Mrs Lowry & Son

"I paint what I see. I paint how I feel. I'm a man who paints. Nothing more, nothing less." Facing the audience, artist Laurence Stephen Lowry (Timothy Spall) stands in the rain. Looking up Crowther Street from Lower Hillgate in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Lancashire, 1934. Lowry plays games with Children as he walks through the industrial landscape of his paintings.

The rent collector tells the pleading youngsters that he hasn't any sweets today.

Lowry leaves a telephone box after calling Mr. Bernstein in London. A view that has the appearance of a set.

Through her bedroom window, Mrs. Elizabeth Lowry sees the refined Mrs. Doreen Stanhope (Wendy Morgan) walking past the house . . . "I approve. Middle class." These appear to be real buildings with additions to the front.

To his mother's calls of "Laurie, is that you?", Lowry arrives home to 117 Station Road in Pendlebury, Lancashire. Judging by publicity shots, this is either a set or the bays are frontages built onto a real building which may include CGI for the upper windows.

Remembering his childhood, in the year 1894 Lowry watches his Father (Michael Keogh) attempt to collect rent before a bucket of water is poured onto him. Crowther Street in Stockport.

"I see light and atmosphere. In the bleakest of places. A railway arch, a stone viaduct. I see beauty in everything." These steps lead up from Chestergate to Wellington Road South alongside the River Mersey in Stockport.

"A man just has to open his eyes and look. Observe everything. Life!" Looking up to the top of the steps as they reach Wellington Road South.

Daniel Lowery found that the shot is currently impossible to recreate due to impending redevelopment.

Lowry collects one bob short from Vera (Joanne Pearce) as Stanley (David Schaal) her coal miner husband takes a bath in the alley behind their house.

A hooter sounds as Lowry watches workers "Coming From the Mill". The mill looks real enough, with boarding on the left to cover something that would possibly look out of place.

Admiring one of her son's paintings, Elizabeth Lowry (Rose Noble) recalls walking along a beach with her seven year old Laurie (Laurence Mills). To the left stands St. Annes Pier in Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire.

Mother and son share memories of dancing at the seaside. The landward end of St. Annes Pier appears in 'A Kind of Loving'.

"Childhood games. Childhood friends. Something I've never known. Playing."

"For years, I've walked across this moor. Alone. I don't need anyone. You can see everything from up here. Like a bird, I observe it. Majesty of everything."

When his mother tells him that she's never liked any of his paintings, in a fit of frustration Lowry destroys his work, throwing it into a heap in the back yard.

Before Elizabeth's death in 1939, mother and son remember an earlier time as he hangs ''Sailing Boats" on her bedroom wall. Later that year, L. S. Lowry received his first major exhibition in London. Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire
