From left to right Zeedijk 61 – 43. Amsterdam Circa 1972

Glimmie (Rijk de Gooyer) and his partner in crime Bonk (Jon Bluming) had some bad luck this evening, to find out that during a burglary when they cracked a safe they found that it was empty. They are on their way back home. While they are driving around in this neighbourhood some informer tells Glimmie that a rich man is looking for him. From left to right Zeedijk 61 – 43.

Zeedijk 61 – 43, Amsterdam

While Frank watched this movie again he noticed that someone says to Glimmie that someone is looking for him at the Dijk. In Amsterdam slang this means the Zeedijk. Then it was easy to locate and to take a shot from this spot.

Oudezijds Armsteeg, Amsterdam Circa 1972

The mysterious and rich man Van Borsen (Bob de Lange) meets Glimmie and Bonk in an obscure bar in the Oudezijds Armsteeg, Amsterdam and he gives them an assignment where three thousand guilders can be earned: they must find the young girl Fanny (Willeke van Ammelrooy) and bring her back to her stepfather, Van Borsen. According to Van Borsen, Fanny is a drug addict who ran away from home. Calling in the police would generate negative publicity, that could have serious consequences for his senior position.

At daytime it looks much nicer but, who on earth made the background blue and yellow?? Frank will wait for another 2 weeks or so until this horrible background will be gone.

Korte Leidsedwarsstraat Circa 1972

After a night of serious drinking Bonk and Glimmie had no idea they were followed by a strange person. Anyway when Glimmie wakes up he finds out that his stiletto knife is missing. In a bar in the Korte Leidsedwarsstraat they enquire about Fanny and they hear some stories about her and that the old man abused her. In the upper left can be seen 'Djawa', that was a famous Indonesian restaurant 'Warung Djawa'. Location: Korte Leidsedwarsstraat.

Frank really misses Warung Djawa, when he went out for a Friday or Saturday night and wanted to have some food in the middle of the night.

Glimmie believes that Van Borsen assaults Fanny and will kill her once she is tracked down, after which he and Bonk, as known small time criminals, would be charged with murder The next day, a hitman is found dead in Glimmie's home, but Inspector Van Hol aka ‘de stoere’( Frits Lambrechts) believes Glimmie has nothing to do with it. Glimmie asks his mom for advise. She owns a whore house on the Brouwersgracht, 68.

Does this look like a whorehouse in 2020???? Not really, this is in 2020 is a well settled expensive house in the center of Mokum nowadays.

Bonk has a lead to the Thorbeckeplein to find Fanny. Thorbeckeplein/Herengracht looking at the Reguliersgracht.

Instead of North State it’s called Ponte Arcari nowadays.

Thorbeckeplein. Circa 1972

Indeed Fanny is performing here and she is doing some erotic dances in a club. Bonk and Glimmie visit this club and see her dance and meet up with her to ask her about the relationship between her and her stepfather. They bring Fanny to a safe place, the whorehouse of Glimmie’s mom. Thorbeckeplein.

Back in the days this used to be a back street alley with prostitution and all, but in 2020 it is a hipster cool place to hang out…. Times change…

Fanny, Glimmie and Bonk arrive at Glimmie’s mom’s whorehouse not knowing they were followed by Inspector van Hol. Brouwersgracht 68.

No such unrest at the Brouwersgracht in 2020.

Somehow Van Borsen knows the place where Fanny stays and checks her out from the other side of the Brouwwersgracht, Amsterdam. Brouwersgracht 68 seen from the other side of the canal.

The cars in 2020 don’t look as cool as they were in the 70’s

Intersection Brouwersgracht and Herengracht Circa 1972

However there is a stranger all the way through the film who follows Fanny, Glimmie and Bonk. Who is he?? We don’t know that… Yet. Intersection Brouwersgracht and Herengracht.

Is there anything changed since the 70’s????

In front of Brouwersgracht 68 Circa 1972

Glimmie finds out that Fanny has been using drugs and there is an argument, Fanny runs away from the house straight into the arms of the mysterious stranger. They obvious know each other until……. the stranger pulls out a knife and kills Fanny with the knife he stole from Glimmie. In front of Brouwersgracht 68.

This must be the place where the beautiful Fanny was killed in the movie.

Brouwersgracht 68/70 Circa 1972

Glimmie was scared to death seeing Fanny laying on the street with his knife in her. He realises that he will be the prime suspect now so he pulls out the knife and hides it. For some reason we don’t know why the murderer of Fanny commits suicide and is out of the picture now. Brouwersgracht 68/70.

How well cared for it looks in 2020.

Inspector van Hol goes to Van Borsen’s house and tells him that his daughter was murdered that evening. Van Bosen accuses Glimmie of being the murderer. Van Hol has his doubts. Unknown location.

Scuba divers are unsuccessful in trying to find the knife. Intersection Herengracht and Brouwersgracht. The bridge can also be seen in 'Modesty Blaise' Capture 5 when it was only for pedestrians.

Nothing has changed here in the last 50 years.

Brouwersgracht and Herengracht. Circa 1972

Van Hol and his chief discuss the whole case and are far from sure that Glimmie (who got knocked out by Bonk in an argument) is the murderer. The punch from Bonk landed Glimmie into hospital, for which Bonk is sorry. In the hospital Glimmie’s mother tells her son that Van Borsen systematically abuses Fanny. Glimmie has to go to trail but was released because of a lack of evidence. Brouwersgracht and Herengracht.

Exactly the same as if it was in the 1970’s.

After his release van Hol picks up Glimmie to interrogate him, in the car they discuss things and he takes Glimmie to his house. An amusing detail is that Glimmie really does walk out of jail here. The old jail located, at Kleine Gartmansplantsoen, was in the middle of the city and has been demolished nowadays and the location is now called the Max Euweplein. Leidseplein, Amsterdam.

Always under construction in Amsterdam but this is the real center of Amsterdam, The Leidseplein in the year 2020.

The shopping continues. Outside Haarlemmerstraat 79 looking in the direction of Haarlemmerplein.

The palm trees has been replaced by people with face masks because of Covid-19.

Now they have a revolving door instead of a normal one… And some nice flowers.

Van Borsen comes home and finds out that Glimmie was in his house, he sends a hitman to him and it becomes clear that Glimmie is expecting him so that is why he is practicing with his knife. And again a sunny day in Amsterdam. On the left can be seen one of Frank’s most beloved record store called 'Concerto'. He cannot pass by and NOT visit this store… He did.
