An industrial landscape sets the scene. Steve Randall's research found that this is looking north-west from the top of the Widnes tower of the Widnes Transporter Bridge crossing the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal in Cheshire. The view includes the Ethelfleda railway viaduct leading to Runcorn Bridge, the adjacent West Bank Power Station and houses on Viaduct Street curving away to the bottom right.

Factory hooters whistle signalling the end of the working day as Mr. Lovejoy walks home to find that his Wife has won £500 on the football pools.

Mrs. Lovejoy buys Wimple Cottage close to Whiston Woods and opens a tea room which causes offence to the local landowner, Lady Maydew. Heatherden Hall within Pinewood Studios at Iver in Buckinghamshire.
