It's Thursday, around lunchtime, and Arthur Dent has just woken up. The house stands on the lane to Mutfords off the B1368 south of Hare Street near Buntingford, Hertfordshire.

As the demolition gang proceed to tear down Arthur's house and an alien fleet arrives above Earth, Ford runs after his friend. The Beehive pub in Hare Street.
Peter found that the pub is still open but the road outside is at a very busy T junction.
