A Lorry Driver calls for gas after pulling up outside the Dogana, a roadhouse in Italy's Po Valley.

Giuseppe Bragana (Juan de Landa) comes out of the building to greet his customers and notices a tramp asleep on the back of the truck. The story is based on The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain.

The tramp, Gino Costa (Massimo Girotti), wanders towards the trattoria where he discovers the owners wife at work in the kitchen. This appears to be along the banks of the River Po near Boretto, in the province of Reggio Emilia.
