Man Who Invented Christmas, The

New York City in 1842 . . . where Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) appears on stage during his tour of the United States. The Olympia Theatre at 72 Dame Street in the Temple Bar district of Dublin 2. The theatre's interior also appears in 'An Awfully Big Adventure'.

London in October 1843 . . . John Forster (Justin Edwards) follows Charles Dickens from the house after his last three books don't sell as well as expected. North Great George’s Street, Dublin 1.

Pat Cleary (PC) found that some of the street lights have since been removed.

Rather than taking a cab, Charles suggests to his friend John that they walk to his publishers, Chapman & Hall. Facing south-east on North Great George’s Street.

At the Garrick Club, Charles hides from William Makepeace Thackeray before sitting down for lunch with John.

As Charles writes notes about the people he meets while formulating his next story, for which John has secured an advance as his unofficial manager, he appears at a benefit in aid of the London Children's Refuge. The King's Inns Park frontage of King's Inns in Dublin 1.

Pat Cleary explains that The Honourable Society of King's Inns School of Law was founded in 1541 and the current building dates from 1804. Its renowned architect James Gandon also designed the Custom House and the Four Courts in Dublin which have featured regularly in films and television series over the years.

Mr. Grimsby (Bill Paterson) leaves the theatre with Mrs. Grimsby (Amelia Crowley) after telling Charles that the poor should be put in workhouses or better die to reduce the surplus population. King's Inns, Dublin 1.

Pat Cleary provides this view adding that the nearby library building contains more than 100,000 volumes.

Storming away from the theatre, Charles sees characters that are to become pivotal in the story he is writing.

Protecting them from the cold night air, a Man shields his Children inside his coat.

The author is nearly run down by a van belonging to Warren's Blacking, a firm he recalls being sent to work for during when he was young.

Chasing the Man and his Offspring, Charles finds himself in a graveyard where a miserly Gentleman is the only mourner at his business partner's burial.

When William Hall and Edward Chapman tell him that they cannot produce a book in the six weeks before Christmas, Charles decides to publish himself.

Undeterred by John's remarks, Charles enters a tailors to become "properly dressed" before starting to raise capital.

A locomotive whistle sounds as steam and smoke billow into the air at the railway station. King's Inns at the north-western end of Henrietta Street in Dublin 1.

This is where the "magic of the movies" takes over as Pat Cleary captures the inside of the small courtyard between Henrietta Street and the King's Inn building and grounds.

Pat Cleary dispels the magic!

Charles and John leave the offices of solicitor Thomas Haddock with a bill, and a loan at 25%, after learning that although they had won a lawsuit for copyright infringement, the defendant had no money.

After the characters of Scrooge and Marley come to life in his study, Charles talks about engaging an illustrator before John spots his former fiancée Charlotte Wigmore (Aideen Wylde) walking towards them.

Scrooge introduces the Ghost of Christmas Past to Charles who is taken back to his own childhood.

Left outside Warren's Blacking factory by his Father, a Young Charles Dickens (Ely Solan) stands shivering in the cold. Not a location but a matte shot.

Securing Mr. John Leech as illustrator and finding his Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, Charles and John end up at Hungerford Stairs while out for a drink.

When an end to the story can't be worked out, Charles' mind is cast into the past where he relives his introduction to the blacking factory Workers by the Foreman (Paul Kealyn).

Arriving home, Charles spots his Father rummaging through the dustbins on the steps to the basement. North Great George’s Street in Dublin 1.

Turning when Charles speaks to him, John Dickens hides paperwork in his coat and makes his way to the street. The steps to the basement of number 40 North Great George’s Street.

When it registers that his Father has been selling bits and pieces of him, Charles sends the old man away in tears. North Great George’s Street, Dublin.

Pat Cleary tells us that the house dressed as "The Garrick Club" in captures 4 and 32 is the second last house at the top of the street.

Charles takes a cab to the long closed Warren's Blacking factory and breaks in before Scrooge appears and tells him that his Father failed him over and over again in the darkness of the derelict building.

Writing the last stave with Scrooge's redemption as the end of the story, Charles runs from the house. North Great George’s Street, Dublin

Alighting from the cab, Charles runs to the building where Mr. Grub is waiting for the last chapter.
