Jack & Sarah

A set of London locations accompanies the titles. This is the DLR line at Canary Wharf, London E14, looking onto One Canada Square, a building also seen in 'Face', 'Goodbye Charlie Bright', and 'Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence'.

It's Charing Cross Station WC2, viewed from the west side of Hungerford Bridge. You'd be doing well to get the correct angle for a 'now' shot.

The story begins as Jack (Richard E. Grant) emerges from a branch of Barclays Bank in Lancaster Road at the junction with Ladbroke Grove W11. This branch finally closed on 24 November 2023.

The former bank has yet to be re-occupied. SJ

Jack finds his car has been clamped. Behind him is the Kensington Park Hotel, 139 Ladbroke Grove W11, once a famous music pub, reincarnated in 2023 as The Knight of Notting Hill.

As the builders carry some rubble away, the face of local tramp William (Ian McKellen) appears from the skip. Penzance Place, nearing the junction with Princedale Road W11.

Jack's wife is due to give birth soon, and so he helps with the shopping at Mothercare. From the reflection we can see that this is directly opposite a Marks & Spencer store.

Tragedy strikes as Jack's wife Sarah dies giving birth. Phil (Eileen Atkins), her mother, lays flowers on the grave. Brompton Cemetery SW10, with Chelsea FC's East Stand in the background. The cemetery can also be seen in 'Goldeneye', 'Johnny English', 'Afraid of the Dark', 'Eastern Promises', 'Melody' and 'Under Suspicion'.

A mourning Jack is being driven by his sister-in-law Pamela along Westbourne Park Road as they pass Powis Terrace W11.

They walk off down the street forcing Jack to bond with his daughter. St. James's Gardens.

Jack takes baby Sarah into his offices. 60 London Wall EC2, which became the home of ING Barings bank from 1995 and was demolished in 2018.

Jack has a heart-to-heart with his father on Primrose Hill NW1.

Ever the perfectionist, Denis Hoare feels that he reaklly should have waited until next winter, as there's a lot of people on the hill and the leaves on the trees restrict the view. However, as the two lamposts on the summit of Primrose Hill, and the double-trunked tree are there to identify the location he pressed the shutter. (RL)

Jack chases after waitress Amy, who has left her job after a commotion in a restaurant. Neal's Yard, Covent Garden WC2.

Jack decides to offer Amy (Samantha Mathis) a job as a nanny. She accepts, even though she has no experience. Saint James Church and houses in Addison Avenue can be seen through the doorway.

Margaret and Phil are appalled and phone Jack from a phonebox nearby when they find the house empty. Unidentified location.

Amy finds nothing to do on her day off and sits alone by Regent's Canal.

Amy has dinner by herself in a back-street cafe. Unidentified location.

Jack joins Amy as she tries to find accommodation but nothing is suitable. Location currently unidentified.

Jack takes Amy on trip to Camden market. This is Camden High Street NW1, facing southeast from the canal bridge.

Denis Hoare is of the opinion that the original footage in the film was almost certainly shot from a fire escape for the indoor market, but unfortunately, it was locked up at the time of his visit. As is customary, not to be defeated, he went into the shop on the side and was allowed to take photos from their side window. It doesn't give the exact angle but it's pretty close. I took standing on the pavement outside 18 Pembridge Villas which is indeed on the road called Chepstow Villas. The property is now gated and the big tree on the left in the capture went in 2020. The traffic island in front of 9 Pembridge Villas has much more planting. SJ
