Murder Ahoy

Miss Jane Marple (Margaret Rutherford) makes her way through Milchester. In reality this is Village Road, Denham in Buckinghamshire.

The amateur sleuth enters an outfitters. Village Road in Denham has featured in many productions including ‘The Square Peg’, 'Vice Versa', 'Oh, Daddy', 'Jumping for Joy', ‘Great Day’ and ‘Made in Heaven’.

The shop front has been preserved thankfully. SJ

Kitted out in her Naval uniform, Miss Marple heads to a meeting of the Cape of Good Hope Trust. Looking south-eastward on High Street in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Jane Marple enters Milchester House. Piers Place on Amersham High Street. Looking the other way, this building played the police station in ‘Murder at the Gallop’.

Following the sudden death of a trustee, Miss Marple returns to Milchester House to search for clues. At first sight this appears to be looking along Cherry Lane onto High Street in Amersham. However, it is highly likely to be in the studio as there is no evidence of this style or placement of windows in the wall of Piers Place or the stairway ever existing.

Chief Inspector Craddock and his Sergeant encounter Miss Marple as she leaves the building with a sample of the victim’s snuff. Although the background looks correct, there are slight inconsistencies that suggest that this is a set with a mock-up of the High Street as the background.

The two look across the estuary at HMS Battledore, an old battleship used by the Cape of Good Hope Trust to help with the rehabilitation of young criminals. Looking across the Percuil River.

Lionel and Cynthia Sear took advantage of the weather and captured this shot of St Mawes to the left and the St Mawes harbour wall to the right. They explain that HMS Battledore was moored in line with the Place Ferry low tide landing stage on the opposite bank. (RL)

Jane tells her associate to book a hotel room overlooking the estuary. The Ship & Castle Hotel at the corner of The Quay and Grove Hill provides the backdrop.

Still an hotel but Lionel and Cynthia frequented the Rising Sun that day! (RL)

With no boat at their disposal Lionel and Cynthia risked 'life and limb' once again for ReelStreets. The water was very cold and the steps rather uneven but they took this for us from the the bottom of the ferry steps where the Falmouth Ferry lands. (RL)

With the Place Ferry not running in the winter Lionel and Cynthia unselfishly made the long drive round for us in order to take this shot from the Place Ferry low tide landing stage. This is in line with where HMS Battledore was moored. (RL)

After receiving a morse code signal from Miss Marple, Jim Stringer follows the patrol. Grove Hill with The Victory public house in the centre. Brian Nielsen advises that the steps in the distance are known as Victory Steps.

Having been called to investigate a murder aboard HMS Battledore, Chief Inspector Craddock and Sergeant Bacon leave the police station. Looking towards The Square from Hillhead in St. Mawes with The Rising Sun Hotel on the right.

As so often happens to us all, Lionel and Cynthia had to take the shot directly facing the sun. Now their visit to the Rising Sun makes sense! (RL)

As Jane Marple tells Mr. Stringer of her suspicions, the police car draws nearer to their hotel. Looking towards Marine Parade from Lower Castle Road in St. Mawes.

The screen capture is, apparently, taken from the terrace of the Tresanton Hotel but Lionel and Cynthia had to use the steps next door to the hotel as it was closed for winter maintenance. (RL)
