If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.

We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. • 'Now' required

The opening is looking at part of Gibraltar Airport from the beach next door (Playa de Santa Bárbara). All the military related items in the shot were added for the film.

  • 'Now' required

Then the camera pans up to look at the famous Rock of Gibraltar. Other views of Gibraltar appear in 'Ulysses', 'A Woman's Privilege', 'The Clue of the Missing Ape', 'The Running Man' and 'I Was Monty's Double'.

  • 'Now' required

It seems the military installation is probably on O’Hara’s Battery, the highest point of the Rock in Gibraltar.

  • 'Now' required

The installation has various troop patrols who are participating in this MOD training exercise to penetrate the radar installations of Gibraltar.

  • 'Now' required

The next few shots (unidentified locations) show the group of 00's decend on to various areas of 'The Rock’.

  • 'Now' required

One of the first to land, this 00 agent finds himself neatly on a quiet bit of road next to a stretch of sea-facing wall.

  • 'Now' required

This member of the team snags part of his parachute on a tree branch before letting himself free.

  • 'Now' required

The MOD soldiers score the first victory in the simulated attack and ‘shoot’ their first 00 agent.

  • 'Now' required

Bond (Timothy Dalton) realises someone is not playing the game as intended and so he gives chase…

  • 'Now' required

Sprinting down the road of the official MOD area, Bond is playing catch up to the Land Rover below. Steve Randall points out that this is looking up Rock Gun road.

  • 'Now' required

James Bond is the only one in the training group who has realised this exercise is no longer just a game. This soldier is surprised when his pretend foe doesn’t want to stop. Steve Randall mentions that we are looking at the fork of Rock Station road and Signal Station road.

  • 'Now' required

Just managing to draw level with the vehicle, Bond makes a leap for the roof. As Steve Randall pointed out, Bond is effectively jumping from Rock Station road onto Signal Station road. The road on the right here (Signal Station road) is still currently a gated military road.

  • 'Now' required

Whilst holding on tight, James needs to figure out how to gain control of the speeding Land Rover and stop the killer. In reality we’ve actually jumped backwards in geography on ‘the rock’, as this and the next few shots were filmed on the higher part of Rock Gun Road which is actually further up behind where the action for shot #10 was done.

  • 'Now' required

An excellent wide shot of the Rock of Gibraltar, showing the military installation at the top as the vehicle speeds down the side road. Again movie magic means we’re actually looking at a higher segment of Rock Gun road which is further back up the hill from where Timothy Dalton originally jumped onto the Land Rover at the beginning of the action sequence.

  • 'Now' required

Bond and ‘his driver’ are approaching the next small military check point. This segment of Rock Gun road is actually, in real life, going to lead down towards the area at the beginning of this sequence.

  • 'Now' required

Another soldier innocently tries to halt this part of what he still thinks is the training exercise with his paint gun bullets.

  • 'Now' required

Having bundled the previous soldier out of the way, another soldier fires real ammunition at the back of the Land Rover as it speeds through the check point beyond and starts to catch fire.

  • 'Now' required

Smoke billowing out of the rear, the ‘Rover shows no sign of slowing down. This particular make of Land Rover is a Series III that was launched in 1971. This version was also used in the Daniel Craig Bond film ‘No Time To Die’ in 2021.

  • 'Now' required

Now out onto civilian sections of the Rock of Gibraltar, the vehicle starts losing control and hitting other cars, causing both people and monkeys to scramble out of the way.

  • 'Now' required

Finally the end of the road for the fire laden ‘Rover as it bursts through a perimeter road and heads straight for the ocean.

  • 'Now' required

The caption claims the location as Czechoslovakia but in reality this was shot in Vienna, on Wahringer Strasse, 9th District.

  • 'Now' required

The camera pans over to the Vienna Volksoper (Volksoper or Vienna People's Opera), an opera house where Bond meets Saunders. The interiors of the Opera house were filmed in Sofiensaal, a concert hall and recording venue located in Vienna about 4.6km away (about ten mins by car).

Bond and Saunders walk over to a safe house. This is across the road from the Opera House on the corner of Wahringer Strasse and Schlagergasse.

Hans was quick off the mark here. (SJ)

Bond 'accidentally' misses to throw the sniper's aim whilst still protecting General Georgi Koskov (Jeroen Krabbe), who was being targeted from an Opera House window.

Another from Hans... The tree may prove a hindrance to a decent shot of cap22. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

The General is told to get in the front of the taxi. A Bond fan who previously lived & worked in Vienna advises that this courtyard is either a small studio set or a different location to the shot that follows, as in real life the arch where the Audi pulls out does not look anything like what is shown here.

  • 'Now' required

Car pulls out of the courtyard onto Traungasse, Vienna. They head towards the double arches but turn left and head down Lagergasse.

  • 'Now' required

The car escape route goes through Doktor-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz.

  • 'Now' required

They pull up near the pipeline station. This location is currently still unidentified.

  • 'Now' required

Bond and Georgi make their way to the pipeline buildings with the help of Rosika Miklos (Julie T. Wallace).

Saunders waits on the border crossing bridge. This is actually Steinsporn Bridge, Vienna.

Taken by Hans. The writing really is on the road and not a Google map indicator. (SJ)

Various people hear something in the pipe which ends up at ****. In reality these buildings are the Wiener Gasometer. These historic buildings still stand and have been restored and turned into shops and entertainment venues. The Gasometers of Vienna are at Guglgasse 6, 1110 Vienna, Austria.

Hans passed by. (SJ)

Yorgi gets out and is ushered up the stairs.

Another from Hans. (SJ)

Cleaner wide shot of the Wiener Gasometers at Guglgasse 6, 1110.

A detail from Hans, but this is replaceable. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

Bond and Saunders cross the border check point on Steinsporn Bridge, Vienna.

This shot showing a London junction is looking at Trafalgar Square with an entrance for Charing Cross Underground station in the foreground. If the camera looked just to the right we would see Nelson's Column.

In days gone by, a popular place for newspaper selling, as seen in, for example, Sea Wife. SJ

  • 'Now' required

A seemingly normal jogger...who is KGB Agent Necros (Andreas Wisniewski) is heading down Balham's Lane, Henley-on-Thames RG9 6HG.

  • 'Now' required

The milkman is about to loose his round as he passes the entrance of White Pond Farm, Balham's Lane, Henley-on-Thames RG9 6HG.

  • 'Now' required

007 drives through the gates towards Blayden's Safe House. This is actually in the grounds of Stonor House in Oxfordshire.

  • 'Now' required

This is Stonor Park, a historic country house and private deer park in the Chiltern Hills at Stonor, about four miles (6.4km) north of Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire.

  • 'Now' required

Bond gets searched at the entrance to the estate house.

  • 'Now' required

The milk float arrives at a side entrance of Stonor Park with its disguised KGB agent at the wheel.

  • 'Now' required

A kitchen scuffle sees a false alarm raised and staff on the grounds are alerted to action.

  • 'Now' required

The helicoptor lands and KGB agent Necros is helping extract a drowsy General Georgi in the grounds of Stonor Park.

  • 'Now' required

The apparent helicopter medical staff rush to put the General on a stretcher at the side of Stonor Park in Oxfordshire.

007 is back at the Vienna Volksoper (Volksoper or Vienna People's Opera). He sees Kara Milovy (Maryam d'Abo) outside and follows her.

The added lettering has since disappeared. Hans (SJ)

He follows her on the tram down, Jonathan at minder.org tells us, Hormayrgasse, 18th District, a few streets away from where Kara's apartment is.

And yes, Jonathan did wait for a tram to complete the shot. (RL)

Two agents get out of their car with the intent of boarding the tram. Antonigasse 90-94, 1170 Vienna, Austria.

Hans visited. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

They remove Kara from the tram and bring her to a waiting General Leonid Pushkin (John Rhys-Davies).

  • 'Now' required

They put Kara in the car and head in the Easterly direction down Antonigasse.

The tram stops outside a tram yard. The building is still standing but is now a sports hall and called the USI Sportstätte Kreuzgasse, Kreuzg. 74, 1180 Vienna, Austria. A large Eurospar currently stands directly in front of it.

Hans avoided the Eurospar. (SJ)

Bond takes the cello case over to a public toilet. Suprisingly this location really is just across from the (ex) tram station. As of 2024 the building is still standing, though not directly accessible. Kreuzg. 72-74, 1180 Vienna.

Hans managed this shot. (SJ)

Kara has been let go and walks back to her apartment near to where she was taken off the tram at Antonigasse 90-94, 1170 Vienna.

The parking forced Hans onto the pavement. (SJ)

KGB car returns to the street and parks across the road from Kara's apartment. Antonigasse 90-94, 1170 Vienna.

Hans again. (SJ)

Bond leaves Kara's apartment, fully aware that the KGB car is watching.

No stopping Hans. (SJ)

Then Kara leaves with the cello case and heads to the phonebox.

More cars in Hans' way. (SJ)

Bond pulls away after the tram blocks the view. Jonathan at minder.org advises that he speeds down Schlagergasse. (RL)

Jonathan provides this comparative shot in support of his identification. (RL)

Reluctantly Bond returns to Vienna Volksoper (Volksoper or Vienna People's Opera) so that Kara can retrieve her cello.

A little tricky to match doors and windows here. Hans. (SJ)

KGB agent walks towards the telephone booth.

No Telefon available here for Hans. (SJ)

The car turns on the unidentified snowy road. Manuel Gurtner explains that we see Bond's Aston Martin V8 Saloon Series 4 'Oscar India' driving up towards lake Weißensee on the Weißensee Straße (federal road B 87) between Greifenburg and Weißbriach in Carinthia, Austria, which leads from the Drava Valley over the so-called Kreuzberg Saddle into the Gail Valley. The Grafenweger hamlet can be seen in the background, and above in the distance the Jauken mountain range with the peaks of Spitzkofel (2223 m), Mitterkofel (2247 m) and Torkofel (2276 m).

Hans found the spot in a different season, providing these co-ordinates Lat 46.731000 Long 13.226170. (SJ)

Now Bond has the unwelcome attention of the local police on the Drautalstrasse (Drava valley road) in Carinthia. This is the E66 road just before the crossing over the Drava river and just before the tunnel.

Hans on/by the quiet road. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

Bond has an explosive way of dealing with the road block on the Drautalstrasse.

They then head into the South entrance of the Festungsbergtunnel............

The south end in summer by Hans. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

.......and exit the North entrance of the tunnel. Geographically, in real life, they are heading away from the lake in the next sequence.

Swerve due to the military vehicle and onto a smaller snowy road. These roads were currently unidentified but Hans has provided co-ordinates Lat 46.731550 Long 13.228044 on route 87

Hans found the intersection. (SJ)

They head towards the frozen lake Weißensee which, Manuel Gurtner tells us, is in the area of Naggl village, part of the Weißensee municipality. Of course, the small shed by the lake is just a movie prop, but the twin firs are still standing, belonging to the property of the Nagglerhof hotel, today used as private beach with jetty for hotel guests during summertime. Across the lake Neusach village, another part of the Weißensee municipality, can be recognised.

The lake no longer frozen. (SJ)

Having picked up a shed, the Aston Martin attempts to speed along the Western direction of lake Weißensee.

Hans with this shot, slightly wider to show more of the left incline. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

The snowcat speeds alongside the lakeside. Camouflaged as a vehicle of the Czechoslovak army, the 1983 Kässbohrer Flexmobil comes to a halt right next to the parked Škoda near the twin firs that can already be seen in capture 65.

Bond eyes the ramp as an escape solution. This seems to have been filmed towards the far Western end of Lake Weißensee but Manuel Gurtner explains that the location is situated 17 kilometers by aerial distance further south, and is, strictly speaking, already in Italy, because shot onto the frozen Lago del Pramollo, a small reservoir beyond the Austrian border at Nassfeld village, Carinthia. The 'Iron Curtain' with barbed wire and watchtower was set directly on the dam crest, which 007 overcomes in a spectacular stunt. In the background rises the Carnic Alps mountain range with the peaks of Monte Malvuerich alto (1899 m), Monte Malvuerich basso (1813 m) and Monte Cervo (1374 m).

Good match of skyline on the right for Hans. (SJ)

Riding on the cello case, they head towards the border. This sloped area was at first unidentified but thought to be in the Naggler-Alm area, near to the lake... Hans supplies co-ordinates Lat 46.698945 Long 13.314077, which indeed is just east of Naggler-Alm.

This makes a good border post for Hans. (SJ)

They pass through the boarder on the cello case and into Austria. This is somewhere West of Lake Weißensee, possibly around the Pobersach area. It is a different location from the previous shot, despite them being designed to match... Hans says Lat 46.732596 Long 13.246720 (Tröbelsberg)

Hans matches the distant mountains well here. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

Tangier in Morocco. This shot of the city shows the minaret of the Kasbah Mosque (also known as the Great Mosque of Tangier), which was built in the 17th century.

  • 'Now' required

The cars head down Rue Shakespeare and stops outside the white building. The Palais Mendoub, Mendoub's Residence or Dar al-Mandub, formerly known as the Forbes Museum of Tangier, is a cultural monument and 10-acre property located on Mohammed Tazi Street in the Marshan neighborhood of Tangier, Morocco. These visitors don't realise they are being spied on from across the road

  • 'Now' required

Bond and Kara ride by carriage taxi in Vienna. Here they are passing through the Maria-Theresien-Platz. The large square building in the background is the Hofjagd und Rüstkammer, a museum which houses an impressive collection of imperial armor and weaponry.

Even though in real life this location is a ten minute car ride (or hour walk!) from the previous shot, this line of trees marks the Obeliskenallee with a glimpse of Schloss Schonbrunn palace at the end.

A similar blue sky for Hans. (SJ)

People are waltzing outside the Schönbrunn Palace, Hietzing, 13th district of Vienna. The 1,441-room Baroque palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historic monuments in Austria. We can also see down one side of Lichte Allee.

Not so busy for Hans. (SJ)

Passing the musical area, we also get a glimpse of the Gloriette on the hill in the background. From the 12th-century French gloire meaning "little room", it is a building in a garden erected on a site that is elevated with respect to the surroundings.

Hans captured the little room in its full glory. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

Another jump in geography and they arrive outside the Palais Schwarzenberg. This is a Baroque palace in front of Schwarzenbergplatz, Landstraße, the 3rd district of Vienna. Although it was functioning as a hotel when the Bond film was made, as of 2025 it is closed and being redeveloped.

  • 'Now' required

Yorgi is pool-side at The Palais Mendoub, Mendoub's Residence or Dar al-Mandub, formerly known as the Forbes Museum of Tangier.

  • 'Now' required

Yorgi talks to the arms dealer (Brad Whittikar), who is eating at a table. This is still the Palais Mendoub.

At the fun fair. Saunders looks up at them on the big ferris wheel. The wheel itself is called the 'Wiener Riesenrad' (Vienna Giant) and is at the entrance of the Prater amusement park in Leopoldstadt, 2nd District, Vienna, Austria.

Hans timed this for the evening. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

Saunders heads to a cafe in the fairground.

Explosives in the glass takes out Saunders. Bond briefly gives chase to some balloons but turns out he was chasing the wrong balloon carrier.

Hans with this final shot during his trip to Wien. (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

In Tangier, Morocco. Bond watches the North African trade conference where general Pushkin is attending. This location is the Museum of Contemporary Art, located in the grounds of the Kasbah Museum, Place de la kasbah, Tangier 90030, Morocco.

  • 'Now' required

Bond tails General Pushkin (John Rhys Davies) through some narrow streets of Tangier. This first street is Rue Riad Sultan

  • 'Now' required

...and this shot is also Rue Riad Sultan, from the reverse angle looking back down the same road.

  • 'Now' required

Bond stops his car outside the hotel gates, next to the 'Gran Café de Paris, Pl. de France, Tangier, Morocco', which is still there under the same name as of Feburary 2025.

  • 'Now' required

The General's car ends up at the hotel 'Ile De France' in central Tangier. In reality this building is the French consulate which is at 2 Place de France, Rue de la Liberte, Tangier 90000, Morocco.

  • 'Now' required

After the shooting, Bond escapes across the roofs of Tangier.

  • 'Now' required

  • 'Now' required

  • 'Now' required

Bond gets offered a lift whilst on an unidentified Tangerian road.

  • 'Now' required

He offers some money whilst being driven along the wide Ave Mohammed VI street in Tangier, which runs alongside the marina area. Bond discovers that leaving the car is not an option. The hotel in the background is the Marina Bay Hotel, 152 Ave Mohammed VI, Tangier 90000, Morocco.

  • 'Now' required

They turn onto a harbour road alongside an unidentified marina in Tangier.

  • 'Now' required

General Georgi is outside on his patio in the sun.

  • 'Now' required

Bond and Kara are in a hotel. Currently unidentified.

  • 'Now' required

With Bond drugged, he is put in an ambulance and they drive him onto a plane at Tangier airport.

  • 'Now' required

The plane touches down in ‘Afghanistan’. This is actually still Morocco, as Ouarzazate Airport was used for the Russian airbase sequences.

  • 'Now' required

After escaping the compound, Kamran Shan (Art Malik) leads them with his Afghan Resistance group to their 'ruined castle' on the hill. This is Kasbah du Glaoui de Tamdakhte, Tamedakhte, Morocco. It is in the High Atlas Mountains, located 5 kilometers from the famous Ait Ben Haddou ksar, downstream from the Ounila valley.

  • 'Now' required

Kamran Shan leads his group back into their base.

  • 'Now' required

  • 'Now' required

  • 'Now' required

This courtyard is still the same location at Kasbah du Glaoui de Tamdakhte, but the well in the foreground wasn't real and just put there for filming.

  • 'Now' required

  • 'Now' required

Bond and Kara finally take off, but remember in reality we are in Morocco and seem to have the beautiful High Atlas mountains in the background.

  • 'Now' required

Bond sees the resistence fighters near their stronghold, trying to escape the enemy advance. This shot is a spectacular optical illusion combining a minature model in the foreground with the real live action of the men on horseback riding over the real bridge. Everything below the top part of the bridge is a model. It is an incredible special effect that works seamlessly.

  • 'Now' required

This is a shot looking over the real bridge, where the height of its legs provided by the miniature special effect were not required. The exact location of the real bridge is currently unidentified, as it doesn't seem to match anywhere around the immediate vicinity of Kasbah du Glaoui de Tamdakhte.

  • 'Now' required

Having got in the jeep and bailed out of the plane, they decide to head to Karachi. This junction was likely filmed near the Ouarzazate Airport area in Morocco. If that was the case then the road signs would have been props created for the movie to give the correct distance for these scenes apparently taking place in Afghanistan.
