Walter Dodd (Ronald Fraser) and Lorenzo (Grégoire Aslan) talk in the monastery garden. Ashridge House, Ashridge near Berkhamstead in Hertfordshire which is also seen in 'Dracula: Prince of Darkness'. Whilst now a business school it was indeed, ironically, a Monastery around 1283 as pointed out by Stan Curtis. (RL)
Lionel and Cynthia Sear did their best to capture the right angle given the erection of new buildings and fences. (RL)
Phineas (Wilfrid Brambell) confronts Walter in the monastery courtyard.

The main gate of the monastery. Lionel and Cynthia Sear did not find this on their recent visit to Ashridge but with their usual determination and the invaluable co-operation and assistance of Mick Thompson, Head Gardener and Archivist, which is now fully acknowledged with thanks, it has been established that: "It was the entrance to the old wood yard. This is adjacent to Tower Cottage which is the western extremity of the building. Assuming the footprint of the building to be broadly a rectangle this is in the northwest corner. The area, which lies behind the old stable and coach house, was used as the site of the current Fairhaven building that was constructed in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s. I assume this is when the gates were removed to leave what is now an open arch. " (RL)
Mick advises that as this was a working area of the house and as a result there are not any images of the old woodyard apart from the Britain from Above aerial photograph from 1928, an extract which we show here with full acknowledgement and as required, the link to the source page. www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw021335 At least we know where to look when someone next visits.
