One Saturday lunchtime, a whistle blows, signalling the end of another shift at the gasworks. Borehamwood Gasworks on Station Road, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. The gasometer and water tank also feature in 'Mutiny on the Buses'.

Workers leave the plant as Ted Groves makes his way to the gate moaning to a colleague about a younger workmate who thinks atomic energy will make gas redundant.

At the Central Garage, mechanics Sid Jarvis and his pal Johnnie Knowles are finishing work for the day. This appears to be the Central Garage that stood at 75 Shenley Road in Borehamwood.

The morning after he discovers that their pools coupon is a winner, Johnnie Knowles (Bernard Fox) calls on his mate Sid to find the house empty. Clarendon Road at the corner of the access road to the Television Studios, opposite Essex Road.

Antony Blair returned to the same corner 67 years later.

At a petrol station, Mary Knowles (Lana Morris) tells her boyfriend Al Chuckleburger (Ross Pendleton) that her father doesn't get on with Sid because Mrs. Jarvis is a loose woman. Following his research, Anthony McKay reveals that the petrol station is just a pump on the National Studios backlot which is confirmed by the background buildings on Grosvenor Road and Shenley Road, Elstree.

Imprisoned by his ne'er-do-well Mother in the hope of pocketing his half of the pools winnings, Sid escapes through a skylight of his Aunt and Uncle's house. Anthony McKay identifies this as Rowley Lane in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.
