Slightly off-angle, taken from the Via del Velabro, west of the Foro Romano. The Arco di Giano, misnamed as it is thought to be dedicated to Constantine rather than the god Janus, dominates. SJ

Rome? Grant's enterprise. Yes Roma, the EUR building put up during Mussolini's reign in the 30's, just south of the city.

Empty and barricaded. This is the Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro, south-east of the Metro station EUR Magliana. The other (west) side was seen in The Last Man on Earth. SJ

Vatican underground railway, probably the London PO underground which was closed despite its efficiency... And now open as a museum from 2017 (ahead of schedule): Arthur Drysdale tells us that Willis and the film is mentioned in the train ride commentary.

From Italy Donatella Serra adds, "My first cousin owns the house facing the fortress of San Leo and my family still owns a house a kilometer from there since my parents were from Rimini. Across the narrow plain below San Leo are the Balconi di Piero from where it is thought porvided the background landscape of La Gioconda. The pointed mountain at the start of the film in the background is called the Maiolo."
