Hellfire Club, The

A view of Netherden Hall in the year 1752 opens the film as a caption explains “With a weak King George II on the throne the powerful noblemen, a law unto themselves, banded together inn private clubs and societies, the most notorious of these being the Hellfire Club. Its orgies, vices and intrigues shook the nation, for its members were not merely a band of rakes and bloods but the most influential men in the British Government.” In reality, the hall is Moor Park near Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire.

Lady Netherden and her son Jason flee from their home in a coach driven by manservant Timothy after the youngster and his cousin Thomas stumble upon the caves where The Hellfire Club meet. Moor Park also appears in 'A Business Affair', 'Metro-Land', ‘The Vampire Lovers’, 'Jassy' and ‘Brothers in Law’.

Discovering that his wife and son are heading for London, Lord Netherden and his confederates follow them.

Timothy urges the horses onward across the top of a ridge until a damaged shaft bolt fails, sending the coach careering off the road as he jumps to safety with Jason in his arms.

Returning from working with a travelling fair in Holland after receiving word that his father has died, Jason arrives in England where a view of London precedes the heir's visit to seek advice from lawyer Merryweather. What a lovely model.

Jason rides into the village near Netherden Hall on his way to claim the title of 5th Earl that his cousin has assumed. Abbot Road, Little Missenden in Buckinghamshire with St. John the Baptist church to the left of centre.

After saving Thomas's wife Isabel from footpads, Jason is invited to Netherden Hall. Moor Park near Rickmansworth.

Escaping from the hall, Jason reaches the Netherden Arms where he finds Timothy and Yvonne who have travelled with the fair from Holland. Facing Manor Farm at the junction of Beamond End Lane and Abbot Road in Little Missenden.

Pursuing his cousin to the village, Thomas (Peter Arne) arrives in time to see Jason riding away into the distance. Along with this junction, other views of Little Missenden can be seen in ‘Nurse on Wheels’ as well as ‘The Iron Maiden’.

After being apprehended by Thomas and his Men before being arrested and sentenced to be hanged, Jason is taken to Newgate Prison. This is the Barn Wing of the stables at Osterley Park. (SR)
