Grimsby

A street. Were these houses demolished or were they refurbished? These boarded-up terraces have a look of Liverpool's Welsh Streets, though I haven't found an exact match yet. Does the graffiti hold a clue?

Another view. The same street? It's difficult to be sure, but it looks as though the houses on the opposite side may already have been cleared. This is Bagnall Street in Anfield, Liverpool, looking northeast towards the backs of houses in Rockfield Road. All the houses in Bagnall Street were cleared sometime between July 2014 and July 2015.

Nobby Butcher (Sacha Baron-Cohen) has just bought a new mattress.

More locals. This doesn't seem to be in Tilbury, and it isn't. It's Back Rockfield Road, Anfield, Liverpool, looking northwest, away from the Anfield stadium. That partly obscured street sign on the left is at the end of Pulford Street, and at the far end of the road on the left we can see the roof of the King Harry pub in Blessington Road.

Finally, we arrive at Nobby's house. Adelaide Road. I missed this one, but capture 52 is the same place.

What it says. A view east along the Thames, with the City and Docklands to the left, and the Shard prominent on the right.

A distinctive building, but where? The multi-storey car park in Welbeck Street, Marylebone, W1.

Too late! Attempts to have the brutalist concrete structure listed were not successful, and it's being demolished. The facade was still visible on 10th May 2019, but by the time I visited on 20th the whole building was wrapped in plastic, never again to emerge. A hotel is planned for the site.

Via the high-tech video link in a contact lens, we see what MI6 agent Sebastian Graves (Mark Strong) sees as he rides a zipwire from the window of a flat. Just to throw us off the scent, the view is distorted by his lens and also reversed from left to right, but this is Durban, South Africa. On the left is Bertha Nkhize Street, with Joseph Nduli Street passing under the raised walkway near the centre of the shot and the national route N3, appearing much more curved than it really is, in the top right corner.

He spots the target, Maelstrom agent Jordan Beder (David James), on the steps under the N3.

Beder runs from the scene.

He commandeers a motorbike and makes off through the crowds. This is the Warwick Junction Herb Market in Durban, on a stretch of motorway overpass that was abandoned before it was completed.

Beder is picked up by associates, and the chase continues into a nearby township. Kayalitsha, Cape Town, a view southeast from a position above Lindela Road, about 270 yards south of the bridge over Ntlazane Street.

Back in Grimsby, Nobby and his mates are in the pub watching the footy. IMDB identifies the Army and Navy in New Barn Street, Plaistow, E13.

The Army and Navy closed in 2016 after a brawl in which a man was fatally stabbed, and Newham council have subsequently approved a plan for redevelopment. Boarded up, the pub awaits demolition.

Nobby's mates have found his long-lost brother and tipped him off. He arrives at a high-profile charity function.

The ticket says Somerset House, but this is King William Court in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich SE10.

The great and the good arrive for the event. The college is also seen in 'Darkest Hour', 'Les Misérables', 'The Wings of the Dove’, ‘Four in the Morning’, ‘Octopussy’ and 'Four in the Morning' amongst many.

No crowds today though.

It's all gone horribly wrong. Sebastian is now himself a target for MI6 hit-man Chilcott, and he and Nobby are on the run. The roof of the King's Building of King's College in Strand Lane, WC2.

Nobby and Sebastian flee across the rooftops. Kings College, with the dome of Somerset House, the London Eye and the Palace of Westminster in view.

On top of everything else, a traffic warden (Peter Baynham) is just writing out a ticket for Sebastian's car. Strand Lane appears in 'Crime of Honour' along with Surrey Steps for 'Their Finest' and 'The Key Man'.

Nobby has a cunning plan for hiding Sebastian. They head north. The cooling towers of Drax power station in North Yorkshire, approached from the south on the A645.

He'll hide his brother in Grimsby.

He remembers another train journey, years earlier.

North Weald station on the Epping Ongar Railway in Essex.

A diesel-hauled train pulls away from North Weald station. This is the Class 31 locomotive number 31438 built in 1959.

No trains were running on the day I visited, but a group carrying out maintenance kindly allowed me to roam the station and take pictures, for which many thanks.

A guaranteed safe hiding place. The rear of what was once The Ship on the corner of Calcutta Road and Broadway, and visible also in capture 50.

A ground-level view. The Ship closed as a pub in the early 1980s and subsequently the building housed a post office and other retail units. The ground floor units are all boarded up now.

At the Trawler, Sebastian's secret is being carefully guarded.

Not surprisingly, the squad assigned to eliminate Sebastian has tracked him down. At the base of Stubbs Tower, New Barn Road, E13, an armed agent moves into position.

Nobby and Sebastian make good their escape from the pub. This doesn't seem to be Plaistow; the bins bear the phone number for Chiswick's recycling service.

After some interior action, the duo arrive in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

A motorcycle swings through bends on the coast road. This is somewhere on Clarence Drive, between Rooi-Els and Gordon's Bay in Western Cape, South Africa.

Flashback. We see the brothers on the pitch at a Grimsby Town match. I thought this might be Grimsby town's home turf, but Andrew Kelly has been there many times and confirms that it's not. Andrew identified Roots Hall, the home of Southend United, with the cranes and the Grimsby Dock Tower added in the background.

The two are hiding out in 'Harare Township' whilst Sebastian tracks down the assassin, now identified as Pavel Lukaschenko.

He learns of a contact at 'Tshukaru Bush Lodge'.

After escaping another attempt by Chilcott to eliminate the brothers, Sebastian is again remembering the event that separated the two as boys. North Weald station on the Epping Ongar Railway in Essex.

The plot takes them to Santiago, Chile, for the World Cup final between England and Germany. The statue of the Virgin Mary on San Cristobal Hill, with a view east over Santiago beyond.

The football stadium is in Cape Town, though. This composite shot shows the Cape Town Stadium and the mountains behind viewed, probably, from Green Point Park. The foreground is a view northeast along Chiappini Street from Waal Street in Schotse Kloof, Cape Town.

Nobby and Sebastian are disguised as football fans and blend into the crowd -- until Nobby's mates spot them. Chiappini Street, looking southwest to Waal Street.

As Nobby's mates gather round, Sebastian begins to feel conspicuous. 126 Chiappini Street.

Indeed, they have been spotted. As Sebastian makes a run for it, he is intercepted by two black Range Rovers and a fight ensues. The corner of Dorp Street and Pentz Street, Schotse Kloof.

A short while afterwards, Nobby spots the two cars in a courtyard.

He slips into what turns out to be a spa. Believing it to be something more sinister, he chases the clients into the street.

Meanwhile, Sebastian is being held here. The crayfish processing factory on Die Eiland, Witsands, Scarborough, South Africa.

For Nobby, the trail seems to have gone cold. The corner of Dorp Street and Pentz Street.

Nobby has remembered that he accidentally implanted a tracker into Sebastian's neck; he arrives at the Maelstrom compound.

Entering the compound, he comes face to face with Lukashenko.

The brothers have discovered the nature of the plot and escaped from the compound. They race to the stadium. Cape Town Stadium.

They are beginning to feel that the situation is hopeless. Then, on the stadium's large screen, they notice that Rhonda George has just arrived.

Everything turned out OK in the end, and the two are on a new mission in Jakarta. A very dark shot, but the large ship in the background appears to be a Glovis vehicle carrier -- entirely consistent with this being Tilbury.

Andrew Abbott was an extra in this film, and sent us this supplementary shot of the interior of what was then the Gala Bar, more recently the ASK Lounge, in Heather Park Drive in Wembley, during filming. That pub represented the interiors of both the pubs -- the Army and Navy in Plaistow and the former Ship in Tilbury -- that were featured in exterior shots.
