Cross-Roads Gallows, The (A Scotland Yard supporting feature)

Edgar Lustgarten explains that "The thief, the con-man, the pickpocket, the blackmailer, the habitual criminal of almost every description is usually known to the police. His records, his haunts, his fingerprints, the method by which he works." Peter Bywaters identifies this view as looking south along the A3 Malden Way as it passes between New Malden and Motspur Park in Surrey, a scene that also features in 'Late Night Final'.

Peter captured the scene from the pedestrian bridge over the A3 at the junction with Woodfield Gardens.

"When such a man commits a crime the police, as likely as not, have a shrewd idea of his identity. His arrest is only a matter of time, and often a short time at that. But there's one type of criminal about whom the police know nothing, because he rarely strikes more than once . . . the murderer." Advising that the footage is also taken from 'Late Night Final', James Russell spotted the background Police Call Box, identifying is as standing at Tibbet's Corner towards the north-eastern corner of Putney Heath in Putney SW19. The area has been altered drastically with the new, larger Tibbet's Corner roundabout now covering the location.

Following his research, Peter Bywaters provides this representational view at the original junction at Tibbet's Corner which connected Putney Hill with West Hill, Kingston Road, Parkside, Victoria Drive and Princes Way where the police call box once stood on the corner of Kingston Road and Parkside.

When farmer John Dent discovers the bodies of newly-weds Mr. and Mrs. James in a caravan parked illegally on his land, local Police enlist the help of Scotland Yard. The police station on Bridge Road, Godalming in Surrey.

Mr. Simmons (John Stuart), the young bride's father, accompanies Superintendent Reynolds (John Warwick) as he unlocks the caravan retrieved from Mr. Dent's land while Inspector Travers (David Lodge) and Detective Sergeant Hale (Tim Turner) look on.

After examining the caravan, Mr. Simmons tells the Officers that his daughter's engagement ring is missing along with a camera and a large sum of money.

Near the scene of the crime a pond is dragged.

Superintendent Reynolds and Detective Sergeant Hale make their way to speak with Mr. Dent after finding a patch of oil and a heavy spanner and deducing that the murderer headed towards the farm.

Meeting the Policemen at the gate, John Dent (Arthur Gomez) accompanies them to the house where he tells them that he saw a tramp in the bushes when he came across the caravan.

From a roll of film found in their car, a picture is developed of Mr. and Mrs. James taken outside The Swan at Chelham. The Wotton Hatch public house on Guildford Road at Wotton between Abinger Hammer and Dorking in Surrey.

On their way to the Swan, Superintendent Reynolds and Inspector Travers pass at old gibbet at a crossroads.

Inside the Swan, the Officers ask the Matre D' and barmaid Sally Bailey if they had seen the couple. The Wotton Hatch at the corner of Damphurst Lane and Guildford Road.

Returning to the police station, Superintendent Reynolds was becoming certain that the crime was not the work of some tramp but was carefully planned and premeditated. Looking north on Bridge Road, Godalming with the Lammas Lands to the left and the Godalming British School in the right background.

John found no sign of the police station. (Looking at Streetview it seems that there's a small fire station there. SJ)

After receiving an anonymous phone call directing them to the attic at Dent's farm, within the hour the Superintendent, his Sergeant and Inspector Travers are driven back to the property.

The three Officers make their way to the front door.

When Mrs. Dent answers his knock, Detective Sergeant Hale produces a search warrant.

Not satisfied that the Dent's insane son Billy had anything to do with the deaths after discovering him in the farm's loft, Superintendent Reynolds seeks help from the Chief Chemist at one of the big oil companies to identify the patch of oil found at the crime scene. And ReelStreets goes to Dave W to identify locations, who's analysis tell's us that this 13-14 Orchard Street, London W1. Difficult to tie it into numbers so it is the building on the corner of Orchard Street and Wigmore Street looking towards Portman Square with Edward's Mews on its south side. Needless to say, redeveloped. (RL)

Sitting in the bus shelter, Detective Sergeant Hale lowers his newspaper. The location confirmed by the name on the bus shelter opposite the Wotton Hatch on Guildford Road.

John found the shelter opposite and noted its sympathetic renovation. Replaceable for the angle should anyone wish to stand in the middle of the A25. (SJ)

Sally is followed into town. The junction of High Street and Church Street in Godalming, Surrey with the old Town Hall, known as the Pepperpot, to the left. The Pepperpot can also be seen in 'Bullet from the Past'.

John's rather off angle here but may have another go unless he's beaten to it. (SJ)

Beside his German built Tornado motorcycle, Sally embraces her boyfriend Hans. The Old House Café on Church Street, Godalming, which also appears in 'Bullet from the Past'.

David O'Donogue returned to the scene.

That evening, the Superintendent is driven to meet Detective Sergeant Hale outside Sally's lodgings.

Superintendent Reynolds and Detective Sergeant Hale are let into the house by Mrs. Willis who shows them to Sally's room where the barmaid is admiring a ring given to her by Hans.

Having said goodnight to his girlfriend, Hans Brandt rides back to the garage where he works. Outside Spencer's Garage on Watery Lane in SW19. Watery Lane also features in 'The Key Man', 'Dial 999', 'Marriage of Convenience', 'Dead Man's Chest', 'Konga' and 'Egghead's Robot'.

The new signpost is in the same place, but the garage has extended out and been converted. SJ

Turning onto the garage forecourt, the former prisoner of war parks his machine before entering the premises where Police Officers are waiting. Spencer's Garage on Watery Lane in Merton.
