If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.

We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

Bernard Hedges (John Alderton) leaves the house and makes his way to school.

  • 'Now' required

The time is checked as the young teacher heads for the bus stop.

Hedges catches up with fellow schoolteacher Mr. Price (Richard Davies) at the corner of the street. Robin Medford recognised Wornington Road at the corner of Telford Road W10 with the former Isaac Newton Upper School in the background, now Wornington College, along with the adventure playground to the right. From Telford Road, the same junction can be seen in 'The 14'.

Quite a few changes to the right with Telford Road no longer connecting up to Wornington Road and stopping at Protobello further east. The college, still there hidden largely by trees is now called Morley College London - North Kensington Centre for skills which is rather a mouthful. SJ

The cynical Welshman walks with his more optimistic counterpart. Identified by Robin Medford as facing eastward on Wornington Road.

Further back looking south-east down Wornington Road. SJ

The two get off the bus on their way to Fenn Street school. A 'waterless' gas holder peers above the buildings in the right half of the image. Robin Medford locates this as Portobello Road at the junction with Telford Road with 375 Portobello Road in the background.

Looking north-west. The bus must have travelled about 100 yards between this and the previous scene. SJ

Hedges expresses his faith in his pupils as the older teacher is distracted by a window display. Portobello Road with the corner of Telford Road in the centre background found by Robin Medford. The buildings to the right were cleared and the site is now occupied by Athlone Gardens.

Panning right and a little further back from the "bus stop." SJ

At the school, caretaker Norman Potter (Deryck Guyler) cleans graffiti from the name board. Incidentally, Deryck was a collector of model soldiers and used to be a customer in John Tunstill's shop.

Schoolboys run past Mr. Smith (Eric Chitty) as the elderly geography teacher approaches the school. Oldfield Road NW10 outside Leopold School with the corner of Outgate Road to the left. Location identified by Nigel.

An unsightly extension to the school makes itself evident. (PW)

A hand drawn 'L plate' is seen on Smithy's back as he turns into the school gate.

The same gates survive but only one of the gateposts. (PW)

On a nearby estate, Sharon Eversleigh (Carol Hawkins) leaves for school. Charles Hobson House at the corner of Leopold Road and Curzon Crescent in Willesden NW10.

The block has been renovated as this ground level view shows. (PW)

Fellow class 5C pupil Eric Duffy (Peter Cleall) runs across a lower level of the block after calling up to Sharon. Charles Hobson House, which has since been refurbished.

Another shot from ground level showing more of the alterations made to the building. (PW)

Maureen Bullock (Liz Gebhardt) makes her way to Fenn Street. Hillside in NW10. Most of the buildings in this location have been demolished.

Not much left of this once thriving corner. (PW)

As a Priest passes her, Maureen adjusts her skirt. Hillside at the junction with Wesley Road in Stonebridge Park.

From a similar position. (PW)

Maureen says hello to Dennis Dunstable (Peter Denyer). Facing north-west on Hillside in London NW10 with Wembley Point towering in the right distance.

The distant high rise still stands. (PW)

Peter Craven (Malcolm McFee) waits to cross the road as Mrs. Abbott (Barbara Mitchell) fusses over her son Frankie (David Barry). The corner of Chalcot Road and Fitzroy Road in NW1.

The same corner. (PW)

Duffy comes along, grabs the lollipop from the crossing supervisor and runs into the road. The crossroads formed by Chalcot Road and Fitzroy Road.

Facing south-east at the junction. (PW)

When a van driver attempts to move off, Duffy holds up the lollipop. Chalcot Road in Primrose Hill. Filming took place here for 'Rattle of a Simple Man' and for 'Allez France!' in nearby Chalcot Square.

A different white van in this comparison shot. (PW)

The schoolmates pile across the road. Facing Fitzroy Road from Chalcot Road in NW1. Identified in the book 'London Movie Guide' by Simon James.

Fitzroy Road over forty years on. (PW)

Frankie Abbott shoots the motorists with his 'air' machine gun. The Princess of Wales public house stands on the left at the junction of Chalcot Road and Fitzroy Road.

The same location, without the dramatics. (PW)

Tilting up, the titles are displayed above the buildings. The high rise blocks in the distance stand along Adelaide Road NW3.

  • 'Now' required

The camera moves across the north London skyline. The rooftops are of properties on Fitzroy Road.

The pan settles to allow the titles to finish. Beyond Gloucester Avenue, in the lower centre of the capture, stands Camden Roundhouse, the engine shed that is also seen in 'The London Nobody Knows' and possibly also in 'It Happened Here'.

Just over the rooftops in the distance and through the trees on the left can be seen the roof of the Roundhouse. (PW)

In the playground of the inner city school, Hedges talks with Price as the children board coaches to take them to Woodbridge Rural Centre for two weeks. Tim D tells us that this is the playground of Primrose Hill Primary school in London NW1.

Not exactly concrete evidence but here's a shot from Gloucester Avenue of the back of the school which overlooks Regent's Canal. SJ

Potter attempts to give instructions to a Coach Driver (Jack Smethurst). Primrose Hill Primary school on Princess Road NW1 as recognised by Tim D who was a pupil at the school at the time.

And this is from the front on Princess Road. SJ

  • 'Now' required

Primrose Hill School again, recognised by Tim D who recalls being allowed to watch this scene being filmed and Oliver Fosker adds that the coaches used also appear in in Carry on Abroad.

  • 'Now' required

Doris Ewell (Joan Sanderson) calls over to Bernard Hedges as he attempts to chat up a young woman motorist.

An establishing shot of Woodbridge Rural Centre. IMDb mentions Black Park Country Park in Buckinghamshire as a location but Oliver Fosker and Kevin Snelgrove suggest it was the orchard on the back lot of Pinewood Studios where 'Carry On Camping', 'Carry On Behind' and 'Carry On England' were shot. However, the discrepancy in locations is solved by Michael Lost . . . .

. . . who provides this comparison shot of the rectangular grass clearing at the southern end of Queen's Drive in Black Park. Michael draws our attention to the pair of silver birch trees in the left background of both images.

Miss Ewell greets the headmaster, Mr. Cromwell (Noel Howlett), as he arrives at the centre. Michael Lost identifies this as the clearing off Queen's Drive in Black Park. Graham Hopkins recalls that on 18th June 1970 school was closed due to a General Election and, as a 12 year old, he cycled to Black Park with two Friends where they came across 'Please Sir' being filmed. After a while filming stopped and the three Pals went on the set and walked around the huts where they met meet most of the cast. Graham found a empty cigarette pack, ripped it open and managed to get autographs from Peter Cleall, David Barry and John Alderton, which he still has.

The location as it appears now, taken by Michael.
