Mandy

When it becomes apparent that his two year old daughter Amanda Jane is deaf, Harry Garland visits a Deaf School but is put off by the imposing institution. This is the Henshaw’s School for the Deaf and Dumb, Old Trafford in Manchester, Lancashire which closed in 1956.

Deciding against sending Mandy away, the family move in with Harry's parents where there is enough space to employ a Nurse-governess. Apart from new construction, Neil Kenny found that the existing building appears to have undergone a little bit of remodelling to the ground floor.

Anxious about her daughters development, Christine Garland (Phyllis Calvert) holds Mandy in her arms in the back courtyard of the house. Looking from the vicinity of Wellington Walk in Hammersmith W6 towards Hammersmith Bridge with the rear of the still extant City Arms public house and the coachworks next door to the top right.

Some years later, the family dog escapes from the courtyard through an open gate and Mandy (Mandy Miller) follows to try and retrieve it. In the left distance stand buildings at the corner of Hammersmith Bridge Road and Worlidge Street. However, it appears that the wall of the Garland’s back garden was built for the film as was the wall to the right.

A lorry draws near as the dog evades capture by running into the road. The name Curtis appears on the wooden gates to the right. Chas. W. Curtis, Builder, was at 51 Queen Street (Now Queen Caroline Street), London W6 (RL)

Whilst a very much changed view the new buildings appear to have retained original lines. (RL)

Mandy slowly approaches the dog, unable to hear the approaching lorry. The corner of Queen Caroline Street and Crisp Road in W6 with Caroline House to the left. The area also appears in ‘Cosh Boy’, 'Love in Pawn', 'The Small Voice', 'The Long Arm', ‘Home to Danger’, ‘No Trace’ and ‘Deadly Nightshade’.

The recently completed re-development of the 'Riverside Studios' is clearly visible and yes, it's a cat in the road, not a dog, let's not get too picky. (RL)

After a stern ticking off by the Lorry Driver, Mandy carries the dog home. A clearer view of the buildings in the left background where numbers 85 from 77 stand on Hammersmith Bridge Road.

Clearly upset, Mandy runs through the gateway to the courtyard and the safety of home.

Christine and her friend Lily take a trip to the Bishop David School in the hope of helping Mandy. This is the Henshaw’s School for the Deaf and Dumb, Old Trafford in Manchester, Lancashire which closed in 1956. The building appeared in the background during 'A Taste of Honey' and was demolished in 1972.

Outside the school Christine tells Lily Tabor (Eleanor Summerfield) that she's apprehensive before entering the building where Specialists explain that Mandy's deafness is congenital. Beside the gates at the front of the Royal Deaf School on Chester Road in Old Trafford, Lancashire.

Christine is shown around the school by Mr. Searle and she realises that Mandy could be helped here.

Dick Searle (Jack Hawkins) asks Miss Larner (Gabrielle Blunt) about a Child seen standing alone at the far side of the playground.

Christine and her husband Harry (Terence Morgan) sit on a park bench discussing Mandy's future whilst the youngster spots something of interest. Paul Brown spots this location as Walpole Park in Ealing, behind the Ealing Studios and Pitzhanger mansion. He states that the pond is still there but renovated.

Antony Blair returned to the location 69 years later.

A ball comes to rest near Mandy but the Children playing football tease her when she approaches them. Another view of the park where the background buildings may assist with identification. Paul Brown identifies this as Walpole Park, Mattock Lane in Ealing W5.

Antony took this view looking south-east with the only recognisable structure being the open sided tiled roofed pavilion to the centre as the distant buildings are masked by the trees.

Older Students head into the Bishop David School where Mandy has become a pupil. A wider view of the playground seen earlier brings more buildings into view.

Having moved north to be close to the school, Christine takes Mandy to the station after receiving a letter that Harry is visiting. The fake looking signage suggests that the station is a six platform terminus and the girders to the top of the capture are reminiscent of London’s Broad Street station on Liverpool Street EC2. However, Hammonds Ales, seen in the advertisement covering background location clues, were brewed in Bradford, Yorkshire. Christopher Matheson (www.londononlocation.co.uk) kindly brings to our attention that "A newspaper report of 8 March 1952 mentioned ‘This week-end the London-road station at Manchester is being transformed into Wellsborough station for scenes in “Mandy,”...... Harry alights from the train as it comes to a stand. This closer view shows that the Hammond’s advertisement has the wording “in Wellsborough” at the bottom right. The only place that Wellsborough appears is as the fictional Lancashire town where ‘The Man in the White Suit’ is set . . . which was made by the same studio the previous year. Having been identified by Christopher Matheson (www.londononlocation.co.uk) us that this Manchester London Road station, we can add that the station was renamed Manchester Piccadilly in 1960. (RL)

Dick Searle arrives outside the building where Mandy and her mother have taken up residence. Barry Ayton identifies this as facing west on Adie Road in Hammersmith with Overstone Road to the right of centre.

From his car, Dick sees the Garland's Landlady and Davey (John Cazabon), a Private Investigator, chatting outside the building. Confirmed by Lucie Bright, this is Adie Road W6 with The Grove Tavern to the right located by Barry . . . .

. . . who was just passing so took this comparison shot.

Later on, the Landlady heads to the pub after seeing Christine embrace Dick Searle when Mandy utters "mama" for the first time. Barry Ayton recognised The Grove Tavern at the corner of Adie Road and Hammersmith Grove.

Barry's view of the same corner shows that the background has survived the intervening years.

Inside the bar, the Neighbour tells the Investigator what she has seen. The Grove Tavern on Hammersmith Grove in W6.

Outside a restaurant, Dick and Christine sit talking in his car. The Orchard Hotel on Ickenham Road in Ruislip, Middlesex found by RL. The building also features in 'What Every Woman Wants' and 'Lolita'.

Antony Blair returned to the pub nearly 70 years later to find a remodelled frontage and adds that, during WW2 the hostelry became the local for the Polish Airmen who were based at RAF Northolt.

Driving back from the restaurant, Dick and Christine arrive at her home where they find Harry inside. Barry Ayton found Adie Road In Hammersmith with Overstone Road and Southerton Road to the top left.

Travelling on an overnight train, Harry takes Mandy back to his parents house. Stock footage of Watford Junction station which is used in many other productions.

Back in London, Mandy approaches Children playing on the waste ground at the rear of the house. Wellington Walk W6 with the rear of properties on Worlidge Street and the tower of St. Paul’s church in the distance.

Now content, Harry and Christine hold hands while watching Mandy join other Children in play as the closing credits begin to roll.
