Additional Information:
This film was an early upload to the Site when the capture inclusion criteria was different from today (2022). Denis Hoare brought the aspect of missing location captures to our attention and kindly provided us with a revised set of captures, together with text, from a much improved quality print of the film and uploaded by Richard Lovejoy. For which we thank him.
Part of this film was filmed outside the house I lived in….141 Barlby Road North Kensington W.10..they used the house next door and in the film you can see my baby brother’s pram parked also our door bell marked KEW…Olive Lamb.
Can you help:
If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.
We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

Mr. Phipps' first job is to escort by bus, new probationer Hooker(Harry Fowler) to a hostel where he must stay as a condition of his bail. This scene is them waiting at the bus stop. Aldwych, London WC2 with No 61 in the background.
Trees have grown a bit, but supposed to be the same place.

Phipps goes in search of the father of another probationer, Albert Braxton (John Orchard). Latchmere Road, Battersea, London SW11, circa No 213 looking north.

Although the paving slabs have been replaced, the GPO/BT manhole cover seen in the capture is still in the same position so Peter Bywaters knew he was in the correct location and pressed the shutter button. (RL)

On another assignment Phipps makes his way to meet with Albert Braxton's father. Hall Place, London W2 looking towards Crompton Street. 'H. Hart & Sons' was a fried fish shop at No 54. A portion of those premises can be seen in 'The Blue Lamp' Capture 15 just behind the lorry on the right.

Phipps arrives at 'Lewisham' where Braxton lives. Supposedly south of the Thames, in London. Following a number of suggestions over the years Ray Glenister identified, with absolute proof, that it is, Hurstway Street, London W11 viewed from Blechynden Street. The shop on the corner at No 21, a grocer, although referred to as 'Ernest W J Davis - Chandler' in the Kelly's 1939 Directory.

Phipps on another of his many travels. This is a series of shots of Phipps going about his general business. Looking north on Rose Gardens in Ealing W5 confirmed by Ray Glenister who adds that the spire of St Mary's Church, a local landmark, can be seen over the top of Cecil Parker's bowler hat. The church spire and tower feature prominently as Parker speaks to Warner in a back garden of a house in this road. This location is approximately ten minutes walk from Ealing Studios advises Michael Adams.

Replacing Ray's Google Earth view and Michael Adams' third party image, Antony Blair took this comparison from outside number 5 Rose Gardens.

Phipps still pounding the streets. Is this the same street as in C5? Robbie Paterson providing a map, comparative Google Earth view and other Internet evidence to say that this was actually Upcerne Road that used to stretch up to the Kings Road. The northern half was turned into a park circa 1981 replacing damaged housing and the Prefabs following controversial redevelopment plans. The camera was located at the crossroads with Meek Street.
A visit to what is now Westfield Park provides not only a view of the Park and the remaining housing in Upcerne Road but also an "interpretation board" giving a timeline of events, a map and photographs of that area. The board is actually located at that very crossroads. (RL)

Still pounding the streets. The Iron Bridge in Brentford, looking towards Brook Rd South. Top left hand corner of the picture is the Brook Rd stand of Griffin Park (Brentford FC) which has now been demolished, with thanks to Peter Townley who has solved a 10 year-old mystery.
A rather significant change to the bridge as well. (RL)

Phipps asks for directions. The bridge on Ealing Road, Brentford, that crosses the railway, looking South. The conveyor system in the background was part of the Brentford Gasworks that were demolished in the 60's. Brentford Football ground was, and is, on the right hand side of this road just over the bridge. Ealing Road Brentford is a continuation of South Ealing Road, St Mary's Road, and Ealing Green, the location of Ealing Studios - around a 30 minute brisk walk away. Michael Adams.
And now a pic from Michael. The detail is in the letter box! Wow! And all those houses gone as well. Good bit of forensic investigation from young Adams.

Phipps calls up to a kid on the top floor asking if Mrs. WIlliams lives there. Stedham Place, just behind New Oxford Street. Sleuthed by Adrian.
This is Stedham Place, just behind New Oxford Street. A couple of years ago I could have matched the viewpoint, but since then this has been 'gated' and only this oblique view is possible now. Sleuthed by Adrian.

Hooker drives a lorry loaded with Scotch whisky into the yard of the transport company he works for, and is told the lorry won't be unloaded until the following morning. See Capture 29. Here looking from the 'Corporation Yard' across Kensal Road with 'the ramp' seen in other captures mid ground to the left.

Richard Bennett spent some time capturing the long outstanding shots in the 'Corporation Yard' and here, now the home of a colourful array of bins and pallets.

Hooker meets and tells Norma he knows about her meeting her old boyfriend Jordie the previous night, and tells her he's taken money from some crooks in exchange for tipping them off about the lorry loaded with whisky. Norma tells Hooker to stop and to return the money, Hooker agrees. Jonathan Horswell recognised the large metal water pipe carried by Ladbroke Grove bridge as it takes Ladbroke Grove over the Great Western Main Line running out of Paddington, which makes the building to the immediate left the predecessor of Octavia House on Southern Row in W10.

Richard did well to capture the water pipe in clearly more restrictive circumstances these days.

Hooker approaches the people who gave him the money for the tip off in order to return the money. West Row, London W10 looking directly down the western end of Southern Row towards the rear of tenement style block called Western Dwellings. A tank of Kensal Green Gas Works sits in the background top left.

Despite all the changes Richard was pleased to see that the tall slender building with three windows had survived to help him with the composition of the shot.

Phipps bumps into Matty (Celia Johnson) in the street where he tells her he's worried about Hooker. Amazingly identified by David Neicho Appleford Road, London W10 looking towards the 'Earl Derby' on the corner of Bosworth Road and Southern Row.

Amazingly identified by David Neicho. A corner pub still with the sign. This film was the catalyst that started ReelStreets ten years and a thousand films ago. Bosworth Rd /Appleford Rd., W10.

- 02 Jun 2025

The crooks start to break into the yard of the transport company where the lorry is parked. Dave W has found this location and consequently a number of the subsequent captures that used this same spot. An O.S. Map circa the time of filming, shows it to be a 'Corporation Yard' on the corner of Kensal Road and Ladbroke Grove, London W10. In this capture 'the crook' is facing what was the 'Western Arms' at 337 Kensal Road. The site has been re-developed into what is now known as the Portobello Docks.

From back in the 'Corporation Yard' Richard captured another closed pub, that, as he says, whilst still standing, fears for not much longer.

The two crooks and Hooker run to the where the lorry is parked. See previous capture. Here looking east towards 326 Kensal Road that remains today, now known as 'The Gramophone Works' (once the home of Saga Records), as does the ramp, recorded as such on the same O.S. Map.

The colourful bins and pallets once again together with some new planting captured by Richard.

Crooks running to the parked lorry in the transport company's yard. See Capture 30. At the top of the ramp looking over Kensal Road towards West Row. All those properties have been replaced.
