Along a darkened alley in Manchester, Johnny Fletcher (David Thewlis) rapes a Girl (Lynda Rooke). Grove Passage facing north east towards Corbridge Crescent, Bethnal Green, E2. Found on the 'London on Location' site by Neil Webster (NW).

By day, quite colourful. NW

Fletcher flees when his Victim pushes him away shouting that Bernard will get vengeance on him. Stephenson Street / Goodhall Street in NW10 (NW).

List-less lamppost. NW

Fearing the promised retribution, Fletcher grabs a few belongings from home and steals a car. Looking down Stoke Place from Goodhall Street NW10 (NW).

He'd be altogether more conspicuous driving Canary Yellow. NW

Driving through the night, Fletcher heads south. Approaching Junction 10 of the M1 for A1081 near Luton in Bedfordshire located by PW. The junction itself can be seen as it appeared 36 years earlier in 'The Silent Weapon'.

Soon after dawn breaks the Mancunian philosopher arrives in the Capital. Looking east along Harrow Road with the Westway to the left, the Marylebone Flyover in the background and the corner of Hermitage Street on the right.

The Post Office, now BT, Tower still peeps over on the horizon. SJ

Turning off the dual carriageway, Johnny Fletcher dumps the Mark V Cortina and continues on foot. Hermitage Street in Paddington, an area that has since been redeveloped.

A dumped car wouldn't last long here now. SJ

Reaching north-east London. Johnny looks for the address of his former girlfriend Louise. St. Mark's Rise at the junction with Sandringham Road in E8.

Aargh, straight into the evening sun so I shielded with my phone case at the top right. SJ

Sophie (Katrin Cartlidge) returns home to the flat she shares with Sandra and Louise to find Johnny waiting on the doorstep. Facing 33 St. Mark's Rise from the corner with Downs Park Road.

Securing refuge in Sandra's flat, Johnny and Sophie go out after spending the night together. Outside McDonald's on Kingsland High Street in Dalston E8 where, to the top right, is the street sign for Abbot Street.

The whole parade including the corner with the sign was demolished between 2008 and 2009 and McDonalds enjoyed a facelift at the same time. SJ

Becoming frustrated with Sandra and Sophie, Johnny heads into the centre of London alone. St. Mark's Rise in Dalston.

A Roadsweeper pushes his cart along the pavement causing Johnny to move aside. Brewer Street W1.

Dropping his bag in a doorway, Johnny looks at Archie (Ewen Bremner) as he calls out "Maggie". Outside Lina Stores at the corner of Brewer Street and Green's Court in Soho.

After engaging with Archie, Johnny walks with him as the search for Maggie goes on.

When Archie wanders off, Johnny approaches a Woman (Jo Abercrombie) and asks if she's Maggie. Facing Lina Stores at 18 Brewer Street W1.

Looking for Archie, Johnny and Maggie walk beneath a railway viaduct together. The undercroft of the derelict Bishopsgate goods station on Shoreditch High Street in E1 located by Steve Randall.

This may be the best one can manage. The site of Bishopsgate Goods Station. SJ

Johnny asks Maggie if she believes in Hell or the Devil. PW identifies the bridge from Cheshire Street to Fleet Street Hill and Pedley Street in E2 that crosses the railway running out of Liverpool Street. The bridge also makes an appearance in 'Face', 'Children of Men' and 'Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels'.

The pair pass a Bag Lady (Sandra Voe) on the steps leading back down to street level. The steps linking the footbridge from Cheshire Street with Fleet Street Hill in Shoreditch located by PW.

Archie and Maggie are eventually reunited . . . and begin arguing before Johnny takes himself off.

Johnny takes shelter in the doorway of an office block. Ariel House at 74a Charlotte Street W1.

On the east side. Some window redesign here and the parking meter has long gone. SJ

Having started a conversation with Johnny, Brian (Peter Wight) the night watchman lets him into the building. Looking out from Ariel House on Charlotte Street.

Standing at the entrance looking at no. 91 in the centre. SJ

Inside the empty office block, the Security Guard closes the blinds on the outside world. Through the window stands number 87 Charlotte Street.

A Porsche speeds along empty streets. The junction of Houndsditch and Bishopsgate EC2.

The corner was demolished in 2008. Still no entry though. SJ

Jeremy G. Smart, the yuppie landlord of Sandra's flat, corners whilst speaking on on his mobile phone. Bishopsgate with St. Botolph Bishopsgate to the right.

The next morning, Johnny waits for Brian. Steve Randall identifies the view as facing south in Stoney Street in Southwark SE1.

Redevelopment on the left and refurbishment on the right, but the bridge seals the deal. SJ

Brian leaves Johnny in a café after paying for breakfast. The since closed Jubilee Café at 14a Winchester Walk in SE1. The premises on Jubilee Place are currently occupied by a bar and the Borough Market Kitchen.

A far busier scene now with the forecourt much developed. SJ

Following a chat with the Girl serving in the café, Johnny continues his solitary walk.

Johnny reaches a more affluent part of town. Outside number 26 Ilchester Place W14.

Some greenery has been added. SJ

Ilchester Place also appears in 'Climb Up the Wall', 'The Crowded Day', 'The Door in the Wall', 'The Big Sleep' and 'Albert Carter Q.O.S.O.'.

The hedge leading to the corner has all but obscured the row. SJ

Seeing a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit parked at the corner, Johnny approaches the Chauffeur (Robert Putt) who initially mistakes him for his passenger. Ilchester Place in Holland Park.

Having gone back to the café, Johnny speaks with the Girl (Gina McKee) before following her home when she finishes her shift. Looking west on Winchester Walk SE1 found by SJ.

Somewhat spruced up, but let down by clutter. The pillar on the right edge remains recognisable even though an awning covers the tip here. SJ

Opening the door to the flat on her return from work, Louise Clancy (Lesley Sharp) discovers that Smart has raped Sophie. The front door to 33 St. Mark's Rise in Dalston.

After the Girl throws him out of her flat, Johnny stands in a doorway smoking as a Man (Darren Tunstall) pastes up posters.

Joining the Bill Poster and trying to help him as he carries on his work, Johnny follows him to his van. Twyford Street at the corner with Caledonian Road in N1.

Returning from holiday, Sandra (Claire Skinner) gets out of a taxi outside her flat. St. Mark's Rise seen over the wall from Downs Park Road.
