“He could get out of bed. Four o'clock in the afternoon. Light up a fag and smoke it, just like that! What a man!” Malcolm Scrawdyke (John Hurt) manages to begin his day. This is inside one of the buildings at the site of the former Oldham Gasworks in Lancashire.

Malcolm looks out of the window towards the Art College that he has been thrown out of. This is the Queensgate Annexe of the Huddersfield College of Technology on Queensgate in Huddersfield, Yorkshire.

Friend and former fellow student Irwin Ingham (Raymond Platt) leaves the building on his way to Malcolm’s lodgings. Now known as the Joseph Priestly Building, the annexe now forms part of the University of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.

Joined by Wick Blagdon (John McEnery), Malcolm and Irwin head for the nearby bus stop. This is part of the yard at Oldham Gasworks that had its entrance at the corner of Greaves Street and Ashworth Street. The location has been obliterated and Gallery Oldham now stands on the site.

The party members rehearse the kidnapping of Phillip Allard, the head who threw Malcolm out of the college. Within the derelict Oldham Gasworks.

Playing the part of Allard, Wick is bundled into the the getaway car. This waste ground was once the site of a gasometer and remains partly vacant, grassed over at the junction of Emmott Way and Oldham Way.

As the car crashes into an oncoming lorry, Allard falls out. In the background passes Oldham Way with the railway line beyond and the former parcel depot in the right distance.

Allard is carried away from the car. On old maps, this roadway followed a line continuing from Gas Street. This area now lies between at the back of Gallery Oldham and Emmott Way.

Wick elects to walk up the short flight of steps after being dropped earlier. Inside the former gas works suitably dressed with lamps, traffic signs, street signs and advertising ephemera.

Nearby, an Old Man leaves his house to walk his dog. This is a doorway within the gas works that faces the steps seen in the previous capture.

The Old Man pauses in front of Wick, who has been dropped and left by the others. The sign reading Commercial Yard is a prop.

Allard is picked up again and carried into an empty building. The building is also within the former Oldham Gasworks and overlooked Oldham Way.

In preparation for the theft of a painting, Nipple leaves the Art Gallery. The Central Library, Art Gallery and Museum on Union Street in Oldham.

Bracing against the icy wind, the four make their way across waste ground. Looking over Oldham with the tower of St. Mary’s church visible in the left distance.

Moving ahead, Wick climbs onto an oil drum and shouts “Hail Scrawdyke” before giving a rousing welcome to the party leader. This appears to be a cleared site in the Coldhurst Street area.

Wick and Irwin give the party salute. In the background stand buildings on Henshaw Street with the former Brighton Hotel at the corner of Lord Street to the top centre.

Standing on the oil drum, Malcolm Scrawdyke surveys the horizon to the sound of a cheering crowd as he delivers a passionate speech.

Irwin knocks Nipple to the ground after he poses as an assassin. To the top left can be seen one of the Oldham Brewery’s buildings. Brewing at the site ended in 1988.
