Taylor King walks through the snow from a Finnish airport before being knocked down by a van and searched by the Driver before being left to die. This appears to be either the Western Perimeter Road or the Southern Perimeter Road of Heathrow Airport in Hounslow, Greater London.

  • 'Now' required

In London, British Intelligence Director LeClerc, Adrian Haldane and John Avery look at photographs taken in a Kalkstadt railway yard showing what is believed to be the outline of a Soviet missile. In reality, the railway yard is somewhere in Britain as suggested by the English Electric locomotive in the right distance.

After being recruited by British Intelligence, Polish defector Friedrich Leiser looks through the window of the car taking him from London to the south coast.

John Avery flies to Finland to identify Taylor's body. This additional capture by Manuel Gurtner shows a Finnair Super Caravelle landing at Vantaa Airport in Helsinki, while in the background the airport's distinctive hangar with two arches can be seen.

Leiser and his trainer Avery meet with Johnson in Eastbourne. Royal Parade in Eastbourne, Sussex with Marine Road joining from the right to continue towards Eastbourne Pier as Marine Parade. The resort has been seen in plenty of films including ‘84 Charing Cross Road’, 'Made in Dagenham', 'The Look of Love', 2010's 'Brighton Rock', 'The Embezzler' and 'Millions Like Us'.

Now viewed from ground level. (SD)

  • 'Now' required

John Avery returns from Finland where he had attempted to recover Taylor’s possessions. Working on the assumption that other scenes were shot at Heathrow Airport, we could also assume that this is Heathrow Airport too.

  • 'Now' required

While Leiser crawls through barbed wire at the East German border, Avery drives up to the isolated building where LeClerc and Haldane are waiting as Johnson sets up a radio transmitter. Manuel Gurtner advises that the cabin is located on the banks of the Cuerda del Pozo Reservoir in Spain. Producer John Box was very familiar with this area in the Spanish province of Soria, because of his production design for David Lean's 'Doctor Zhivago' in 1965.

  • 'Now' required

Surrounded by cyclists, Friedrich Leiser (Christopher Jones) nears a remote café where he asks directions to Kalkstadt. The book Looking Glass Wars by Alan Burton (Vernon Press ISBN 978-1-62273-467-2) indicates that filming took place in the Spanish province of Soria, Castile and León . . . . and Manuel Gurtner found this spot with the waters of the Cuerda del Pozo reservoir in the distance, probably to the north of Herreros.

  • 'Now' required

After the Waitress attends to Leiser’s injured hand, a Truck Driver (Michael Robbins) watches him walk away without his rucksack.

  • 'Now' required

Bringing the rucksack along, the Truck Driver catches up with Leiser.

  • 'Now' required

The journey to Kalkstadt continues until Leiser kills the Truck Driver and takes the vehicle after the East German propositions him. Manuel Gurtner identifies this as the viaduct over the Embalse de La Cuerda del Pozo in Soria with the lorry heading south in the direction of Abejar. The older bridge in the background is visible only at low water.

  • 'Now' required

Leiser struggles with Police at a checkpoint before the Officers are told to let him go after calling headquarters for instructions. The southern bridgehead of the Puente Rio Ebrillos, which crosses the western end of the Cuerda del Pozo Reservoir, located by Manuel.

Reaching Kalkstadt and finding Fritsche, Leiser pauses on a railway bridge before being approached by an East German Detective and his Men. The bridge taking Squires Bridge Road over the River Ash in Littleton, Surrey, identified by Nick Boorman. The bridge also features in 'The Last Chapter', 'The Night We Got the Bird' and 'Nothing Barred'.

Nick also provides this comparison view.

  • 'Now' required

The Detective drops Leiser in the centre of Kalkstadt where he checks into Der Gestiefelte Kater hotel. Manuel Gurtner tells us that this is a back lot at Shepperton Studios where, in 1967 several huge sets were created by production designer John Box for Carol Reed's musical 'Oliver!'

  • 'Now' required

Looking through his hotel room window that night, Leiser sees a missile being transported through the darkened street outside. Manuel continues that some of the sets for 'Oliver!' remained standing for many years and were modified for use in other films including 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie', 'The Creeping Flesh', 'I, Monster', 'Mr. Quilp' and 'The Best House in London'. In this example, modern lighting, street markings, signs and shop fascias in German were installed for the Kalkstadt scenes.

  • 'Now' required

Moving to the relative safety of the town’s hospital, Leiser sends a Morse code message to Johnson.

  • 'Now' required

Following the thaw, children play alongside the road from the airport where they find a film canister dropped by Taylor. Possibly either the Western Perimeter Road or the Southern Perimeter Road of Heathrow Airport in Hounslow with a plane coming in to land on the southern runway in the top background.
