Seán Mallory recalls a time with his girlfriend Coleen (Vivienne Chandler) back in Ireland whilst out motoring with his best friend Nolan (David Warbeck). Pat Cleary identifies the grounds of Howth Castle in County Dunlin, Ireland.

Back to to the Tabernas area, and the army is on the move.

Not sure exactly where this is but it's a good match from DL: there's the bridge, or remains, in the middle.

Steiger allows himself a smile to Coburn as they attack the army as it crosses the bridge. DL points out that the distinctive hill in the background matches The Good the Bad and the Ugly (20, 21) and For a Few Dollars More (28). (SJ)

And Manuel Gurtner draws our attention to the fact that some of this film was shot in Italy as well. The San Isidro massacre was allegedly shot in the Grotte di Palazzolo above Lake Albano, located in the territory of the municipality of Albano Laziale, about 25 km south-east of Rome.

This location is supported by the fact that Antonio Margheriti, who was then part of the special effects team, ten years later as director of "The Hunters of the Golden Cobra" shot the showdown in the Palazzolo cave. But as early as 1966, the grotto was used as filming location for the Giallo "Murder Clinic".

After a bloody battle, Seán remembers the moment when the Police and the Army Officers dragged his injured friend Nolan into a bar to arrest Nationalists. This is the inside of Toner's Pub at the corner of Baggot Street Lower and Roger's Lane in Dublin 2.

The last train from Mesa Verde on its way to America. Actually the broad gauge train passes a steel girder bridge, called Puente del Grado, located between Hernán Valle and Guadix. The section between Baza and Guadix as part of the Ferrocarril del Almanzora was completed by The Granada Railway Company Limited in 1907.

Despite an emergency stop, the train collides with a lorry that suddenly rolls onto the track. Shot at Gor station on the Almanzora railway, since 1985 disused between Guadix and Almendricos and subsequently dismantled. The RENFE tender loco No 140-2022, withdrawn in 1967, can be recognised, which was already used in Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West". The former ANDALUCES engine No. 219, originally built in 1865 (!) by Parent, Schaken, Caillet & Cie with 0-8-0 wheel arrangement, was converted into a Consolidation 2-8-0 type before the First World War. More impeccable research by Manuel.

The military train, derailed and destroyed in the head-on collision (made with scale models), is attacked by the insurgents. Originally built by The Alquife Mines and Railway Co. Ltd. and operated until the end of the 1960s, the broad gauge branch line from La Calahorra station through the Marquesado plains to Alquife was used for the truly infernal showdown. During the final battle the low walls of the Acequia de Aldeire as part of the local irrigation system can be recognised. Manuel.
