Haunters of the Deep (Children’s Film Foundation)

During the school holidays, Josh Holman (Gary Simmons) cycles along the Cornish coast near the village where he lives.

Lionel and Cynthia Sear dug deep into Cornwall mining country to bring us a rich lode from their visit. This is part of the tin dressing floors at Botallack. The main tin ore of commerce is cassiterite, tin dioxide, which is very heavy and various devices exploited this fact to separate the tin from the lighter waste. In the shot they have convex and concave buddles. (RL)

Having travelled 3000 miles from the USA to Cornwall, Doug Roche, president of the Aminco Mining Corporation, heads towards an old tin mine with his daughter Becky. The B3318, North Road to the south-east of Pendeen, Cornwall with buildings of the derelict East Boscaswell Mine in the background.

Mr. Roche steers the Opel Rekord along ever narrowing roads.

The Americans arrive at the Strangleshead mine where a new seam has been discovered. This is the Levant Mine near Trewellard in Cornwall, a location that features in 'The Mine and the Minotaur' and 1944's 'Love Story'.

Mr. Roche (Bob Sherman) is met by Dave Shannon (Sean Arnold). The since restored Levant Mine at Trewellard is now owned by the National Trust.

Josh cycles closer to investigate the new arrivals. Levant Mine was a tin and copper mine worked for over 200 years until closure in 1930.

On vacation with her father, Becky Roche (Amy Taylor) turns when Josh approaches. In the right background stands the calciner chimney at Levant.

As for capture 5, say Lionel and Cynthia, but a little further east. (RL)

Having spotted his Dad and brother out at sea, Josh rides into the village to meet them. Portloe in Cornwall.

Lionel and Cynthia Sear relish all that this film provides them for some "local opportunities" and start with this capture leading out of the village. The house having gained a figure head! (RL)

Josh arrives near the harbour. This short road in Portloe is sometimes referred to as Beach Hill. Views of Portloe also appear in 'Crooks in Cloisters', 'About Time' and 'Mystery in the Mine'.

Not to be beaten Lionel and Cynthia returned to Portloe to cover the less obvious captures. Here, dropping down into the harbour there have been major changes due to upgrades at the Lugger Hotel but those steps that Francesca Annis walked down in 'Crooks in Cloisters' gave it away to our couple of sleuths. Mr. Holman (Brian Osborne) and his son Daniel bring their small fishing boat ashore as Josh runs down the slipway to the water’s edge. Portloe Cove in Veryan Bay.

Virtually nothing has changed here as Lionel and Cynthia look out to sea. (RL)

As the brothers head away from the harbour, Daniel Holman (Peter Lovstrom) tells Josh that he’s got a new job at the mine and starts work the next day.

Tempted back to the Ship Inn Lionel and Cynthia found this property off the road to the south some 50 metres down. The clearly new bridge, they say, probably stemmed from the major floods of 2010. (RL)

Borrowing his brother’s bike, Daniel calls back to Josh as he rides away. Facing east on the road from Sunny Corner towards the centre of Portloe.

Mr. Roche and Becky arrive at the Porthellen Hotel. In reality, the Royal Berkshire Hotel on London Road at Sunninghill in Ascot, Berkshire found by Steve Randall.

As Josh walks along the coastline near to the mine, an eerie mist appears. The Crowns Engine Houses at Botallack located by Lionel and Cynthia Seer, a location that can also be seen in ‘Doctor Blood's Coffin’ and 'City Under the Sea'.

Possibly the most photographed of all Cornish Mining scenes, Lionel and Cynthia have added to the tally with a clearer shot. (RL)

Through the mist, Josh sees a young Boy (Philip Martin) dressed in old fashioned clothes.

Below the Count House at Botallack, this is close to where haude014 was taken. Ever the perfectionists, Lionel and Cynthia wished that they had taken some dry ice to create the same effect. This is an old working, they add, that penetrates a little way but strongly recommend......"do not be tempted!" (RL)

As the mist continues to rise, Josh finds himself in the churchyard close to the grave of Billy Bray. Holy Trinity Church on Lyne Lane in Lyne near Chertsey, Surrey. Lionel and Cynthia advise that the ghost of Billy Bray that features in this film was a noted Cornish miner and evangelist. His actual grave (and monument) is at the deconsecrated church at Baldhu that is about five miles south west of Truro. (RL)

Finding his brother and jogging alongside him, Josh tells Daniel about the mist and the boy. Levant Road running between Trewellard and Levant Mine.

Still listening to music through his headphones, Daniel rides away having heard nothing of what Josh has said. Levant Road, Trewellard.

That night, Josh dreams about the boy in the mist. Looking down onto the village of Portloe in Cornwall.

The next morning, Josh asks his Dad if he's ever seen a ghost. Looking down onto properties above Portloe Harbour.

The two make their way into the village.

At the mine, Mr. Roche is taken to see the vein of tin by Frank Lacey accompanied by Daniel. Levant Mine on the Atlantic Coast of Cornwall.

Here Lionel and Cynthia are looking down on the complex from a point just below the car park. They provide us with a full description as well. "The structure just showing in the foreground on the right is the old gunpowder store. The large building in the centre left houses a beam engine and the building in front, erected since the film was made, contains a modern steam boiler to power the beam engine which runs during the summer months. The pond on the far left at centre provides cooling water for the beam engine condenser." (RL)

As Josh talks about smugglers and pirates Becky sees an old man walking on top of the cliff. Overlooking Portloe Cove.

Lionel and Cynthia Sear were at last able to address this long outstanding capture, only to find that with the passage of some 40+ years, it is now difficault to identify the exact location and would be impossible to access. They nevertheless found the appropriate angle. (RL)

Captain George Tregellis (Andrew Keir) makes his way home from the village. The pathway on the slopes above Portloe.

The old man surprises Josh and Becky as they follow him in the hope of seeing his collection of ores and semi-precious stones.

Further south along the path seen in haude025 Lionel and Cynthia found that this is where the path ends with a sheer drop to their left. (RL)

After leaving the Captain, the pair go to a disused engine house where Josh hears the tapping sound coming up through the old mine shafts. This is the ruined Higher Levant Mine on Levant Road near Trewellard.

The two children run back to the Captain’s house where Josh recalls seeing an old photograph of the boy from the mist.

Captain Tregellis tells the youngsters that Billy Bray was his friend who was killed in the mine, and that the tapping sound is a foretelling of disaster.

The children run to the mine where they find Trevor Dobson (Barry Craine) and his Colleague from the Rescue Service already at work after Mr. Roche, Daniel and Frank Lacey become trapped underground. The Levant Mine on Levant Road from Trewellard.

Since filming, Lionel and Cynthia tell us that the building now serves as the National Trust Visitor Centre and Shop. (RL)

Captain Tregellis leads Josh and Becky to another entrance into the mine. On the cliff in the distance stands the remains of Crowne Mine at Botallack, a short distance along the South West Coast Path from Levant Mine.
