Screen captures and uncredited “now” shots by Frank van den Berg uploaded by Richard Lovejoy.

Veronica Television broadcast an open casting call to find a young girl to play Honneponnetje from Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam. Nada van Nie won the part even though she did not audition at that time. Original male lead Kenneth Herdigein hurt his knees jumping of a ladder for a scene and had to be replaced at the last minute by Marc Hazewinkel. The character of filmmaker Apollo Romansky is a thinly veiled reference to Roman Polanski.

John Frostbrug bridge in Arnhem Circa 1974

Because of her terrible driving style, she is pulled over by two motorcycle cops. After causing an accident with one of the motors one of the police officers Herman (Bert Kuizinga) is totally in love with her and offers her a ride on his motor cycle to the big city. The other police officer George (Con Meyer) is furious. We thought, briefly, that this was the John Frost Bridge in Arnhem, but careful scrutiny of the arch structure and the street lights, in particular, confirms that it isn't. This is the Prinses Irene Brigade Bridge, formerly known as the Hedelsebrug, over the Maas between Den Bosch, Brabant, and Hedel, Gelderland in the Netherlands. The bridge was built in 1937, but blown up by the Dutch army in 1940 to hinder the German advance. Reinstated by the occupying power, it reopened in 1942, but was again blown up, this time by the retreating Germans, in 1944, and finally reconstructed after the war. (PB)

The Hague. Circa 1988

After a crazy ride he drops Honneponnetje off in the big city. This is The Hague and Frank could tell that because of the tram on the background. That is how they looked back in the 80’s in that city. The Hague. Phil B adds that the building behind the tram is the Mercure Hotel at the corner of Spui and Schedeldoekshaven. There has been much redevelopment here, and the hotel is one of the few buildings still recognisable from 1988.

Now this was an easy one for Frank. When he was looking for the now spots when he was working on the film 'Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo' it took him a while to find this location and now it is used in 'Honneponnetje'. Capture 51, 52 and 67 from 'Deuce Bigolow: European Gigolo' also shows this location.

Finally of all these years of garbage on the streets of Amsterdam the garbage service did clean up the mess. We thank this local public service for that.

And as usual Amsterdam is…..under construction. Why do they often have to block his view when he wants to take the ‘perfect spot photo’ is what Frank often thinks. It appears to be a pre-requisite of comparative shots for Reelstreets that there has to be wire barriers, scaffolding or white vans in the exact field of view.
