Country Dance

Panning right from a Piper playing on a hillside before the titles begin, the camera picks up Hilary Dow's white Mini as she drives through a valley. Steve Randall identifies this scene as the scenic Sma' Glen in Perthshire and Kinross-shire, as viewed from the A822 at co-ordinates 56.4684722,-3.799626.

The Mini crosses a river. Just along the road from the previous capture, on the A822 at the bridge over the River Almond located by Steve Randall and Alan Bourke almost simultaneously.

Coming from the other direction, a Bentley Continental speeds past.

We take our eyes off the road as crew members' names appear over this view of a large house. Found by Steve Randall and Alan Bourke, this is Methven Castle, a 17th-century house to the east of Methven in Perthshire and Kinross-shire. The east wing was demolished in 1984.

Zooming in at this junction is accompanied by the screech of brakes. The crossroads of the B827 and the Ochtermuthill Road near Culloch in Perthshire and Kinross-shire located by Steve Randall. Turn right for Muthill.

Hilary drives into town.

The journey through the small market town continues. Willoughby Street in Muthill, Perthshire with the Old Church ahead.

Pat Cleary returned to the location soon after Disney's 'Disenchanted' set had been dismantled.

Hilary is signalled to proceed after the lorry passes. Enniskerry appears in many productions including ‘Johnny Nobody’, 'The Vengeance of Fu Manchu', ‘Flight of the Doves’, 'P.S. I Love You' and 'Leap Year'.

Driving through the market, Hilary heads towards a space and parks up before entering the auction ring.

When the sheep auction is over, Douglas Dow (Michael Craig) leaves the ring. Having consulted his uncle Gilby White, George White identifies Ashford Cattle Market in County Wicklow.

Lady Hilary Dow (Susannah York) spots her estranged husband Douglas as he meets Brigadier Crieff (Harry Andrews). George White identifies Ashford Cattle Market which closed in 2001.

The Brigadier asks "Why this one" as Douglas examines his 840 guinea investment. Gordon White advises that this is Ashford Cattle Market in County Wicklow which also appears in 'Taffin'.

A few miles away, at the story's Tarnkirk, Hilary turns towards Home Farm.

Grabbing her handbag and a box from the car, Hilary hurries past a row of pens.

Sir Charles Henry Arbuthnot Pinkerton Ferguson (Peter O'Toole) opens the box and takes out Hilary's new frock that she's bought for that evening's Conservative Party Dance. Alan Bourke's research led him to Castlekevin House, a Georgian property built in 1813.

At the Hydro Hotel, Sir Charles delivers cream left at the farm by Benny-the-Pole.

"Pink" runs from the hotel after 'goosing' the Cook. Alan Bourke believes that this is Glentower House at Glendevon in Perthshire, a Victorian shooting lodge dating from 1880 which is now a guest house.

Chased by the Cook, Pink and his sister drive away to the dance. Glentower House at Glendevon suggests Alan Bourke, who adds that the distinctive castellated tower is apparently built around a ship's mast.

After telling Sir Charles to move the Land Rover, Constable Jock Baird (Brian Blessed) asks Hilary if she's alright after stumbling.

The dancing moves outside after Tory candidate James McLachlan Forbes is introduced and heckled by a drunken Pink and his new acquaintance Miss Scott.

With the ball over, Douglas and Rosie MacIntyre (Judy Cornwell) wonder where Sir Charles and Hilary have got to.

Leaving her brother, Hilary gets a lift to town with Alex Smith and his Country Cousins. Enniskerry in County Wicklow.

Having gone home with Ina (Bernadette Gallagher) Pink is thrown out of the house by her Father (John Kelly).

As morning dawns, Douglas drives to the home of Brigadier Crieff.

Back at his farm, Pink laughs as he looks up at a tree before discovering that his sister isn't at home. Castlekevin House near Annamoe in County Wicklow identified by Alan Bourke.

Douglas drives to the hospital where he visits the Matron. The University of Stirling, Scotland, discovered by Steve Randall.

The Brigadier calls at Home Farm to collect Sir Charles for a duck shoot. Alan Bourke found Castlekevin House in County Wicklow which is currently home to actor Daniel Day-Lewis.

Impressed, Pink picks up the car's telephone handset.

With his Gillie in the back of the car, the Brigadier drives the two of them away to find Pink's Land Rover.

The Rolls Royce reaches the bridge beneath which the Brigadier had spotted Sir Charles' Land Rover earlier. Alan Bourke found Ballyward Bridge over the River Liffey near Manor Kilbride in County Wicklow.

The two men find Hilary asleep across the front seats of the Land Rover. Ballyward Bridge was rebuilt after collapsing during Hurricane Charley in August 1986.

Rosie alights from a bus close to the bridge. Not a Scottish Midland Bluebird bus, as suggested by the livery and registration, but a CIE Leyland PS2 dating from 1953 which was withdrawn from Cork depot in December 1969 and scrapped after filming. Alan Bourke identifies this as looking south across Ballyward Bridge to the south of Kilbride in County Wicklow.

Leaving the two women by the river after they help to free the car, Sir Charles drives off to meet the Brigadier and Douglas.

Overhearing that Pink has had an accident when Rosie answers the phone, Hilary runs from the house.

Hilary jumps into an old milk truck.

Worrying about her brother, Lady Dow speeds from the courtyard.

Hilary reaches the location of the shoot where she learns that Pink has injured his ear.

After nursing her brother back to health and attempting to sober him up, Hilary watches Pink fall into depression before visiting Montreal House. This is Jubilee Hall, Ballyman Road, Ballyman, Old Connaught, Dublin. (SR)

Pat Cleary explains that Jubilee Hall was built in the 1880s and finally vacated in 2008 adding that the premises are currently under security protection so, as an exact shot was not possible, this is a general view through the locked roadside entrance gates

As his belongings are being loaded into Douglas's car, Sir Charles vents his anger at Rosie when he finds Jock's scooter outside the house.

Douglas's Jaguar climbs the hill towards the County Council offices. Richard Hunter identifies the scene as outside the Council Offices, now the A. K. Bell Library, on York Road in Perth, Perthshire.

Hilary and Douglas enter the building to where the Mental Health Officer asks for her signature. The building on York Road in Perth was originally commissioned as a hospital and was converted into a library between 1992 and 1995 and named for A. K. Bell of whisky fame.
