Investigations into a murder are centred on the village of Hillfield, nestling in a valley on the South Downs. Fittleworth in Sussex viewed from the A283 with Church Lane on the right. (SD)

Detectives from Scotland Yard gather in a nearby quarry. This is Pepper’s chalk quarry on New Barn Road at Houghton Bridge in Sussex identified by James Holmes.

The chalk quarry opened as a museum in 1979. The building on the left of the capture is the De Witt Lime Kiln which still exists but is now obscured by trees. I decided this would be a better match seen from a higher elevation, so this view, replacing my original shot, is taken from the top of a 1914 Tilling Stevens TS-3 petrol-electric omnibus. (SD)

Accompanied by a Detective Sergeant (Edward Cast), the Pathologist (Lloyd Lamble) and Explosives Expert Sam (Donald Moffat), Inspector Duggan (Russell Napier) looks on as a reconstruction takes place to determine how a man accustomed to using high explosives accidentally blew himself up. Pepper’s chalk quarry, the site of which is now the Amberley Museum.

This area at the far end of the museum isn't open to the public. It can only be accessed by taking a ride on the industrial narrow gauge railway which runs past this end of the quarry. (SD)

Establishing that Foreman Josef Cusick was killed by an explosion, the group leaves the quarry. Looking south-west from Pepper’s chalk quarry with buildings at the entrance on New Barn Road in the distance.

This seemingly out of sequence footage sees the Men from London emerge from a tunnel. The site was abandoned in the late 1960s and this tunnel stands at the eastern end of the quarry and was also used in ‘A View to a Kill’.

Leaving the home of Mrs. Cusick, the Inspector and his Sergeant walk along across the Downs towards the quarry. Appletree Cottage, The Hollow, Bury in Sussex. (SD)

Quarry Under-Foreman Jim Fenton (Mark Bellamy) is taken to the local police station after footprints matching his new shoes are found in mud on the path to the workings and a hypodermic syringe is dredged from a nearby pond.

Inspector Duggan arrives at a discreet building close to Whitehall after being called to the headquarters of MI5 to meet with Captain Simpson. Geoff Dodd finds the 'discreet building' to be in Eaton Place, looking towards Upper Belgrave Street, London SW1 and judging by the position of the grid on the pavement, perhaps somewhere around number 29. It looks like the camera was sited on the corner of Belgrave Place. (RL)

After Inspector Duggan is told that Cusick is a spy who escaped to the West some years earlier in a stolen Army plane, Scotland Yard makes contact with the US Embassy to learn more about Viner, the man who fled Poland with him. The United States Embassy in Grosvenor Square SW1.

No1-3, Grosvenor Square, between 1938-1960 the US embassy, then part of the Canadian High Commission called MacDonald House and now 48 private flats. Amazingly it was demolished in the mid 2010s with the façade rebuilt brick for brick. SJ

Staff at the Embassy get in touch with the FBI in Washington who radio back an image of Albert Viner along with his fingerprints. Close, but no cigar. This is the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, DC.

The Inspector and his Sergeant leave the Monarch Hotel after speaking with the Manager who had reported one of his visitors missing, an American man named Viner. Geoff Dodd finds them leaving No 46 Leinster Gardens that was at the time the Leinster House Hotel 45-46 Leinster Gardens. (RL)

Inspector Duggan heads back to Hillfield asking the Sergeant to put out a general alert for Viner. Consequently, remaining in Leinster Gardens, Geoff tells us that we now see the side of Reading House to the left of the sergeant’s hat with Winchester House visible at the end of the road. To the right of capture, can be seen No 15, now 'Maite Court', the whiter of the properties and without a balustrade above the portico. (RL)

The Sergeant is told by a Taxi Driver (Alfred Maron) that he took Viner to a car rental agency. Dave W proposed that I was the 'deus ex machina' for resolving this one, but I might need to look that up, so in the meantime I must record his identification of Brunswick Place, London NW1. As he says, the "Perfect location for a pretending taxi rank." (RL)

And so Dave takes a walk in the sunshine to capture the view now, all the way down Harley Street to John Lewis department store at the end, in the background. (RL)

Having telephoned Mrs. Cusick previously, Viner drives to Hillfield to meet with Josef. The junction of the A245 Byfleet road with the A3 at Pains Hill between Ockham Common and Cobham in Surrey.

Peter Bywaters explains that today there is a roundabout at the junction where traffic comes from Cobham on the Portsmouth Road to join the A3 or go straight across to join the Byfleet Road.

Spotting the car as it passes, an AA Patrolman makes a phone call. AA Box 150 was originally located at Pains Hill but a roundabout at the intersection of the Cobham Bypass and the diverted A245 has obliterated this junction. However, the AA Box survives in private ownership.

In a patrol car, a Policeman (Carl Conway) and his Colleague spot the Consul on the B2133. This is Horsley Road, Cobham, facing Downside Common Road. (SD)

Taking this view, Peter Bywaters notes that the school building appears not to have changed over the years.

The most wanted car in Britain continues towards Hillfield. Horsley Road, Cobham, looking north towards Downside Road. On the right of the Consul are the K1 telephone box and police box that were also seen in 'The Counterfeit Plan'. (SD)

With alerts put out to garages, hotels and road patrols, the lone patrol follow the Consul. Horsley Road, looking south. The house is called 'Oakfield'. (SD)

Peter Bywaters revisited the location to discover that Oakfield has been extended.

A side road is taken which almost throws the following Policemen off the trail. Pointers Road, Cobham, facing south. The side road led to Chatley Farm. (SD)

Peter Bywaters found that drivers today have plenty of warning signs to read.

From the scene, the Sergeant calls in to tell Inspector Duggan that the fingerprints in the car aren’t Viner’s. AA Box 432 was originally located at Whiteways Lodge at the junction of the A284 Arundel to Bury road, the road from Amberley and Fairmile Bottom on the edge of the Houghton Forest in Sussex.

As the Porter (Robin Wentworth) at Amberley station is questioned, Inspector Napier spots Mrs. Cusick crossing the footbridge. James Holmes confirms that this is Amberley station on New Barn Road, Amberley in Sussex.

At the police station, the Inspector explains to Mrs. Cusick that he believes Albert Viner (Bill Nagy) called at the house to meet her husband.
