Oliver arrives at Pearson's bookshop. Queen Charlotte Street running alongside the Market Cross House in Windsor with High Street in the background. Almost identical shots can be seen in 'The Quatermass Xpperiment' and 'Allez France!' and the narrow streets around also appear in 'Terror Street', 'A Case for P.C. 49' and 'Tunes of Glory'.

I heard the guide say that this is the shortest street in Britain. (RL)

After a misjudged kiss whilst working late, shop manager John Harman (George Brent) and Ruby Bruce (Diana Dors) leave the premises. Queen Charlotte Street in Windsor.

Now more colourful. (RL)

Ex-con Jeffrey Hart (Peter Reynolds) persuades Ruby to blackmail Harman after hearing her story about the kiss. This looks very much like the old General Post Office in High Street, Windsor.

Following some intensive research Phil Richards has provided us with this shot of the location now as near as possible to the original given that the original Post Office was demolished circa 1972. (RL)

A letter to Harman's wife letter is posted. The GPO on High Street was demolished and replaced in the early 1970s.

The Postman delivers Ruby's letter telling the invalid Mrs. Harman that her husband has been carrying on with her.

After his wife dies whilst burning Ruby's letter, Harman arrives at the shop to collect surplus books for a jumble sale. Market Street in Windsor with Queen Charlotte Street running to the left. The castle is carefully hidden out of shot to the right and this location can be seen in 'Terror Street'.

Harman gets out of the car. The junction of Queen Charlotte Street and Market Street with The Carpenter's Arms public house in the background, which was seen in 'The Stranger Left No Card', 'Brimstone and Treacle' and 'Tunes of Glory'.

As the police investigate the disappearance of Ruby, The box of books in manhandled into Harman's house.

Inspector Dale finds that Harman was the last person to see Ruby and dispatches officers to his Putney home.

As Harman opens the box and discovers Ruby's body, the officers draw up at the front of the house.

Panicking, Harman flees from his house and arrives at the station.

The fugitive stops dead when he sees policemen at the ticket barrier. Windsor & Eton Riverside station, Datchet Road in Windsor.

It remains a very relaxed station. (RL)

Before the officers spot him, Harman leaves the station. Windsor & Eton Riverside station which is also seen in 'All the Right Noises', 'I Want What I Want', 'That's Your Funeral', 'Two Left Feet', 'The Stranger Left No Card', 'The House Across the Lake' and 'Richard's Things'.

He would now be heading for the Ladies.....except they were out of order. (RL)

Police are seen everywhere. David Copley identifies this as King Street in Maidenhead with The Greyhound public house to the right.

Admitting that the location isn't very exciting, David provides this comparison.

Harman wanders the streets before calling his old friend Stella Tracey at the shop. Whilst consentrating on this film for other captures, Phil Richards managed to add an address to this one, Kings Grove, Maidenhead on the corner of Clair Road. (RL)

The door is opened as Stella Tracey (Marguerite Chapman) arrives at the bombed church where Harman is hiding out.

Stella is asked to look after the arrangements for Mrs. Harman's funeral. This is the St. Saviours Church on The Grove in Ealing W5 which had been destroyed by incendiary bombs during the Second World War.

This is the corner of The Grove and the road which leads to the car park for Ealing shopping centre. These next three nows are all merely approximations to where the actors actually stood. SJ

Harman tells Stella the what happened and the two start to piece together parts of the puzzle.

After telephoning Clive Oliver at the shop, Stella makes her way to meet with him. The gardens next to St James's church between Jermyn Street and Piccadilly in London W1 with the Piccadilly Hotel in the right background.

Whilst Oliver waits inside, Stella and Harman take cover as a Policeman patrols outside the bookshop. Steve Randall recognised Market Street in Windsor, Berkshire, a view which is virtually the same as one seen in 'The Gambler and the Lady'.

Steve Randall found that the street looks just as cluttered nowadays.

Whilst following a lead, Stella finds Hart and is taken back to the flat where he is staying. Th rear of properties on Park Street in Windsor, Berkshire.

Hart sets fire to the flat with Stella inside as Inspector Dale (Meredith Edwards) and Detective Todd (Conrad Phillips) arrive outside with Harman. David Copley locates this alley as running between numbers 2 and 3 Park Street in Windsor, which can also be seen in 'Five Days'.

Steve Randall returned to the location on a sunny day.

When he sees flames leaping from an upper window, Harman runs to the front of the building. Looking towards Park Street in Windsor recognised by David Copley. A similar view is seen in 'A Case for P.C. 49'.
