Courtneys of Curzon Street, The

New Year's Eve 1899, outside Courtney House in London's fashionable Mayfair, home to baronet's son Edward Courtney who shocks society when he marries his mother's maid Catherine O'Halloran. Highly likely to be a studio set at Shepperton Studios, then in the county of Middlesex.

Catherine arrives on Horse Guards Parade to wave goodbye to Edward. Maybe a set, maybe a back projection, but unlikely to be Horse Guards Parade. Correct, none of those, but a brief glimpse of Hyde Park Barracks as seen from The Carriage Drive, now known as South Carriage Drive advises Dave W. (RL)

Leaving a note for Edward, Catherine returns to Ireland. Steve Randall discovered that the village is Lusk in County Dublin.

The originally thatched cottage has been converted into a local Community centre. Unfortunately, a car remained parked during Pat Cleary's visit.

Although this scene is a pan from right to left, these three captures are presented in reverse sequence to provide a better view of the location . . . which Steve Randall identifies as looking north at the junction of Main Street and Church Street in Lusk.

Pat Cleary notes that the rebuilt thatched cottage now has a front porch.

Here we end with the start of the pan. Steve Randall advises that the pump survives at the eastern end of Church Road in Lusk.

The well-kept pump remains in Pat Cleary's view, but the thatched buildings were demolished during road-widening.

The camera finds a Villager leaning from a window who begins to gossip about Catherine with her neighbour Mrs. Doolan. Lusk, County Dublin located by Steve Randall.

Pat Cleary captures a tidier property now and tells us that the house sits next to the the Community Centre seen at the start of the sequence.

Father O'Connell (James Kavanagh) makes his way to the home of Mrs. O'Halloran where Catherine is packing to return to London in the hope of gaining a job on the stage. Not, as first thought, a studio set at Shepperton, this is Lusk, to the north of Dublin City located by Pat Cleary who explains that in the background is St. Maccullin's Church standing on the site of a former monastery.

Pat adds that the unique building consists of a 9th century Round Tower, a 15th century defensive tower and a 19th century church. The monastery was plundered on numerous occasions by the Viking invaders.

Calling herself May Lynton, Catherine appears as a singer while this stock image depicts Edward Courtney's service in India.

With Catherine and Edward reunited, their son Teddy Courtney is accompanied by Mr. Valentine as they walk from school.

The two walk towards the office where Teddy meets his father for the first time.

Riding in a car with his girlfriend Cynthia Carmody, Teddy heads to his parents house before the four go out for the evening. A darkened view of Piccadilly Circus in London W1.

In a letter from home, Teddy reads that his father has retired from the Army and taken up a position in the City. This grand scene appears to be borrowed footage.

As war breaks out once again, Lady Catherine Courtney (Anna Neagle) arrives at an Army base to see her husband the Colonel.

The Fire Brigade respond to a fire at the hall where Lady Courtney has been performing for the troops.
