Fatal Journey, The (A Scotland Yard supporting feature)

On a dull autumn evening, Mr. Preston arrived home on the story's Marlborough Lane in Tembridge to find his wife Norma lying unconscious on the living room floor.

The sign gives a clue that this is the south-eastern approach to London Bridge railway station in SE1 with the signal box in the background. The site of the foreground stop block and lamp was swept away during the 1970's redevelopment and re-signalling scheme.

Earlier that day, a suburban train was about to arrive at London Bridge station. Panning right brings the train sheds of London Bridge station into view with, from left to right the former LB&SCR platforms, then the South Eastern's Low Level and High Level platforms.

A Constable and a Porter (Bart Allison) escort a man, later identified as Stanley Goff (Julian Somers), from the train after he remains on board when the other passengers had alighted. London Bridge station where the prop ticket barrier indicates platform 17, but this appears to be platform 10.

While investigations continue at the Preston's house, Goff is questioned by a Detective and a Police Doctor who concludes that the man has lost his memory.

That night, at the Tembridge General Hospital, a surgeon operates on Mrs. Preston. The Nelson Hospital on Kingston Road in SW19 recognised by Richard Lovejoy. The hospital makes an appearance in several productions including ;Inside Information', 'The Silent Weapon' and 'The Dark Man'.

As Mr. Preston waits for news of his wife, in another hospital forty miles away Doctors deal with Goff's condition. Found by Richard Lovejoy, this is the entrance to the Nelson Hospital on Kingston Road, not far from Merton Park Studios.

And not far from local John H. either whose capture reveals new window frames and removal of bell. (SJ)

At Tembridge police station, every available officer is put on the Preston case. This is Chobham police station on Bagshot Road, Chobham in Surrey located by Nick Williams.

Now a private residence - no need for the flagpole. (SR)

Believing that the motive for the attack on Mrs. Preston was petty theft, men of the local constabulary are sent to question everyone in the district.

Enquiries are made about any suspicious characters that may have been seen in the area.

Following Norma Preston's death, a Young Girl recalls seeing a Gypsy (Peter Halliday) selling beads near the Preston's house. The Alma Arms public house on Alma Road in Esher, Surrey. The pub is currently styled as Marney's Village Inn.

When questioned by Chief Inspector Durrant, the Gypsy explains that he called at the Preston's house on the day of the attack.

Rather than knocking at the front door, Stevie walks to the back of the house.

Entering the property, the the Gypsy is disturbed when a man comes into the kitchen.

Chief Inspector Durrant is called to the hospital where Goff is confined. Matching up the railings that remain in place, Steve Randall locates this as facing St. Thomas' Hospital on Lambeth Palace Road SE1.

The car turns from the road to enter the hospital where the Inspector confronts Goff about Mrs. Preston. Steve Randall identifies the gates of St. Thomas' Hospital on Lambeth Palace Road.

A rather untidy scene which may not be the exact place but has the same architecture behind the works. SJ

In an effort to discover the man that Stevie saw at the house, Inspector Durrant (Gordon Bell) conducts an identity parade in which Mr. Preston (Jack Melford) and Goff take part.

After the parade, Goff is kept under police observation. Hare Lane, Claygate in Surrey with The Old Bank in the background at number 109 on the corner of Torrington Close located by Richard Lovejoy.

Short of money, Goff leaves the hostel where he has spent the night.

Emerging onto the street, Goff imagines that he can lose himself among London's millions. The Salvation Army Hostel at the corner of Great Peter Street and St. Ann's Street in SW1.

Expecting Goff to give himself away, Inspector Durrant receives a report that the suspect is just sitting on a bench beside the Thames. Victoria Tower Gardens in SW1 with a scaffolding clad Victoria Tower to the left and Westminster Bridge crossing the River Thames in the right distance.

The Buxton memorial was moved from Parliament Square in 1957 and so is absent in the original but visilble here. And the seat arrangement are now in front of the treeline facing the river. SJ

A Detective watches as Goff gets up fro the bench and walks away with purpose. Victoria Tower Gardens with Westminster House to the corner of Dean Stanley Street and Millbank to the left.

While the Victoria Tower is now free from scaffolding, there is some shrouding (for the second time in 10 years) on Westminster House, Millbank. SJ

Goff is followed closely.

Waiting for a cyclist to pass, the Detective follows Goff across a road.

Near Victoria station, Goff enters a lost property office. Outside 7 Belgrave Road in SW1.

Remarkably, this pair of buildings survive. (PW)

The Detective waits outside as Goff collects a suitcase. Facing number 8 Belgrave Road which, like its neighbour, still stands.

Obviously there's more money to be made by selling luggage and souvenirs than in building and decorating. (PW)

As he leaves the premises, Goff is tackled by the Detective. Looking towards the junction of Belgrave Road and Hugh Street with St. George's Tavern to the right.

No scuffles to be seen at the moment. (PW)

At the police station, Goff tells Inspector Durant about events on the day of the attack.

Goff recounts how he caught a train from Tembridge. Claygate railway station at the end of The Parade in Claygate near Esher, Surrey.

John provides evidence that the station remains very recognisable. (SJ)

Having placed any incriminating items in his suitcase, Goff leaves it on a platform at the next station before getting back onto the train bound for London Bridge.
