Happy Go Lovely

"Edinburgh. The Royal burgh. Capital of Scotland." Edinburgh Castle, likely to be taken from the upper floor of a building on Lothian Road. The sequence is reused ten years later in 'Don't Bother to Knock'.

"Whose ancient castle stands guard over its historical city of commerce and tradition." Panning left the camera finds Princess Street in Edinburgh 1 with the North British Hotel beyond the Scott Monument and St. Cuthbert's church in the right foreground.

"Once a year travellers from the four corners of the world come to watch, and thrill at the impressive opening of the Edinburgh Festival . . ." Princes Street with the Scott Monument to the left.

". . . which is dedicated to the highest and purest ideals in art." But occasionally, something like the revue 'Frolics to You' slips in! Sneaking out of Mrs. Urquhart's lodging house to avoid a Creditor, chorus girl Janet Jones (Vera-Ellen) thumbs a lift from B. G. Bruno's chauffeur Bates (Hugh Dempster).

Janet explains to Bates that she's running late and needs to be at the Mercury Theatre in 15 minutes. Facing eastward on Great King Street, Edinburgh 3 confirmed by Kirsty Nicol.

On the journey towards the theatre, the Austin Sheerline is held up by a band of Bagpipers. Looking east on The Mound with the Black Watch monument to the centre and the Bank of Scotland top right behind the trees.

With no alternative, the limousine follows the band. The junction of The Mound, Market Street and North Bank Street with North Bridge in the centre distance.

After rumours begin about Janet dating B. G. Bruno, a van pulls up outside the millionaire's office. Graham Thomas identifies this as Chelsea Bridge Road in London SW1 with the Lister Institute on the right and the Peabody Trust's Chelsea Gardens and Wellington Buildings to the left.

Getting out of the van, a Messenger enters Bruno House. Outside the Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine recognised by Graham Thomas.

A bus stop prevents a straighter angle. The entrance has now become a window. SJ

Inside the businessman's office, an invoice from Amanda Coutures for almost £2000 accompanied by a single flower is delivered to Mr. Bruno. The Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine, now the Lister Hospital, on Chelsea Bridge Road in SW1 located by Graham Thomas.

After she mistakes him for a Reporter, B. G. Bruno (David Niven) invites Janet to lunch and asks about her wealthy suitor. A back projected view of Edinburgh street serves as the backdrop.

Through the window of the café, Janet spots Bates draw up outside the Mercury Theatre and makes her excuses to leave.
