield Terrace visible beyond the canal footbridge on the right.

Richard's modern view replaces Ray's capture from Google.

On the way home, a passing parent is asked if she has seen Willem. This the change of brickwork can be seen in the left background of image 11.

Regrettably there is nothing now upon which to be so precise. (RL)

Once inside his flat Mulder, receives a phone call and is asked to come to the railway yard where his son has been playing truant. Anthony Spencer identifies this as Willesden Motive Power Depot in Harlesden, London NW10 with the cooling towers of Acton Lane Power Station in the background.

Only an approximation of the location to show that there have been a few changes here. (PW)

Beside the engine shed, enemy agent Martins (Larry Burns) tells the Professor to follow him before being told that his son has been kidnapped. Anthony Spencer advises that is outside the engine shed at Willesden MPD. The shed closed in 1965 to be replaced by the present depot on the north side of the West Coast Main Line and the area is now occupied by Channel Gate Road.

There's still a railway connection. (PW)

Distraught, Mulder finds Rolande Hertog outside the office and confides in her that he told the kidnappers about the planned invasion.

Tower Court, London WC2 once again. Christopher Matheson provides the "now" shot and vows to return to take a more accurate angle. (RL)

As Mulder tells the Major about his son, an angry Rolande calls Scotland Yard when Dr. Radamacher disbelieves her contradictory information about the planned invasion. Margaret Georgoulis advises that this tunnel runs from Winchelsea Road to Baker Road in Harlesden NW10 but is now fenced off. Margaret adds that the call box was a prop as at that time the nearest phone kiosk was at Harlesden station.

The tunnel still exists but is no longer accessible. (PW)

With Rolande now exposed as an enemy agent, Scotland Yard and British Intelligence join forces to rescue the Professor's son, and their plans to deceive the enemy. Facing Acton Lane on Baker Road NW10.

Using the pretense that a bomb has been planted in the building, the police break into Dr Radamacher's surgery and free Willem. Cecil Road with now demolished buildings in the background.

Martins escapes from the surgery as Willem is rescued and Radamacher is detained, giving his name as Hauptmann Hans Faber before swallowing a lethal cyanide pill - count five, and die. The corner of Baker Road and Cecil Road in NW10 with Baker Passage running alongside the freight only railway between Cricklewood and Acton.
