General, The (1998)

Martin Cahill (Brenda Gleeson) opens the door of his Renault 5, getting into the driving seat before a Gunman runs up and shoots him three times.

After the car rolls along the road, a Motorcyclist rides up to collect the Assassin (David Wilmot) as he looks through the smashed side window at Cahill's lifeless body.

Frances Cahill (Maria Doyle Kennedy) shouts at a Garda as he checks her husband's corpse before the story of Martin's life is told.

Pursued by Gardaí, a young Martin Cahill (Eamonn Owens) and his Pals run through Dublin alleyways with stolen vegetables.

After serving his sentence, Martin Cahill (Brendan Gleeson) is released.

Martin makes his way back to his family who are in the process of being evicted from Hollyfield Buildings. Sheriff Street flats on Sheriff Street Lower in North Wall, Dublin 1 identified in World Film Locations: Dublin edited by Jez Conolly, Caroline Whelan (ISBN 978-1-84150-550-3).

Sergeant Ned Kenny (Jon Voight) tells Martin and his Family that it'll be nice to get out of this sewage and filth. Sheriff Street corporation flats were located between Sheriff Street Lower and Mayor Street Lower.

The demolition of the tenement blocks begins around Martin who refuses to leave his home. Sheriff Street flats consisted of St. Laurence's Mansions, St. Bridget's Gardens and Phil Shanahan House.

As can be seen, the demolition of Sheriff Street flats, which had started in the 80s, was continuing at the time of filming.

Moving into a caravan on the site of his flat, Martin is visited by Officials who fail in their attempt to persuade him to leave. The background building crossing the top of the capture stand on Harbourmaster Place beyond Commons Street

Returning home one evening, Martin finds his caravan ablaze. The area is now occupied by the Crinan Strand, Mariners Port and Spencer Dock development.

Waking from a tent pitched next to the burnt out caravan, Martin opens the flap to see the Chairman of the Housing Committee. Facing west on the site of Sheriff Street flats in North Wall 1.

Martin walks from The Celtic Bank after drawing a banker's draft for £80,000 against a cash deposit.

Crossing the road, the crook signals to two helmeted Men.

Martin enters the Garda Station to ask for Sergeant Kenny as the two Men walk into the bank and take the £80,000 cash at gunpoint.

A siren sounds behind the two and Martin turns to see a Garda motorcyclist following. Facing west on Old Abbey Street with the junction of Marlborough Street and Harbour Court in the distance.

Leaving the motorcycle in the road, Noel and Martin discard their helmets as they leg it along an alleyway. This alley leads north from Gordon Street between the backs of properties on Somerset Street and South Lotts Road.

The Gardaí pull up at the other end of the alley before taking the two robbers into custody. The alley ends on Doris Street.

On the morning of Martin and Noel's appearance in court, Dr. James Donovan (Ronan Wilmot) leaves home.

The forensic scientist gets into his car to make his way to court before a bomb explodes when he turns the key.

Sitting in their car across the street, Martin and Noel survey the workshops of Thomas O'Connor and Sons, a wholesale jewellers in Harold Cross.

Martin watches from over the road as members of the Press outside court gather around when the now recovered Dr. Donovan arrives. Opposite the Four Courts on Inns Quay in Dublin. After shooting out the street light on the road outside O'Connor's wholesale jewellers earlier, Cahill's Men arrive with a cherry-picker overnight. The warehouse stands on a since redeveloped Cardiff Lane, Dublin 2 advises Tony Hanna.

The following morning, the Security Guard (Tony Flynn) lets Mr. Smidtz into the jeweller's yard. Inside the warehouse yard on Cardiff Lane.

Coming out of their hiding place, two of Cahill's Men run into the yard and take the Guard and the Manager captive. Inside the yard of the since demolished warehouse on Cardiff Lane.

When Workers begin to arrive Jimmy begins to explain that there's a problem with the alarm. Cardiff Lane located by Tony Hanna.

With the robbery over, the gang's Volkswagen van speeds from the yard, scattering the Employees. Looking south along Macken Street identified by Tony Hanna, a reverse view from Cardiff Street.

Followed by Martin in a stolen Ford Granada, the van drives onto waste ground where the thieves change clothes.

The van full of loot approaches Willie Byrne (Tom Murphy) as he waits to open the door of Martin's lock-up.

In Martin's back garden, ways of getting the gold to a fence in London are discussed with Jimmy.

Heading for Milton Keynes in England, Jimmy arrives at the ferry terminal with his truck load of pigeons . . . and concealed gold. This is Dún Laoghaire Ferry Terminal which saw the last ferry depart in 2015.

Pat Cleary found that there's not much left to see in this once busy ferry terminal.

Incurring the displeasure of the I.R.A., Martin and Noel make their way to a meeting with two Representatives. The steps of 14 St. Stephens Green, next to the Little Dublin Museum, found by Pat Cleary.

Pat ventured out one Sunday morning to capture this sequence of three shots at a usually extremely busy junction with trams, buses, cars, taxis, vans, pedestrians and even decked out horse drawn tourist carts constantly on the move and getting in the way.

Martin comments that the I.R.A. are amateurs as they cross the road towards two Men. Pat Cleary identifies this as the junction of Dawson Street and St. Stephens Green North in Dublin 2 adding that the tall building in the right background was the much maligned Hawkins House. In 1965, controversially, the Rank Organisation was granted planning permission to build the office block resulting in the demolition of Dublin's legendary Theatre Royal. Architecturally and publicly it was deemed a massive eyesore. Pat worked in the building for twenty years and tells us that, prior to demolition, next door to the Theatre Royal was the Regal Cinema where one of his uncles worked as a projectionist.

As can be seen in Pat's comparison, the Green Line of the LUAS tram system now runs along Dawson Street and Hawkins House is in the process of being demolished.

Noel parks his bike before finding Martin in the queue to tell him that the IRA have beaten up Gary for pushing drugs. Outside the Liberties College on Bull Alley Street, opposite St. Patrick's Park.

Organised by Martin, a rival group of more intimidating protestors approaches from a different direction. Gordon Street, looking towards Barrow Street and the since demolished silos of Boland's Mill in the right distance.

After Martin and his men trigger the alarms before hiding in the grounds, Gardaí arrive at Russborough House. A currently unknown location.

Believing the call out to be a false alarm, the Gardaí depart and the gang re-enter the building to remove several paintings.

With the artworks secreted in Martin's hiding place, Noel drops him off at the Garda Station to create an alibi.

Journalists cross the road towards him when they see Martin arrive at the Dole Office escorted by two Gardaí. Facing Liberties College on Bull Alley Street.

When he drives into the countryside with Noel, Gardaí continue to follow Martin . . . . until they run out of petrol.

Arriving to play a round of golf the morning after taunting Martin, Police Sergeant Patrick Higgins (Pat Laffan) finds that the course has been wrecked. Anyone, like Pat Cleary in their younger days, who was a regular player at the magnificent Glencullen Pitch and Putt course high in the Dublin Mountains and close to the Wicklow border would recognise this spectacular view including the Two Sugar Loaf Mountains.

Under the watchful eye of several Gardaí, Martin follows his pregnant sister-in-law Tina (Angeline Ball) and his wife Frances down the steps at the front of their flat.

Fights break out between Neighbours and the Gardaí.

Nick helps the women get into his car as Martin climbs into the driving seat for the journey to hospital.

When Martin applies the brakes, the Garda Síochána's vehicle runs into the back of his Renault. Looking north-west on Merrion Row towards St. Stephen's Green in Dublin 2.

Gang members arrive at Martin's house to see the new Baby, each with their own Gardaí escort.

Martin visits Mrs. Duggan to offer her grand-daughter Maeve a house and protection from Gary. This is the rear of properties on Somerset Street in South Lotts 4.

While Gardaí sit having tea with a neighbour Mrs. Harney, Sergeant Higgins taunts Martin when he arrives home through the back garden.

Called to the window by his wife one morning, Martin looks out to find that the Gardaí have gone.
