Night Ferry (Children’s Film Foundation)

The film opens with a scene of goods vans being hump shunted at a railway yard. Temple Mills Marshalling Yard in Stratford E10 with the Control Tower to the left of centre.

In a nearby field, young Jeff (Graham Fletcher-Cook) is playing with his glider. The playing field north of Temple Mills Marshalling Yard, now known as Leyton Jubilee Park.

When the model aircraft flies over the fence and lands in the railway yard, Jeff finds his way through the fence to rescue it. Temple Mills Marshalling Yard.

A wagon rumbles towards the lad as he picks up the plane. In the background stands the Hump Cabin at Temple Mills.

Shunters Harry Smith and his colleague spot Jeff and give chase. Temple Mills Marshalling Yard lies in the Lea Valley, between the River Lea and Orient Way to the north of Stratford.

Running from the railway yard, Jeff makes his way towards the street. Waste ground alongside Shellwood Road in SW11 with the South West Main Line from Waterloo passing above.

I'm guessing about here where there's still an open space. SJ

Dressed as undertakers, Pyramid (Bernard Cribbins) and Soapy (Aubrey Morris) look along the street from the back of their hearse. Shellwood Road in SW11 with buildings on Knowsley Road in the background.

Probably the same plane tree and extensions added to some of the houses on Knowsley Road. SJ

Jeff watches as an armoured car approaches. Looking towards the junction with Poyntz Road and Latchmere Road beyond from Shellwood Road.

When the security van comes to a stand, a valuable sarcophagus is transferred to the hearse. Facing east on Shellwood Road.

Now. SJ

Pyramid and Soapy get back into the hearse and drive away with the stolen artifact. Shellwood Road in Battersea.

A rebuild to the right. SJ

The hearse turns a corner leaving Jeff puzzled as to what he has seen. The junction of Shellwood Road with Knowsley Road.

The original Shellwood Street sign is still there on the right. SJ

Later that day, Jeff approaches a corner shop whilst out walking. Sabine Road in London SW11.

No longer a shop, with a rather inconvenient little wall added. SJ

The headline on a newspaper board catches his eye as he passes the shop. The corner of Sabine Road and Eversleigh Road.

At least the wall presents the opportunity to append a road sign. SJ

The youngster turns to read that Nematut's mummy has been stolen. Eversleigh Road from the corner of Sabine Road.

Matching brickwork in the pillar. SJ

Jeff heads towards the police station but thinks better of entering because of his earlier trespass at the railway yard. The former Battersea Police Station on Battersea Bridge Road SW11. The building has been converted to residential use.

And it looks like the sale is still on. The building is called, er, The Metropolitan. SJ

At a small tea stall, Nick (Engin Eshref) and his father Reg (Ricardo Montez) serve a drink to one of the Shunters who earlier chased Jeff from the railway yard. Culvert Road in SW11, which also features in 'A Fish Called Wanda', 'Bring Me the Head of Mavis Davis', 'This Is My Street' and 'Villain'.

With a train passing as well. Arch No.1 is heavily fortified. SJ

Jeff approaches the tea stand and attracts Nick's attention. Culvert Road. Just through that tunnel is where scenes for 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' and 'Man with a Gun' were shot.

Now. SJ

Nick listens to his friend's description of what he has witnessed before Pyramid and Soapy are recognised as they unload boxes into a nearby railway arch. Culvert Road at the junction with Culvert Place in Battersea.

Now. SJ

Jeff goes to visit his friend Carol Smith, whose father is one of the shunters at the railway yard. Looking north on Dorothy Road SW11.

This is further west on the other side of Latchmere Road from the earlier stills in the SW11 area. SJ

The camera moves with Jeff as he walks along the street. Dorothy Road, Battersea.

A different paint pattern on the nearer wall. SJ

Carol lets him into the house where Jeff apologises to her Father before her Uncle Bert, a Policeman, arrives. Opposite Lavender Gardens Playground on Dorothy Road.

Same next door gate. SJ

The villain's van approaches the lock-up under the railway arch where Nematut's mummy and sarcophagus are being concealed. Culvert Place SW11 with a train on the line running between London Victoria and Clapham Junction to the top.

A Harley Davidson approaches rather than a train. SJ

Jeff tells his friend Carol Smith (Jayne Tottman) about the mummy. Sabine Road with the Fox & Hounds public house on Latchmere Road in the background.

The Fox & Hounds still going. SJ

The two call to Nick as he walks home with his Father on the opposite side of the road. Continuity is excellent and this is Sabine Road with Eversleigh Road to the right.

Unchanged. SJ

The friends decide to break into the railway arch and prove to the police that Pyramid and his gang have the stolen mummy. Sabine Road in Battersea SW11.

Pity about the van. SJ

The next day Pyramid sets off from the railway arch and Carol follows. Culvert Road with properties on Eversleigh Road in the background.

Extended corrugated iron. SJ

Carol keeps her distance as she tails the thief. The Eversleigh Road side of the tracks at the other end of the footbridge with West London Junction Signal Box in the top background.

Now. SJ

Carol waits before crossing the road and taking up the pursuit. Eversleigh Road.

And looking in the other direction. SJ

Pyramid crosses a main road. Looking along Lavender Hill from the junction with Falcon Road and St John's Road in SW11.

John Harwood returned to the junction that now features added trees.

Carol hides in a telephone box as Pyramid descends into a gents lavatory. Lavender Hill at the corner of Falcon Road.

Meanwhile, back near the lock-up, Soapy sets off too. The footbridge crosses the S.E.& C.R. and West London Extension railway lines and leads to Eversleigh Road from Culvert Road.

Missed this one and it only took three years to return to make amends. Same walls, bollard impressions in the walkway but the corrugated iron looks fresher! SJ

As Carol watches, a Priest leaves the lavatories. The now removed gentleman's lavatory at the corner of Falcon Road and Lavender Hill.

Carol spots the bag and recognises the Priest as Pyramid. Looking over at the corner of Lavender Hill and St John's Road, Battersea SW11.

While the boys look after the tea stall and keep an eye on the railway arch, Carol continues to follow the disguised crook. Facing Clapham High Street from Gauden Road in Clapham SW4.

Staying hidden, Carol peers from the top of the station's stairs. Through the stairway windows can be seen premises on Voltaire Road.

The train to Victoria approaches and Pyramid boards as Carol climbs into a different compartment. Facing north-west at Clapham station. In the distance stand the tower blocks of the Westbury Estate in SW8.

The train from Clapham arrives at Victoria. Terminus Place outside Victoria station in London SW1. The location features in 'Ring of Bright Water', 'Pleasure Girls', 'Somewhere on Leave', 'Two on the Tiles' and 'Background'.

Long standing works are finally coming to an end. SJ

Alighting from the train, Pyramid makes his way to where the Night Ferry service from Paris will arrive. Platform 2 at Victoria station.

Re-decoration for example the roof supports are now painted black, but much the same. SJ

Soapy arrives at Victoria station. This is Platform 3 at the London terminus.

Pyramid waits to meet Mademoiselle Duval, a buyer for the sarcophagus. Victoria station's platform 2.

The offices and passageway to Hudson's Place have been re-jigged. SJ

As Soapy keeps watch, Pyramid takes Mademoiselle Duval into the booking office to buy tickets for Paris on that evening's departure. The Sealink booking office at Victoria station.

Having changed his disguise again, Pyramid explains the plan to smuggle the mummy and sarcophagus out of the country.

Nick and Carol head to the station while, trapped in the lock-up, Jeff climbs into one of the boxes.

Carol arrives back at the station with Nick as Soapy arrives at the railway arch to secure the boxes. The stairs leading to the Up platform at Clapham station in London SW4.

The pair board the next departure as Soapy loads the boxes into the van. Clapham station is on the South London Line that runs between Victoria and London Bridge but since December 2012 has been part of the London Overground network.

Back at the lock-up, an ambulance turns up. Culvert Road at the junction with Culvert Place in SW11.

More barriers higher and lower. SJ

Fred (Colin Jeavons), another gang member, arrives at Victoria with the boxes from the railway arch. The eastern concourse of Victoria station with the carriage road at the bottom of the image.

The carriage road has gone and the WH Smith moved to the centre of the station. SJ

On the concourse, Carol asks a Policeman if her Uncle is on duty. Victoria station in SW1.

Changes of premises. SJ

The ambulance arrives and is driven into the station. The eastern side of Victoria station on Terminus Place.

Now more openly pedestrianised. SJ

Accompanied by Soapy, the boxes from the lock-up are brought to the Paris train. The Night Ferry ran between London Victoria and Paris Gare du Nord and was withdrawn at the end of October 1980.

This should have been taken much further back beyond the ticket barriers, but I wasn't on the move to the south-east at the time. SJ

Inside the station the ambulance is brought to a stand and, looking like a young boy patient, the mummy is unloaded by stretcher. The eastern side of Victoria station.

The pedestrians have taken over. SJ

A Police Officer checks the details of a passenger boarding the train. The barrier to platforms 1 and 2 at Victoria station. The 'Night Ferry' sign is now on display at the National Railway Museum in York.

Barriers sure have changed. SJ

Soapy looks from the train and sees Carol at the ticket barrier. The location was also seen in 'Return of a Stranger', 'The IPCRESS File', 'Night Train to Paris', 'The Ware Case' and 'Red and Blue'.

The scene now. SJ

Now posing as a Doctor, Pyramid accompanies his bandaged patient to the train as Carol and Nick look on.

Nick runs around the outside of the station, searching for a way onto the Night Ferry's platform. Hudson's Place alongside Victoria station with Wilton Road in the background.

The canopy has gone as it wasn't listed. SJ

Carol finds her Uncle Bert (Jeremy Bulloch) and asks him to follow her as Jeff is in trouble. The entrance to the Underground on the eastern concourse at Victoria.

The stretcher is taken away after the mummy is placed in one of the berths. Looking along platform 2.

Apparently health 'n' safety required a canopy rethink. SJ

Carol leads her Uncle towards the train where Jeff is trapped inside one of the boxes. The inside of Victoria station was seen in 'Village of Daughters', 'The Embezzler' and 'Man From Tangier'.

Nick climbs a wall and manages to board the train without being seen. Platform 2 at Victoria. The wall formed part of the security for international passengers and has since been removed.

Darren and I were not too sure about the wall but we thought it about here, close to platform 1. SJ

The whistle is blown, signalling the departure of the Night Ferry. Platform 2 at Victoria station.

Alerted by Carol's Uncle, Police Officers await the arrival of the Night Ferry at the Channel Port. Dover Marine station in Dover, Kent.

The train from London arrives. The Night Ferry was introduced on the night of 5th October 1936 and used specially built Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits carriages for the entire time that it ran.

Carol arrives on a following train. Platform 6 at Dover Marine station.

Pyramid is chased from the train by Jeff, Carol and Nick, followed by the police. Dover Marine was renamed Dover Western Docks in 1979.

On the quayside, Pyramid is caught when he runs up a gangway as it's hoisted away from the waiting ship. A Sealink ferry waits at Dover Marine's quayside.
